New to Sims 3. Any tips and suggestions would be nice.

I've just started getting a lot of the expansion packs and the base game of Sims 3 and its still pretty confusing about the gameplay as far as finding the right career and progression for my sims. I'm still an avid player of Sims 2 and was fortunate enough to buy the entire DDL content for it and have all the stuff/expansion packs there before it was taken out of the store.

Sims 3 character creator takes me a lot longer to try and recreate my favorite families I've made in the Sims 2 since its much harder to make them look at least as attractive as Sims 2 chars and somewhat more realistic without bouncing around in the advanced options. I love the body weight/bust/ and muscle tone adjusters. Still can't seem to get my Asian sims to look Asian enough for some reason :(( Its all about the eyes but can't seem to get them right.

I've also tried to install some mods and many of the mods I do want don't function at all even though I've tried making the Mods and DDCache folders for .Package files and making sure it matches my update version... Still no luck. Seems like Sims 3 DDL version is completely patched blocked off from those which is a shame. Plus even though I own all the expansion packs up to Island Paradise (and only a few of the stuff packs) it doesn't show as registered nor will it allow me to register my expansions here even though they show up just fine in Origin My games section. I've looked at the mod the sims guides but it still misses a lot of information (like making and placing the DDcache folder.)

Since the neighborhoods also are restricted (I can't have all my personally made sims as townies from the city or country side interact) I'm trying to make it so many of the townies in Sims3 are Sims I've created and if I can get everything into one town instead of having to start stories in different towns like the dragons vally, genies, fairies etc so they don't look out of place for the location. I'm going to use the CAW tool to recreate my Japanese Town/city in Sims 3 to start and see what I can do there.

Plus my first test run through the game with just two of my sims in different houses ended up with my female sim getting a dog without my permission since I didn't have any control over when I was playing my main home which is me in Sims 3 form. Is there an option for me to stop the other houses from progressing/making choices while I focus on one or the other household?

Well that's the gist of it. I'm looking forward to balancing my game play and hopefully making it easier for myself to raise my sims quickly into some stable positions that I can work on and pace myself from there.

My advice? Don't try to make TS3 into TS2. They are different games, after all.
Just play around, explore, like you did when you started your first sims save.

I'm not trying to make Sims 3 into Sims 2, I'm just trying to recreate my characters in the Sims 3 world. The careers are getting kind of confusing and I'm still trying to adapt about trying to go about those.

It's difficult to just give advice as the game, especially with all the EPs, can get a bit complex.

To keep families from doing things you don't want, you would need to turn off free will for that family. When playing that family, go to options, change the free will setting, then save.

Which career(s) are you confused about? Most careers are fairly easy to advance in. Check your employment tab to see what skills/objectives need to be advanced/met to level up. When your sim is at work, you can hover over the job icon in the upper left hand corner of the screen for the drop down menu, then select the activity you want your sim to do while working. The job icon on your screen will either have a green arrow pointing up or a red arrow pointing down. You're wanting the green one. :) If it's the red arrow, see what's bothering your sim, or change their work activity to take it easy (or sleep in break room, or.... depending on career) and their mood will go up. Unless they're a workaholic, then tell them to work hard. If there is no arrow, select a work activity that will help you level up - the green arrow should appear shortly after that.

I would rather turn off Story Progression than free will, but that's just my humble opinion.

It's hard to give any tips for playing the sims 3 because all simmers play differently. Some simmers are here only to build, others like making stories. You just have to explore all the new options and find what you're most interested in game. Explore all the new careers and wishes. You'll get the hang of it. Once you get past making all your old characters, just dive into the game and explore!

Use the save as button.... a lot :)

    I create weekly saves.

When you hover over the time ingame, you'll see the number of simsweek progress.

I usually try to make a new save every simsunday
    (city family name 0001.1)
this would be the first sunday.

If something important happens, i make a new save for that day.
Getting married on tuesday in week 12 would be:
    City family 0012.3 marriage

Every month or so I cut out the old saves and put them on my d;drive.
This way I keep the documents-folder smaller, saving space on c:

I am now reinstalling store content and have dicided to keep the clean sims3 folder in mydocuments backupped on d-drive as well.
I hope this will save me from reinstalling the whole store again ;)

    Happy Simming!

Hello, and welcome to the world of TS3. First you mentioned how you are having problems getting your Mods folder to work, well watch this video, he explains it very clearly. I have been playing this game ever since it came out, and it was only a short time ago did I start using them. I just could not get the hang of it or even understood how it all worked. He even has the links of places you need to go.

In this second video he explains a little more on some things you need to do after you get them added.
