Help: Game Freezing-Having to use Task Manager to shut game down

Hi guys,

My game is having an issue where it will not run for more than a Sim Week, after the week it will freeze around 1-3am Sim Time and no matter how long I leave it (I waited two hours once, I went out with my boyfriend for lunch and then came home) and I still had to shut it down by using task manager. I do have CC, store content and mods but even without these my game has the same issue. My game is Version 1.67 and all my mods are up to date (I check monthly).

This issue happens regardless of what world I am playing in but I've noticed happens more frequently in Sunset Valley, so I avoid it. Please help, this is no way for me to play a game!

I have the following mods:
NRaas:
Master Controller + Cheats + Expanded Tattoo
Career
Decensor
Error Trap
Overwatch
Relativity
Story Progression
Traveller

cmar:
Pregnancy Controller V5
XCAS Tattoo Locations

Any ideas guys?

Have you tried deleting Cache? I had horrible lag and crashing, then did that and everything was working again :)

Many times, right now I'm just clearing out CC/Store Content I don't use then I'll try deleting Cache again :)

Sorry, but please clarify your opening sentence--I've not had enough coffee yet this morning and am being dense. Are you saying that you cannot play more than a sim week within the same game session (and how long are these sessions in real hours), or does the problem persist that sim night/morning if you save (as), quit, and reload, thus making any further progress with each affected world impossible?

Either way, a few things worthy of checking:
1- Is ErrorTrap kicking out any interesting script error logs, other than routine Correction and Dereferencing logs? If so, you might consider zipping or rarring up some samples, uploading them to NRaas, and starting a troubleshooting thread so we can help interpret them.
http://nraas.wikispaces.com/How+To+Upload (free registration required to upload and post)

2- Is it possible that there are any inactive sims around town giving birth at precisely this time, either in their homes or at the hospital?

3- I notice that Register is not in your mod collection. It's not possible to tell without some script logs, but one very common occurrence that can bring a game's flow to it's knees is the game engine flubbing up the handling of Service/Role sims. Register fixes that and give you more flexibility with those.

4- When you can make it to 3am, does Overwatch report an unusual number of abandoned vehicles every night (as in the hundreds or thousands)?

Oooh sorry, for not being clearer! No, I don't play one week in the same session, I don't have that much free time... Unfortunately ;) Generally my sessions are 4 hours with like a ten minute break every hour. I haven't tried using save as, quit and reload, mostly I just save and quit. The reason I don't like to reload is because it can take a while to load, and as with my generation I require instant gratification :D

    1. Hmm... I've had a script error log from the 4th of april I can upload when I'm done with my CC clearout

    2. When I've had this issue in the past someone pointed this out so when I reloaded my game after the initial crash I ran a total annihilation on all pregnant sims, didn't help.

    3. I will install Register ASAP

    4. I think I got a notification saying 300-something vehicles

Thanks for clarifying. Some players (who never sleep, I suppose) try to run the game for 24+ real time hours at a go and are disappointed when the game engine kind of falls apart after such constant use. The SaveAs, Quit, and Reload was meant if you are trying to play through your current game session and go further. But four hours of play isn't really that long, comparatively speaking.

1- One log from April 4? I don't mean crash logs, I mean script errors. They should look something like this in your game folder:
"ScriptError_(name of your PC)_date/time_(some goofy looking hex codes).xml"

I get around eight or nine of them per each game session, more if it's a really long one. Again, many are routine, not really errors, and nothing to worry about, but some of them might shed light on whatever the problem is here.

4- That's a lot of vehicles to cleanup, but not as many as I've seen others have. Presumably you don't even have 300 (resident) sims old enough to drive in each of these worlds. The bug I'm thinking of here is the celebrity limo one, where the game gets stuck in a loop generating the limos that no one really needs. Overwatch does clean them up, but if something bad is happening a couple of hours before its 3am run, it might not get to tend to them in time.

The NRaas Traffic mod has a setting that disallows the spawning of Showtime performance career limos (assuming you have Showtime).
This mod will take care of LateNight celebrity limos and those given to sim in high level base game careers:
    http://www.simlogical.com/ContentUploadsRemote/uploads/1581

I have both in place, they do not conflict or bother my active sims' actual vehicles, and I see an average cleanup of around 3 vehicles nightly (not 300).

We might be way off track with the ideas I've suggested, but something is wrong or off-kilter if the freeze is affecting most of your worlds at around the same day/time into play and these few are just very common. If none of this helps, I'm going to have to ask about your computer's specs -- processor, RAM, video card.

