First I have to say my jaw about hit the floor when I saw that you made this challenge! Because when I decided to take a break from my bullet journaling YT channel to concentrate more on my neglected Sims I started setting up "The Ultimate TS4 Challenge" in a bullet journal - a checklist of EVERYTHING that can be done in game! It's not finished, but when it is I intended to either do a walkthru video of it and/or blog post sharing it. And I had contemplated typing it up as well. So great minds think alike!! Mine was intended to just keep track of things as I play other challenges. Simply because I tend to follow challenge rules so closely and repeat the sames money making tactics over and over, that I barely scratch the surface on all the game features. If I haven't been told to do it by the first 6 Drifter Houses or The 1st Switch - then I haven't done it. Sad really when you think about it. hehe.
When I started compiling my lists I went overboard and listed every handiness upgrade, recipe, drink, etc. for all packs (thru Seasons) etc. which made me realize it could be used to possibly bring back the Nothing Is Free Challenge for TS4 or for extras on other challenges - exactly like you did for The Master Simmer by adding extras to go along with their careers . So if for some reason you need to know a list of something for clarification chances are I've done the research and have it written down.
Anyway I'm not sure where I was going with this anymore other than to say - too freaky! lol
@AllieMac That's hilarious that you were writing it all out at the same time I was. I published the challenge mostly because since I'd put so much research into it, I figured someone else might be interested in using the lists, too. Initially, I started writing it because the "do everything" challenges I could find stopped being updated several expansions ago, and I'm pretty silly about buying new expansions pretty much right away. I SHOULD wait for sales, but my patience isn't that great.
I, also, was really into the Nothing is Free challenge back in Sims 3.. I tried at one point to come up with a way to bring it back for Sims 4, but it didn't work out very well in practice. Even build a city challenges don't work too well, because there's very little ways for sims to "own" or "buy" lots.
Oh, if when you go through the goal sets list and see something that's wrong or missing, please let me know! Since I haven't played through the whole thing, some of the goal sets may not be 100%, and I've already found a couple the that wording was messed up thanks to some other people who are playing the challenge and found some small glitches, but everything should be pretty accurate.
I agree I didn't really see how it could be adapted to buy or own the lots either, BUT I thought it might be possible to adapt it so you had to unlock the lots, services, careers, etc in the same spirit as the NIF. While compiling the data as I got deeper into it, it seems like it just might work. But I think it would be a HUGE undertaking trying to figure it out properly. Or in the least an interesting challenge. Maybe there's a way between the two of us that we could finally bring it back. (Thinking of how HUGE of a project that would be literally makes me cringe, but I bet it would be worth it.) I always played NIF as a random legacy.
I always (until now) buy everything the day it's released too. Like I said I hate being behind. I've been trying to force myself to at least experience all the seasons first before adding the celebrity system, salvadora and the islands. But it's getting harder and harder to wait. hehe
I'll let you know if I see anything missing etc. I am excited to tackle this one. Only thing holding me back was all this time I've been sticking to my 2 original challenges determined to finally experience the community lots, having neighbors, new career options etc within the confines of drifter & switch. just something about the thought of the first town I see that's fully populated being one that I built up myself, but considering I'm 4 years in now and still only have 5 houses & 1 apartment, maybe it's time to broaden my horizons. lol What do you think?
@AllieMac Nothing wrong with broadening horizons! Especially when it comes to experiencing new things in the game. I, too, tend to get in a "rut" and do the same things over and over again, so that's why I decided to make Master Simmer. To push me out of my comfort zone. There is so much more than I've experienced in the game, after five years it was time to branch out a bit.
It would definitely be interesting to try to recreate a NiF challenge. Especially now that they've got a good mix of careers to pick from. Back when I tried to recreate it, there just weren't enough careers to make it work. And not being able to buy lots and the lack of "rabbitholes" bothered me - but, as you said, with some work, it might be possible.
I haven't looked at my Challenge book since I started writing again. I'll try to find some time this week to go through it to see if it looks to be possible. I haven't finished compiling all the data I originally intended to yet either. I was on the Holiday section and without having the pack it was ruining the excitement of experiencing it by looking up all the data. So I put it on hold to allow myself time to play and be amazed first. I haven't done the pets or lot traits, etc. There's still a lot to sift through. I do remember spending forever looking at club info though lol. Ooh clubs could be another way to unlock something.
