Unlike TS2 or TS3, TS4 has been built on such a small scale, with limited gameplay, I will be happy the day it has ended and TS5 possibly revealed. Or maybe I won't if this trend keeps up into the future of half baked, limited, buggy games.
Everyone has an opinion about the new EP. Think on that a minute. Here is my opinion. Expansion. Does that mean a handful of animations or should that mean content that expands the entire game and base? I think most Simmers believe it should expand the entire game. What does the new EP do? Not much.
This is the fourth iteration of this series. The fourth, let that sink in. Twenty years of experience. Twenty years of hearing from their core fans and interacting with them. No, this is not the first team that ever chatted with players. But this is the first team that has thrown out every excuse in the book.
Points I want to make strongly.
JetSki, yay, but how is it better than the last one? It's not, it goes around in circles. We have seen it before, so shouldn't it be better? Yes, it should it's the fouth iteration. If anyone can say going around in a circle is better, here is a bridge.
Boat..seen it before, how is it better? It's not. How many can participate compared to past boats? Seriously, is it better? No.
Is the world in the pack better than any other world of this type in any other game, seriously? No, because of limited space for lots. You can't say a nice world (might be pretty) is better than a world that is pretty and allows over a hundred lots. That's just not logical. So, no, it's not better than anything that has ever come before.
Mermaids, are they better than the last ones? Are you kidding? No.
Scuba diving..wait, there isn't any. Most people don't scuba dive on the edge of water but deep dive if they pay to dive at a tourist trap. How is this better than the last time? A rabbit hole..please, talk to the hand.
Tanning, but not all skin types can tan or burn? Is that better than last time? No.
Cleaning up the beach, sure that's new, but is it any better to do that than say not to do it? What stands out that makes this gameplay so important than what you have already seen in past games? not much, because guess what the other games have flowers grow etc. when it is spring etc. trees change, grass changes, more flowers bloom etc. So, nothing new here to see, other than a strong message on environment health by Maxis.
Exploring, how many Sims can do this together? I hear crickets.
Finding stuff, aka collecting, does the Sim care? Are you sure? Moodlet gameplay, wow, isn't that exciting? Or do they even get one? Were they aware of what they found? Does it matter to them or is it important?...no. It will go right out of their head next day.
Clothes choices, o.k. do you really believe those who live on an island wear outfits that are sold in tourists trap stores? Number one rule of when you visit, blend in, don't wear flowery tourists clothes.
Segregation, can't hire Sims who don't live on the island? Bug? who messed up that? Preach inclusiveness but Quality Control misses can't hire Sims from other worlds?
Why should anyone spend $40 on this? Glory days of this series are way over.
ETA: Not finished with my opinions.
Oh, it expanded the game alright, enough to break DO. Priceless.
Swimming in ocean, is it any better than twenty years ago? No, it's limited to one world. One type of water terrain. Wow, shouldn't we all be excited?
( I hear the excuses right now).
Making a new drink....snooze fest. $40 to watch that, really? Does it do anything? No one has said it does. Or is that too, just a moodlet?
New career....wow, one whole new career, how is that better than four or five in previous EPs? It must be so amazing it took up all the budget right? Surely it did to have only one new career in an Expansion pack.
Part time work..rabbit hole life guard, wow, I can't wait to see that.
Lounge chair as part of the patch for this EP. Why bother.
Underwater scenery, 1st person view, oh, wait, non existant.
Animators I'm sure you do an excellent job but those over you must really frustrate you when they limit you to a circle and or tell you just reuse the same animations from the base game. I feel your pain. Or maybe some don't care and just slap on the last used animation.
Romance one would expect on a tropical island which doesn't include woohoo..where is it in this pack? Moonlight strolls? no. Sitting together arms around each other on the shore? no. Hand holding walking along the beach? no A romantic boat ride? No Moonlit swims together? no
But the same excuses it's too hard and too expensive for an Expansion. And that wasn't the focus..ok, but exactly what was the focus? because this pack didn't expand anything and did it worse than anything we had already in older games. Pitiful.
"Games Are Not The Place To Tell Stories, Games Are Meant To Let People Tell Their Own Stories"...Will Wright.
I've heard so many people say it was worth the $40 just because of the world, I wasn't going to dish out that kind of money for the worlds that sims 3 had the sims 3 store, which also had some build/buy/CAS items and like 70 lots. I'm not going to dish out $40 for some nice bb, CAS, and 14 Lots. That to me just isn't worth it.