Edit: Sorry, one more question. Windows or Mac? :)

    1. I know what you meant about script errors :)

    4. I'll install Traffic now

    And I'm playing on a Windows 7 Laptop :)

If none of the suggestions I've given so far make any impact, when you are done with those and your CC cleanup, we need to talk about your laptop's specs as I mentioned -- processor, RAM, hard drive space, video card in particular. If you know all those you can just recite them or you could run a dxdiag report (from Start Menu > Search Box > Type "dxdiag", Save All Information, and copy and paste it here into a post. It will be really long and you might have to split it up into two or three posts, but those give a lot of information about your system that might be helpful if it's not strictly a gameplay issue causing this on its own.

Okay, thanks. And sorry, we should have started with the computer specs and saved the mod and cleanup suggestions until later. Given how long you have been playing (just by glancing at number of posts, etc.), this isn't what I expected to see at all. Is this the computer that you have always used for TS3?

Frankly, I would say that you are fortunate to have been able to run the game at all, but especially with all EPs. That laptop's processor is far too weak (dual 1.0 GHz) and you have an integrated graphics card that is not meant for gaming. This sounds almost like a netbook setup, that is, a lightweight device meant to surf the web, play videos, and perform light office type tasks. Basically what's happening is that a week or so into a game, the processor is giving up and conking out on you, hence the freeze-ups. There is no way to fix that and if you continue to play, you risk overheating and permanently damaging the device.

You might be able to get away with removing all of the EPs and playing the base game only, but I wouldn't recommend even that.

Having said all that, I'm going to call on the Tech Responders here to take look so you can have a second opinion. They are much more hardware savvy than I am and maybe they will see something that I am missing.

Yup, I've had this laptop since 2012 I believe and Sims 3 never used to crash originally, even with all the EPs and SPs.

🐸🐸🐸🐸 I never realised that my laptop wasnt capable! I mean jeez, I had a legacy that ran for seven generations, that I chose to end, not my laptop 0.o

Performance issues can build up over time -- much like many of us, computers tend to get cranky as they age rather than always perform at the same level. But as you've had success with it in the recent past, let's sit tight and see what the hardware experts say.

I noticed you have two video cards your cards have not been updated since 2012. go to your laptop manufacture for computer updates for your model.

Make sure your game is running on AMD not intel and you use the TS3 W file for the sims 3.

Maybe some of this will help you

They do have dual graphics cards but yes the processor is low unless they have turbo on their processor which they could. it wont show up in a dxdiag Chester and others are better than I at knowing laptop brands and which might have turbo

PS Display devices section on a dxdiag will show a second video card if there is one

Yup game is running on AMD and when I have to use task manager my game is listed as TS3W.exe so does that mean I'm using the correct file?

Ok thats good that your AMD is on the game. TS3W file is the file the game uses to run off of so that should show in task manager. You video card has not been updated so I suggest you update your video card and any drivers that need updating. You can go on the dell web and search your computer model for updates. Updating your video card could make a diffrence

hey @Homeworker first you dont have a second card :) you just have the integrated chip that comes with processor

i agree with @igazor im impressed you have been able to play this long on this system and the thing to try now if you want to try to make this still work is go by your maker and see if there are newer graphic drivers available and the other thing is to start uninstalling stuff to see if that stabilizes the game

see this for more help with both http://modthesims.info/wiki.php?title=Game_Help:Onboard_Graphics

the other thing i noticed is your driver info in general is not showing up under system devices. now this can happen when you run the 32 bit dxdiag report and not the 64 bit. i would suggest running it again and thne selecting the 64 bit option and see if you still get the N/A read outs.

this states this is a dedicated card but not a good one

    Radeon HD 6290 compatibility review
Overall, the AMD Radeon HD 6290 has poor performance. This should be expected only from older dedicated graphics cards, so this graphics card should definitely be avoided if building a system to power modern applications and games. The graphics card is over 3 years old, meaning it is based on aging technologies. The driver support from the manufacturer is okay, and the AMD Radeon HD 6290 shouldn't have many game-breaking graphical issues, but due to its age it has a dwindling number of optimizations for newer games.

At this performance level you would be better off getting a CPU with an integrated GPU, because a dedicated graphics card like the AMD Radeon HD 6290 would not be worth the extra investment,

no you are confusing similarly named dedicated with integrated for amd as ive stated before you first look at the processor info, AMD C-60 APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics (2 CPUs), ~1.0GHz

the "with' tells you its bundled with an integrated chip. this is a precursor to the APU we have today.

    taken from notebook check.

if helpful i spent considerable amount of time researching and understanding more informed takes on specs before i started assessing performance of others computers.
