No, but if your graphics card drivers got updated then all Game Options would revert to default. This always happens on such updates. Check on the graphics settings there, especially look to see if Advanced Rendering (it's a checkbox) got switched off.
The last real update to the game was years ago. AFAIK it didn't affect terrain.
In the graphics settings for the game, do you have 'Enable Advanced Rendering' checked? That has a huge effect on terrain. Your "Texture Detail" setting may have an effect as wells.

You were lucky that the slippers were at least still a bit fuzzy. The last time that happened to me, I got smooth green squares where the grass used to be and my sims looked like...well, let's just say I thought I had accidentally picked up someone else's eyeglasses for a moment.