Yeah I'm ready for them to wrap up sims 4, at this point it kind of feels like we're being taken in circles or watching the same script with a different backdrop.
I've been playing sims 3 for the past week and I started up sims 4 yesterday, couldn't get into it. I played for like 10 minutes maybe? Got bored and did something else. The only thing I miss is the calendar, to edit/make my own holidays that came with seasons when I am playing the other iterations of the game. I dont miss multitasking - in fact after playing 3 I realized how annoying multitasking is. My sims actually do what I tell them. Actions cancel when I tell them to cancel.
I'm ready for something innovative. Something ambitious.
Sorry I rambled there just very passionate about sims in general.
Edit: You know what I'm also wondering? If sims 4 is doing so well sales wise where is all the money going? It's clearly not going back into game, sinces Devs complain all the time they couldn't do this or that because of the budget.
Is the world in the pack better than any other world of this type in any other game, seriously? No, because of limited space for lots. You can't say a nice world (might be pretty) is better than a world that is pretty and allows over a hundred lots. That's just not logical. So, no, it's not better than anything that has ever come before.
People keep going on and on about how pretty the new world is and everyone is posting tonnes of screenshots, but a pretty sunset isn't exactly gameplay is it? People get so hung up on visuals.
The amount of players giving the developers a free pass for laziness this time around is astonishing. Someone over on another thread here pointed out that Jungle Adventure came with more content and that was a Game Pack. It's blatant that they're selling Island Living at Expansion Pack price when it's no such thing.
The series feels so hollow in this iteration, like there's nothing at its core. The emotions system is completely backwards, traits are almost entirely pointless in a lot of cases (again, the emotional traits in particular are practically worthless when changing emotions is so easy) and the spark that 2 and 3 had is gone. I could play the earlier iterations with a sense that something unexpected might happen, positive or negative, that would change up what I was doing, but every time I start up 4 I know exactly what to expect.
At this point I don't understand why people still defend it, considering we're years in now.
These devs have proven to me that their timelines to produce a good product is not working. Having sims on multiple platforms is just going to cut into the quality even more soooo I don’t have high hopes for Sims 5.
I will definitely wait before buying and watch the forums for a year.
I'm not. I'm not ready to go back to a base game while missing pets or seasons and then having my desires drowned out by the "IT'S A LIFE SIMULATOR!!!! MY STUFF COMES FIRST!!!!!" crowd again.
I'm not going to disagree that IL looks weak. Haven't bought, and packs have reached the point where they're only worthwhile if bought on sale. Still:
I really want them to take their time on TS5. I'm reminded of a quote; "A delayed game is good eventually, a rushed game is bad forever". Most of the core weaknesses in TS4 came from having to change direction midstream and rush production, I don't want the same thing to happen to TS5.
TS5 will not be and should not be TS3+. Especially because TS3 is still available. Of course some old standbys like pets and weather should return, but I'd rather the team try breaking new ground.
I honestly can’t wait for the next generation of Sims either. But it’s more out of curiosity than excitement.
That’s because I admittedly don’t know if I have trust/faith in this development studio and company to re-create the magic and excitement that I felt when I tried The Sims 2 and The Sims 3 for the very first time. Their track record is extremely poor compared to other developers and companies which break barriers with each game franchise release. The Sims sees none of that.
The Sims 4’s base game was a disappointment and the expansions are only the nail in the coffin. The last expansion, Island Living, is testament to this. Fans are expected to pay $40 for an EXPANSION whose FIRST highlight feature is “Sit Back and Relax” on the Origin store page. I cannot fathom the idea of me spending 40 dollars for a glorified game pack to watch my Sims go around on a tiny boat on essentially a pond sized body of water that pretends to be an ocean.
It’s a shame because the CAS developers really did an awesome job this iteration, and I think the art designers did, too. Everywhere else, especially within the programming team of this game, was a huge failure.
If you cannot program the game to function as it should, and we have Sims standing around, canceling our actions for us, cannot design fun features, have time mechanics jumping back and forth, etc., then the purpose of the game is lost, and it’s nothing more than an embarrassing cash cow.
