I got the idea from
this Sims Supply series to do my own spin on a Rags to Riches scenario. The heroine of my story is Magnolia Willow, a young adult. Her traits: Cheerful, Loves the Outdoors, Genius. Her starting aspiration: Curator (granting the bonus trait of Collector). Her goal: To own and operate a successful retail store by the time she reaches full adulthood.
My self-imposed rules:
0. No cheats, other than the one in the next rule. No mods or custom content.
1. Bought an empty lot, then used testingcheats to set starting money to zero.
2. No careers (rabbithole or active).
3. No painting. (Seems too easy to make fast money that way, unlike in real life.)
4. Vegan, so no eating burgers or hot dogs left by other Sims unless they're veggie/tofu, and no fishing.
5. No sleeping over at other Sims' houses, cooking in their kitchens, or using their showers. (Existing benches and showers in public lots like the gym are fair game. No altering public lots to add beds etc.!)

Magnolia Willow was a smart, resourceful, and relentlessly cheerful young woman. These qualities would serve her well, as she found herself stranded in a desert town with nothing but a cell phone and the clothes on her back. She'd laid claim to a small plot of land, but she was far too independent to get a traditional job to pay the bills. She would just have to use her wits and charm to survive and, ultimately, thrive.
She quickly found that there were many plants in the desert. She could harvest these and start her own garden, selling the produce for some small income and hoarding the edibles for snacks.
Even more profitable were the numerous dig sites she found, unearthing all manner of gems, fossils, strange colorful figurines...
... and decorated eggs. Lots and lots of eggs. They popped up everywhere she looked; in a flower bed, inside a hollow log. They weren't highly valuable, but they would certainly supplement her meager income for the time being.
After spending the morning and early afternoon exhaustively combing her neighborhood for collectibles, she headed to the park to meet the locals for a friendly game of chess. By evening she felt her stomach growling; she hadn't eaten all day. Fortunately, a kind older woman had just grilled up a platter of veggie burgers, and was more than happy to share them.
Magnolia was fed, happy, and for now, all was well with the world.
Night had fallen, but she wanted to hunt down every last item that she could possibly sell before sleep overtook her. She remembered a story about a relative in Sunset Valley finding a pink diamond in a trash can. Ever hopeful, she rummaged...
...and found nothing but another cheap egg. She was now dirty and exhausted, but still, she had made quite a haul for her first day.
She traded a portion of her goods for a cheap tent, wanting more privacy than a park bench would afford. Magnolia slept peacefully, dreaming of what desert wonders the next day would bring.
