If it goes to 3 hours, then more or less the game has probably frozen up due to lack of activity by the user himself. Kinda self-destructive though. Meh.

I don't care about shadows. I've played Sims 3 on both my XP on Boot Camp and Mac. Performance wise, they were both the same, except the XP had a tad less lag time. Both versions had the usual sudden freeze, stolen babies, silly story progression, etc.
Non-final copy of the Sims 3 being...? Torrented? Try uninstalling the final Sims 3 first, then trace out all the remainder files of the non-final. Then reinstall.
If a short Sim kisses with a tall Sim, there would be error in the interaction. Same as any other interaction in which involves them coming into contact with each other. Also, furniture is only catered to a height. Unless you get short Adults to do the same thing as children: get stools.
