When I played with it last, there's an automatic pop-up when it's time for the gig to start, like with the Get to Work active careers. I'm not sure of a work around if the pop-up doesn't trigger. You might need to take the L on that gig and try again when the family's vacation ends. :c

My suggestion would be to either wait until infants, or have your founding sims hold off on having babies until infants come out.