I'm ready for TS5 if it's good; i.e. with modern graphics and large worlds, not looking like a sparkly Disney Princess game for pre-teens in tiny neighborhoods like TS4. Also, as I've said many times before, EA needs to STOP with re-inventing the wheel every time they release a new iteration of The Sims. Bland base game and then the same old expansion packs dribbled out over years... so boring and predictable. The whole Sims series needs a giant reboot, a total re-imagining.
That was harsh. Also, I believe the title it "I can't wait for ts4 to end" but you only mentioned that in the first paragraph. I feel a better title would have been "Island Living is awful!"
Unlike TS2 or TS3, TS4 has been built on such a small scale, with limited gameplay, I will be happy the day it has ended and TS5 possibly revealed. Or maybe I won't if this trend keeps up into the future of half baked, limited, buggy games.

Oh you're so right...Pff they will never understand. If they really did listen us, since 2015 things should have improved but nope!
Well not sure if i agree or dissagree but i enjoy a lot whit playing sims 4 but also it haven't improved from sims 2 and 3. I mean we have always had to buy same things like seasons, pets etc for new sims serie but we have also get new features and possibilities but not in sims 4. Kinda i like how sims 4 is and all that but would i continue to buy every few years new sims serie when it's not improved and different from past serie? i don't think so. Even tho i love sims 4 now it took me over 2 years after release to buy it because it was missing important things. Gurus have also told that they change things and don't want to always do the same thing but in this case it always just mean that they take away features from past sims games and make it sims 4 expansion. I mean for me sims 3 packs were not that interesting but just because i didn't use those features it had to offer but for others they did.
But i'm not ready to sims 5 cuz i like sims 4 and i've being invested this game and whit sims 5 it mean again only base game and waiting same things but not just cuz that since i being doing that always since beginning of sims but cuz i don't think EA would improve sims that much from older sims games. The waiting sucks so it would be just easier to play something that have already those things and don't have to buy them all over again knowing there is not much anything improved or new.
Overall, I'm done with TS4, especially after the disappoint with this tropical EP. I had really hoped it would be awesome because for the first time ever, I actually considered buying it, a TS4 pack. I'm glad I waited though until the real info on it came out. I'm honestly so sad about it though!
I don't want them rushing TS5 and have it become poorly made like TS4, but for EA to stop with TS4, they would need some other way to make revenue. So they'll have to continue making poor quality stuff for TS4 and continue to bamboozle simmers into buying them until they finish TS5.
What else can replace TS4 in the meantime?
What they can do though is promote TS3. That game is still amazing. And nothing needs to be added as it's a full and complete game as well! Even all the bugs are well-documented with fixes or work-arounds so they wouldn't need to update it anymore.
They can also start selling TS2 Ultimate Collection again and it's other stand-alone games like The Sims Stories and Castaway Stories.
Also re-release The Sims Ultimate Collection as well.
EAXis needs to stop listening and pandering to the game changers too. They NEED to listen to US, the simmers, because we're the ones buying their games, paying their salaries and funding their projects. The new leadership at EA has totally lost sight on who actually keeps them in business!
So I don't quite understand what is wrong with Island Living?
Read all the posts on the forum that complain about it including right in this thread. You can't avoid it, lol!
I see nothing wrong with it and if I wanted Sims 4 to be a rehash of past games I wouldn't have bought it.
That is based on what you think about IL, other people have different ideas and opinions that differs from yours and that is okay.

What I liked about Sims 2 and Sims 3 is that we didn't have Game Changers. What is the point of showing off all the features and items when I can/want do that myself? It defeats the purpose of going in blindly and not knowing what to expect. It is what made TS2 and TS3 so exciting. I loved the walkthroughs that they used to do for TS2 and TS3 and that we were able to form our opinions based off what they shared. I like how they didn't share everything about the game because it allows players to explore themselves. What is the point of sharing everything? It makes the game feel so predictable and the excitement of pack dies down.
TS4 is supposed to be T for Teen, but it feels like P for pre-school. TS4 tries too hard to emulate real life that the heart and soul of the Sims is lost. Sims is a life simulator. It doesn't have to be real. The silliness and wackiness of the Sims is lost in TS4. It is too predictable. There is something wrong when previous iterations feel more complete when they had less packs to go off of.
