You know, I've actually been pondering the same thing, CK. My guess is that they stopped using it in advertising when they officially decided to not go the online route with the game, for the time being. I'm still thinking the online gameplay was supposed to be the big step/reveal for TS4.
Edit: They even removed the mention of options for online activities from the Q&A. I remember them having something about that there before in the answer about it being a single player offline experience.
It was for when the sims 4 was the online multiplayer game. The blue representeded sims controlled by someone else apparently. I guess theres no need for then anymore.
Just another piece of the conspiracy that I'd the sims 4.
Yeah CK, what the folks before me said; I too think it was the mmo they had planned before simcity fell flat.
I guess they did get rid of all the online part. I haven't been following too closely what's been going on at E3, but there really wasn't anything at all about optional online stuff, was there? Not that I saw.
Interesting, at least from my perspective as a single player, off line kind of Simmer.

They both disappeared.
Hey, thanks for these! I can't believe they started it in 2008!! 6 years they've been working at this game.
As for the blue plumbob, I think sims had a blue plumbob above their head of they were in a like outing group or something.
Found a picture. It doesn't belong to me:
