    anyone know how to hang christmas lights

      That is correct, click the FRONT door of your sim's home and hanging the lights is one of the options. It is automatic, you dont' get to place them yourself. They hang down from all roofs on your house so if your home has no roof (Like if it is a flat roofed house where you put floor tiles on the top) you can't hang lights.

      Click a door leading outside. It should come up with an option to choose the lights and their colours.

      Your house must have a regular roof, not a flat one. If it's winter, you can click on your front door and the option to hang lights will come up. It will also ask you which type you'd like to hang.
