you only need to take a peek at the PC minimum system requirements of the Sims 4 to know that they held back on the graphics department to please the low end users
System requirements are not necessarily indicative of how the game actually looks or runs. Look at the Sims 3 minimum requirements. In reality, it needs well above that to actually run without hiccups on low settings let alone max. Intel GMA X3100 my butt.
As much as you want to believe it, the Sims 4's graphics are not bad and surpass the Sims 3 by quite a bit. The proof is in the pudding.
TS4 requirements are slightly higher, but personally i don't feel it looks better. I just don't like the cartoony art style. So at the end of the day it comes down to what you feel looks better, for me TS3 looks better. Even though the graphics isn't better it just looks better to me.

This x1000! My biggest gripe is that everyone is comparing a game that is 5 years old. The graphics in TS4 should blow TS3 out of the water. TS3 had plenty of problems, but it's 5 years old!!! Who cares what game has better graphics, they were not made at the same time. Take Oblivion vs. Skyrim. Skyrim's graphics blew Oblivion's away like it should have. TS4 should be getting compared to other games in 2014....not 2009
I don't know how anyone can say the environments of TS3 are ugly. I will say I didn't like the robotic Sim but the worlds and the objects and the houses are a far cry with details, details, from the TS4.

You were asking why people don't get style vs graphic quality and it's because if someone doesn't like a look they will call it plum, understanding the difference between the two matters not.
Personally I don't think the style is bad its just different then a lot of people was expecting in many ways Sims 3 was just trying to hard to be Serious and realistic specially when you remember the more Comical descriptions of certain items in Sims 1 and 2 which was all but absent in Sims 3 also I'm glad we got a return of job events which I missed from sims 3
Overwatch is a good correction but I don't do CC i prefer to play my Sim games as "God" intended namely my self :D

To be honest Sims 3 doesn't really look all that good no matter what graphics settings/mods you use. The graphics are just very outdated.
Before the first pictures of Sims 4 were released I hoped for a graphics like in GTA V but I was disappointed. That's why I never wasted my money on Sims 4. Sims 3 looks way better than 4 so I'll stay with that and have fun.
Anyway this is a comparison between Sims 3 and 4 and Sims 3 is the winner for me.

Love Sims 3. Played it to death. But after spending so much time with Sims 4 wow is it an ugly game.

I do play on highest settings. Strangely enough I've got a feeling it's my graphics card that's causing my 'wow-it's-way-too-hot-in-here-let's-shut-down-this-second' computer problem when I play Sims 4.
