Sims won't bowl

I have tried several times to get my Sims to bowl while at University. I get the menu option bowl/bowl with... But nothing happens. Is there something I'm doing wrong? Do I need to purchase a ball or something? I tried looking the answer up, but I couldn't find it anywhere.
