The specs of a low end machine back in 2014 when the game was released differ significantly to what is regarded as a low end machine now. 32-bit is old technology and has been for years. Technology advances. Sooner or later we all have to upgrade our computers. This is not an usual move from a studio, especially as the game is now nearly 5 years old. Most games are already 64-bit only. If anything Maxis is playing catch up with the rest of the industry.

macOS has been 64-bit since 2009 so you’re fine. The game has also only ever been 64-bit in macOS. The 32-bit only applies to Windows users. The announcement about Metal only affects Mac users but if your Mac is a 2015 model then you will also be fine :)
