So I moved my sim in with a family and then went to household management and moved that family out. Now my sim has all their household funds. I don't want all that money because it takes away the game play for me. Is there a way to get rid of it?

Where 1000 is put in whatever amount you want and it will set your funds to that exact amount. You might not need "testingcheats on" but I always have it on so I can't remember, haha,
I like playing poor sims. I do three things. The money cheat above, and give at least one member of the household the Good trait. With the money cheat, you can give yourself however much money you want or need. Often, I drop household funds to 0 once they move into their house. When they get work bonuses or begin to accumulate too much money, I have the good sims donate it.
The third and final thing I do is a mod that drops all careers to about $8-$12 an hour at entry level. Raises are much less, only raising you by about $4 an hour. It's meant to be more realistic and makes money management a lot more difficult.
Oh and on the flip side, there's also a mod that will raise the household bills. I believe that the game is set to 1.5% of your gross worth -which is comprised of all build/buy items including items in your personal inventory and household inventory. There are several flavors of the mod that raise the percentage to up to like 5% - 20% depending on how much of a challenge you want. So if you are okay with using mods, you can either lower career wages or raise your expenses. Or if you are a glutton for punishment... use BOTH.
Nice ...and the sim would get a happy moodlet as well.

Not necessarily. It's now possible to get a bad moodlet from donating to a fake charity. It's happened to me!
Oh gosh yes...OK give to buskers

LOL. Motherlode makes my sims bored. They need challenge and struggles. They need to fear the repoman - I mean... no utilities and cold showers! (That doesn't seem nearly as scary as the repoman... we need to get him back!)
The cheat "money X" is an helpful cheat.
And if you don't want to cheat and have "romantic garden" you can still make a wish for money, the wishing well might end up taking everything you have ^^
