Well, I'm done. The latest "event" that would have allowed me to unlock the dancer heirloom upgrade was only possible if I spent money on the game. It was promptly uninstalled. Two llamaZooms with no more reliable source of cupcakes? I'm out.

A surprising choice is a shakedown and totally agree that it needs to either be reworked or go. It's the only thing about the game that I entirely despise.
It's a space issue. Can't make a bigger house without the expensive land bits. Of course, I have to say, it really doesn't take that long to get 30k simoleons if you have 4 sims running. Only money I've spent on the game is getting those extra two sim slots. It's been worth it for my enjoyment of the game.

I'm going to sneak in post new patch today and offer this massive recommendation: Allow us to skip "special events" entirely. I do not want to use/waste resources (like sim cash or cupcakes) on choices, nor do I want to choose the worst option that has no cost that I'd never want my sim to do. If you're not going to make…
Have had the same issue on my Mac. I'll try the lessons checkbox tip since my wife has been able to build on empty lots. Thanks. Could this also be linked to running the game with story progression mode disabled? Wife has her's disabled and is able to build on empty lots.