TS1:
7 Expansion Packs
TS2:
8 Expansion Packs
10 Stuff Packs
TS3:
11 Expansion Packs
9 Stuff Packs
TS4:
7 Expansion Packs
7 Game Packs
14 Stuff Packs
28 packs later and TS4 still doesn't feel complete? With Sims 5, I hope they get rid of Stuff Packs all-together and stick with Expansion and Game Packs. Expansion and Game Packs already provide enough stuff. Also, peeved that this iteration has the least amount of occult Sims.
I have to admit I'm longing for Sims 4 to come to an end and hoping for an announcement of a better game in its place - one that puts back whatever is missing from Sims 3. There is so much missing! So many little details that immersed the player are no longer there. I'm not going to write what is missing - life is too short to create such a long list!
I'm hoping that a new game will be built on an engine which allows the same freedom that players of Sims 3 enjoyed - creating their own environments and worlds; adding and placing lots in different places; build and buy items that can be matched up, at least with a colour wheel if not CasT; cars; having a reason to drive to town or into the country; watching children sims walk into school, waiting for a sim outside their workplace; chatting with sims outside the bookstore. One thing I really, really miss is the opportunity to create visitors lots where the player could place varying items that npc's would all use. This allowed so much freedom for each and every player to create an environment suited to their own taste.
Something I really liked about Sims 3 was that the town felt like coming home. The npc's were regular, you knew them all and you knew their personalities. In Sims 4, the player doesn't know anyone. They are all different, random people. Sims 3 was like living in a small town where people know each other. Sims 4 is like living in a city where no-one knows anyone else and you're on your own. There is no familiarity at all.
I live in hope. I don't want to see another expansion in this game. I want to see a new game; I really, really do - even if it means going back to a base game because a base game that is built correctly, allowing players more freedom from the outset would be far more valuable. If a game is going to be good, it needs a solid foundation which will allow for expansion. Sims 4 feels like it was build on sand.
These are just my thoughts and my own feelings about the game and I apologise if they don't match certain other players' feelings about the game.
So I don't quite understand what is wrong with Island Living?

Ok but you need to realize this isn't Sims 2 or 3 and it doesn't need to measure up to either game.
It DOES have to measure up to Sims 2 and 3 because it's part of the series. They should have made TS4 it's own game. That way it wouldn't have to live up to the previous better iterations.
I'm not. I'm not ready to go back to a base game while missing pets or seasons and then having my desires drowned out by the "IT'S A LIFE SIMULATOR!!!! MY STUFF COMES FIRST!!!!!" crowd again.
This. But I do agree with the OP on TS4 -- so, I can also anticipate a better-made Sims game someday. I've posted my own thoughts on how the game is developed, released, and added to over its lifespan. Basically, I'm as frustrated as the OP. That's why on one hand, I'm not ready to start over UNLESS the next rendition is done right.
To me, that means a base game that starts as a cohesive experience (all life stages and educational opportunities, immediate and extended relationships, etc.), pets, seasons (yes, in the base game), a wealth of careers that mean something based on my sims' skills and education. I could go on here, but I think you get my point (whether anyone agrees or not).
I've heard that careers, such as education, haven't been included in TS4 because the devs wanted to add "new" and "different" careers. I don't get this logic. I mean, how difficult would it be to actually develop a game from the start with a baseline of what has turned out to be fairly "standard" and "expected" in any sims game (life stages, education and career options, pets, seasons...).
All that said, do I want TS5 to look like TS1? No. TS2? No. TS3? No. TS4? No.
I want TS5 to surpass them! To actually build on what's been before. Start the game right. And then, introduce "new" and "different." I really won't be jumping on TS5 unless the base game is a fully-developed game in it's own right. I mean, as others have pointed out, why am I paying full price for a game that only promises to feel fully developed after I've paid that same price over and over and over and over again?
So I don't quite understand what is wrong with Island Living?

I agree. It DOES and SHOULD match up with Sims 2 and 3 because it's supposed to be a follow on from those games. Sims 4 is definitely NOT a follow on. Sms 4 changed the criteria right from the outset and right from the outset, in terms of being a follow on, it was lacking. Everyone who has played Sims 2 and 3 already knows that. It's not a belief, it's a fact. EA know it, long time players know it.
Sims 4 is ok as a stand alone game. It's .... ok. But that's it. If I look at it from the perspective of being an extended, better version of Sims 2 or Sims 3, then no, it's not ok. It's lacking.

It DOES have to measure up to Sims 2 and 3 because it's part of the series. They should have made TS4 it's own game. That way it wouldn't have to live up to the previous better iterations.