@AllieMac Clubs is something I haven't really played with much. I keep meaning to, though... and Master Simmer will eventually get me into at least some of it (as well as my townie rotation). It's sad how much of the game I still haven't experienced.. which is why I built this challenge in the first place. Now I just have to get back to playing it! (Will be either today or tomorrow - depends on how much I get done on the rest of my to-do list.. lol)
@IllusoryThrall I haven't done anything with the clubs yet either. I haven't even used it to group up with the nonplayable family members to get them to skill. Just felt a little bit like cheating. And I'm right there with you on not experiencing much of the game at all. I haven't even had a closet yet! lol
I might start my master challenge tonight. Not sure. I haven't been able to come up with a (last) name yet, So we'll see. I"m really hoping to at least play something tonight. Having too many ideas tends to shut me down at times. I can't decide which one to pursue, so I just fight indecision all night long only to realize it's too late to start playing, then fall into the same rut the next day. I think I'm on day 3 now of wanting to play but not being able to decide which family to play. *facepalm* Maybe I should just flip a coin! Or go soak in the tub with a book and decide later. (No wonder I struggle with time management!)
@AllieMac I relate. I've been known to stare at the loading screen for a couple hours at a time while browsing forums, just trying to decide which sims to play. I finally made a play schedule so I know what to play based on what day it is. It's sort of a round robin, I just play them in order. Saves me having to decide what to do and who to play. I'm terrible at decision-making.
@IllusoryThrall I'm glad I'm not the only one shut down by indecision at times. I love your idea of a 'play schedule' I just might have to do that myself. I do that with our movie collection (which is HUGE I think 300+). Used to be whenever I was in the mood to watch something I'd just stare at them forever trying to pick one. After staring at them forever, I'd just give up and do something else. Since I always have a movie playing in the background when doing needlepoint - not only was I not watching any movies, but my daughter's stocking STILL isn't completed. So I watch them alphabetically. It's taken about 6 years but I'm on the letter L (and no- the stockings still not done. *sigh* The movies were too good to not watch, so I'd hold the needle and be distracted by the TV. lol)
I finally got my game up to date with all the expansions etc. And started to play, but everytime I do I find myself wanting to do a NIF challenge. So I've started making notes and roughing out a TS4 version! Tons of stuff to figure out but I think it just might work!
@AllieMac I was amazed at how much the schedule worked for me. Now the only deciding I have to do is when I'm done with whatever is on the schedule that day, and I have to pick something else to do.
I sympathize with the needlework taking forever. Lately I haven't had time, but I do cross-stitch and knitting (and some crochet).. and I always get distracted. My brain just doesn't sit "still" for long. Always have to have something new to do.
You'll have to keep me posted on the NiF idea. I'm still intrigued to see if we can get it to work on Sims 4
I've been working on the challenge today and I think it's actually going to work depending on how the Retail stores function. Have you played with those at all?
@AllieMac Unfortunately, no, I haven't. However, I rolled the retail store goal set for next generation.. so I will be playing with them whether I like it or not very soon. LOL.
@IllusoryThrall Lol. Well that's convenient for me! I'm going to test one today hopefully. We can compare notes later. I've roughed out a lot of the challenge and will probably send you some snippets of it to get your opinion this morning. I'm still not feeling 100% so if I can gather my thoughts, I'll zap it in a private message. If not just know it will be coming soon.
I emptied a map completely and started testing last night. I may have gone a little overboard on the starting restrictions. hehe So I have to find out if it's possible to do or not and how many of the game features I've broken (clubs, fame, etc.)
That was one of the pics Maren took for her goal sets. She managed to get a couple of really nice ones. It's not often I just take pics of scenery, but that one was particularly nice.
Added "Aging up a sim early is okay so long as that sim has all it's goals complete. i.e. children/teens have an "A" in school, toddlers are at max skills.. you get the idea." into the rules. I never specifically said whether you had to wait or not, so I wanted to clarify.
