Sulani And Gardening, Can It Happen? UPDATE

Yesterday I built a nice smallish log cabin on the off-the-grid lot near the volcano. I also built a green house in the hope my Sims could do some gardening when they move in. Does anyone have any gardening tips for me, please?

Hummm.....it's pretty straightforward. There's no going wrong with gardening in TS4. I've never had a plant die on my sims tbh I don't even know if they can die lol.

It's not realistic like in TS2. In TS2 you really need to track your weather, because you can over water plants and they'll die.

PalmArrow has a story-thread which shows her sim successfully gardening on the beach!

Well, thank you for the response. Does this hold true for Sulani, though?

Thanks for that. What I saw was the ability to grow local plants directly in the ground! I'm wondering, and I guess I'll have to experiment, if regular seeds planted in the ground will work.

    Thanks for the responses!

You can grow literally anything in the sand, as far as I can tell.

And yes---plants can die. But I don't think they can be overwatered; the option to water is normally greyed out when the plant doesn't need it. They can die from neglect, though.

I have had plants die but only in Oasis Springs when I forgot to water them in summer and it was dry for days. It rains enough in Sulani that I doubt that plants would ever dry out like that there. I have my sims craft pots and planters for them because the rough wood looks better in the island setting than the more finished buyable pots. I also try to grow mainly tropical or warm weather plants in my sims’ gardens to keep the immersion going, like avocado, grapes, lemon, plantain, bird of paradise flowers (as well as the native plants).

This sounds very much like how gardening in the Sims4 began. I enjoyed it up until Seasons struck. Now, I have to have a green house whether there's room for one on the lot, or not! Thank you!

I will remove the wooden planter boxes before I dismantle the green house, then. But, I intend on growing normal vegetables, herbs and fruits, plus some of the exotic ones found on the island when I get my Sims over there. Right now, they're still teens, but they have promised themselves to each other. It's getting serious. :)

You can garden on sand. :) I have planted many coconut and pineapple trees.

I usually have greenhouses with sprinklers, can grow anything there. Haven't had any problems in Sulani. I plant directly on the ground, no matter the type. I find planter boxes/pots to take up too much room. Also don't think sprinklers will water those, but may be wrong :)

Thanks. Sprinklers on an off-the-grid lot might not work either.

I have everything planted in the boxes and just watch the seasons so the ones out of season can go in the greenhouse. All my trees are outside in the rough looking planter box for one plant and the others are in the four planter box. I am in the fall season in my game and so far the only one of my trees that has changed was the coconut. It went back to like when I first planted it the little mound of dirt but they are that way also in other parts of Salani. The other trees that are not in season are just not producing right now. The plants that I switch out in the greenhouse still produce just not as much as if they were in season.

Volcanic soil is generally very fertile so don't forget to put the good garden house trait on!

I didn't actually check that, should have of course :) I didn't keep the trait when I moved my sims there. I tried it a while, but couldn't work with it. It was just too inefficient for me :#

I've just read a lot of complaints on these forums about what does and doesn't work. Even things that should work. I plan on moving my couple from the 18th century onto the lot by the volcano, since we can't use the off the grid lot trait in Brindleton Bay. (They're just no fun at all.) ;)

The lot trait isn’t locked to Sulani if that’s what you meant, you can place it on any lot in any world. Just an FYI in case you didn’t already know ;-)

So far I've been able to grow in the ground on Sulani. Plantains, Pineapple, Coconut, Tomatoes, green pepper, green beans. All in gound, around the house (no greenhouse). Water, bug, and harvest are there, I've seen spray for bugs occasionally. Then I harvest things I was and put in the fridge and see the rest. You can still hire a gardener too.

That's really good news. As my ancestors did, I plan on having this couple sell much of their crops to earn money.

Oh, but I tried and it wasn't even on the menu! At least not for Brindleton Bay! Thanks. I'll have to explore other neighborhoods.

Okay, I will check to see if it's available in another town, and if not, I'll do a repair game. Again. This EP and its patch has created sheer havoc in my game. Not happily. Thanks for the confirmation, though. :)

Hi. I just thought I'd do a follow-up on my Off-The-Grid woes. I did a repair game and voila, I can now use that lot trait in the other towns! This is me smiling so hard my cheeks ache. :D

Thank you, All, for your your advice and encouraging words. I might never have realized the problem, otherwise. :)

YAY!! Now you can play your story as you wanted to. Keep us updated on your family's progress and add a couple of screenshots if you have the time. You always seem to have such interesting storylines. :)
