Hi! I have a question for you. So a couple of weeks ago I purchased a Macbook Pro 2018 with these specs:

    2.7GHz quad‑core 8th‑generation Intel Core i7 processor, Turbo Boost up to 4.5GHz
    Retina display with True Tone
    Touch Bar and Touch ID
    Intel Iris Plus Graphics 655
    16GB 2133MHz LPDDR3 memory
    256GB SSD storage
    Four Thunderbolt 3 ports
    Backlit Keyboard - US English

Anywho, I have installed windows on my mac through bootcamp and have downloaded all my EP's and base game for the sims 3 and am currently in the process of downloading my cc. I do have quite a few mods downloaded and some cc (all merged) with my Mods folder being 561 MB. I've experienced some lag in my game every now and then where it will freeze for 20 seconds then unfreeze. I was wondering if this is normal and will the sims 3 ruin my macbook? Thanks again!

I think that "ruining your MacBook" might be a bit harsh, but your deployment does raise a couple of questions.

-- Your MBP comes with (I think) a 256 GB SSD only. How did you partition it up to run Bootcamp, meaning what are the sizes of the two resulting partitions and how much free space is currently left on the Windows side? If you did half for each, then you only have a bit less than 128 GB on which to run Windows and the game, that's extremely difficult to do while keeping enough free space for Win 10 and the game to maneuver themselves.

-- Not so much a question, more of a comment and to set expectations, but your Mac does not have a dedicated graphics card. By switching to a Windows deployment you have removed the other hardware-related barriers that the newer Macs can present as well as the dreaded 2 GB restriction on RAM usage that the Mac version of the game unfortunately imposes. But on the Windows side, you still have integrated graphics. What might be considered "normal" gameplay to many of us on Windows with dedicated Nvidia or AMD cards isn't really the setup here; you may find that the heavier hitting EPs (Pets, Seasons, possibly IP, ITF) are too much for the Intel graphics chip and that the graphics settings in Game Options need to be turned way down to preserve performance. Things will tend to vary widely depending on the worlds being played, their resident populations, and whatever form of story progression you may be using.

Well I have given the windows partition 88GB however if needed to I am willing to restore my MBP to just the Mac partition and then reinstalling the windows partition with a bigger size. It says on my windows side I have 22 GB left of space and the only reason I have windows is for the sims 3. When it comes to graphics I honestly haven’t noticed any issues when it comes to gameplay; it looks fine to me. I guess what I am wondering is if I play in moderation and give my computer breaks and get it cleaned out regularly will I be okay? I ordered a cooling pad that has 5 different fans installed in it with pegs so it sits at an angle which should help my computer ventilate a bit better. I’m just really concerned for my computer more than how the graphics of the game look.

Also i’m really sorry i’ve bothered you with this. I just have done so much research and I would just like some more insight on my current situation and I’ve noticed you seem to know lots of information when it comes to sims 3 gameplay on macs.

Windows 10 requires at least 35 GB of free space to work with properly, and the game needs some free space as well for caching and especially when it loads up prior games into the Current Games folder and negotiates saves. We never advise trying to run the game off of an operating system partition that is smaller than 256 GB and even at that size, it still for many players becomes a constant struggle to maintain enough free space over time by offloading extra content stores and game saves, etc. to other drives or forms of storage.

You cannot have a 256 GB Windows partition when 256 GB is the only drive you have to work with and need to account for the Mac OS and whatever programs and data you may have going on the Mac side.

When playing on integrated graphics, the tasks that an otherwise dedicated graphics card handles must be carried by the processor and RAM. The stress that puts on the game and system are pretty high. Take a look at this page, if you could. It's pretty dated now and was originally written for TS2, but the basic concepts have not changed since then.

I really don't think this MBP is a good candidate for TS3 by way of Bootcamp. But if you must, if you can find a way to reserve and keep enough free space going for both Win 10 and the game, if you forego the heavier hitting EPs and yes keep things cool and ventilated, then you should probably be okay.

If you like, please feel free to post on the TS3 Mac section here or, even better, on the TS3 section of Answers.HQ to get a second or third opinion. :)

Thank you so much!! Last question, would it be advisable to just purchase an external graphics processors and have it connected to my computer?

The dedicated graphics cards I was talking about are internal; the GPU cannot be upgraded on most laptops including MacBook Pros.

The whole concept of external GPUs is pretty new, they are very expensive, and I have no idea if they could even work or provide any benefit here. Again, I would have to suggest checking in at Answers.HQ; there are expert Mac players there, I know some of them Bootcamp, and they may have or know of players who have had experiences with eGPUs.

We should have moved this conversation over to a forum board, sorry about that, but I can't really page any of them here since we are on my wall. Feel free to link to it, though.

I pasted it in above. Unfortunately links do not appear as clickable hyperlinks on wall posts. Copy and paste the following into a web browser.

(or Google TS3 Answers HQ, you should get to the same forum board over there either way)

Would this be about the new laptop purchase? Just saw that thread, but looks like you are in very good hands over there. :)

Hi! I heard your the nrass King! lmao I've been playing Sims 3 and everytime any of my sims have kids and they age up, they look JUST like their parents? I was wondering if you know how to allow the kids to have some of their own features? or if I have to set something on a certain number in nrass for this to work?

Hi there. I take it you are using NRaas StoryProgression, as these are both functions of that mod, as well as MasterController to make adjustments in each case when SP doesn't do exactly what was expected? I'm going to have to ask though if you could please bring your questions to us at NRaas. It's really awkward for me to try to support the mods through posts on my wall here, and it is kind of what we are all there for. :)
