patch and crash problems

Here is my sad story.
I've been playing happily since June. NO problems at all until the last 2 patches. It may have just been the last patch that caused the "ghost town" effect, in which sims just disappeared from the neighborhood. This was really frustrating, and the game became no fun.
I have never before downloaded a mod, but so many people said that the IndieMod would help that I tried it. This has resulted in the game crash that I see lots of others are dealing with. So, i uninstalled and deleted the mods and associated stuff, and tried again. Nothing-still crashes. So I took a deep breath, felt a little sad, and uninstalled my game, then re-installed it. Imagine my dismay when it crashed again! Aaargh!
At this point I don't know what to do.

Update your ATI driver from thier site.
Make sure you have .net Frameworks 3.5 SP1.
If that doesn't solve the problem, do a clean install - here's how:
Copy My Documents/Electronic Arts/Sims 3/Saves to a safe location.
Uninstall the game via add/remove programs or the provided unistaller.
Delete all Sims 3 folders it leaves behind. (Look in Prgram files and My Documents)
Run regedit and delete all sims 3 keys.
Reboot.
Install the game and patch it.
Load the game to Sunset Valley.
Quit.
Redownload all CC, store items etc and install those.
Load Sunset Valley again.
Quit.
Now put the saves folder you rescued back where it came from and - hopefully- enjoy your game.

I find myself wondering whether the game is properly optimised for quad core? I never had this problem when I had a dual core CPU.
If you have installed the patch and your game is crashing, I'd suggest a backup of your files and a manual uninstall and reinstall, just to remove the possibility of corrupted files.

You can also try restoring the /Library folder by copying it from the Sims 3 DVD and replacing the one present in the Sims 3 folder at My Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3.
When reinstalling, do not immediately restore your backups. Install the game, patch, then restore your backup files. We are continuing to look into this issue for everyone, and your patience is appreciated.
