I was just wondering the same thing. My Sim had Ambitious as one of her traits. I had her buy a clothing shop and she's running it. She goes there almost every day. She spends most of her time there. She has no way to have another job/career. Yet she still wanted a job/career. (I had to change her traits because of this). I think that EA should have recognized running a retail shop as a career. Or at least gave us the ability to make that decision. As I recall, in TS3 they could go to the City Hall and register as self employed to be painters or gardeners. We should have some option like that as well.
Yeah. We should be able to use that function on the register or something ... let us choose "register for self employment" as an option, so players that just want to run their own business can have that recognized as their career.

Your sims will be listed as the shop owner if that helps.
How will the sims be listed as a shop owner? On the job tab it says unemployed.
