Do I have the adequate 'specs' to play The Sims 3?

Hello

First up, I'm not great with computers so I have no idea what I'm talking about, hahahaha. I just want to play Sims 3 :( My brother-in-law is in I.T. so I can get him to install it/buy it. But he knows nothing about Sims and isn't here.

I'm having difficulty matching the 'minimum specs' thread to what I actually have.

I downloaded that CPU-Z thing that determines your computer's ******** and organs or whatever. People were talking about it. I also right clicked properties under My Computer and these were my results (I have no idea what I'm doing)

Oh, and I'm running Windows XP. I might be getting Vista in a week or two, but my brother-in-law told me to get Windows something something 7 instead.

Anyway, these were the results and I just wanted to know if I had the sufficient system requirements:

I've installed the game. It plays and loads quickly, but the graphics are just as bad as Sims 1. It's terrible. Upon turning them up to the highest quality (they were defaulted to the lowest possible), the screen went a bit darker in contrast for a few seconds, then went entirely black except for the "main user interface puck" at the bottom.
So I switched the settings back to low, then changed the settings back to high but this time changed the resolution from 600 x 800 to something like 1280 x 1024 and that worked. Except then everything lagged sooo badly. I was scrolling in and out trying to warm it up or something, but it was lagging and the graphics were so bad.

Anyway my question is how can I make it faster and improve the graphics? So that it's actually worth playing. I don't mind going out and buying more RAM, a better GHz P4 processor or a video card (🐸🐸🐸🐸 are all these things? hahahahah - price isn't an issue as my birthday was June 2nd :))

I really hope I don't have to buy a new computer. The one I have is 4 years old, but I bought it when I was 13 using childhood savings from birthday parties. Although from what I've heard on here, it's better to buy the parts and assemble your own computer...

Sorry I talk so much.
Thanks for reading and thanks heaps in advance to those who offer help :D:)

You need more ram and even after that your computer could just barely run it at minimum settings. You can try and install it but chances are it'll be more like a slide show than a game.

Your Ram meets the min requirements for being on XP, but we need to know what video card you have.

If your moving to Vista or Windows 7 then you will need more ram.. To be honest, your better of sticking with XP until they get Windows 7 in final stage and fully supported by the hardware companies.

That information is a lot more useful then a DXDiag.

Clear and concise, what you buy and where to buy iy:

Ok, awesome. If I have the minimum ram requirements, then will getting more ram anyway increase the speed/quality of the game/minimize loading time? Or will it make no difference? As for the video card...um, I have no idea, hahahahaha. I don't even know if I have one, that's how computer illiterate I am.
    Unless it's IN the computer.

    :-o
wow...I was expecting to pay $150-$400, so no...price is definitely not an issue for that last one. Even after the exchange rate though, that would only be like $AU 62.50
The I.T. brother-in-law said get an ATI or NVidia and said the slot to plug it in would probably be brown? hahhahaha, I don't know if that helps at all, it sounds pretty random to me.
Also, I'm in Australia so I'm not sure if I'd be able to buy that one. But the name/details of it help, so thankyou :):D
I think I'm going to go to one of these computer wholesalers though as opposed to a retailer. Does it matter how many MB a video card is? Like if I get a bigger one, will that be better?
    Thanks.

You need more ram and even after that your computer could just barely run it at minimum settings. You can try and install it but chances are it'll be more like a slide show than a game.

I'm playing it right now on minimum settings and it's working fine :D
I changed the screen size from 800 x 600 (4:3) to 1280 x 1024 (5:4) and now the graphics are way better. They've surpassed how they were yesterday (very reminiscent of Sims 1) and now they're on par with Sims 2 (maybe a little bit better).

Every setting is still on low though, but changing the screen size made a huge difference. But still, I want it to be better :( When I put them on high quality, it lagged, but it all looked sooo good.
    hahahaha

Ok, awesome. If I have the minimum ram requirements, then will getting more ram anyway increase the speed/quality of the game/minimize loading time? Or will it make no difference? As for the video card...um, I have no idea, hahahahaha. I don't even know if I have one, that's how computer illiterate I am.
    Unless it's IN the computer.

    Thankyou :D
    Will do.

The problem is that you are looking at the minimum requirements, and then assuming that the minimum is enough to run the game at higher resolutions with more features enabled. This is something many people do not seem to understand. Minimum means you need that in order for the game to run, but with all features enabled, you will want more than just the minimum.

Now, when it comes to graphics, the amount of memory available for graphics is critical. If you have enough graphics memory to handle the game at lower resolutions but not at higher resolutions, then that IS what you are looking at for the source of your problem.

The problem with suggesting you just replace your video card is that you will STILL be running on a computer barely above the minimum requirements. The requirements call for a Pentium 4 2.4GHz, and that machine is a Pentium 4 3GHz. These days, you really want at least a dual-core processor with 3GB of memory and preferably NVIDIA or AMD/ATI graphics. Adding a real video card(even a $50 card will be an improvement) would also be a huge help over the integrated graphics you see in systems out there(even those with AMD/ATI or NVIDIA graphics).

In short, if you have a Pentium 4 based machine, it really is time to replace the machine if you want to play games. The very last Pentium 4 processors were released back in 2006, but most people have had their P4 based machines for four years or more, and the four year mark is really where people should just replace their computers, because the new computer will be MUCH faster than the old one at that point.

These days, you can get a computer with a dual-core processor(each core is easily the speed of a Pentium 4 3.8GHz), 3GB of memory, and integrated graphics for $350 to $400 US Dollars. While the graphics in such a machine are not great, overall, the move from single-core to dual core alone makes a huge difference in terms of how well things work. Adding a cheap video card to a machine like that(as long as you have the PCI Express slot in the new machine) will help make the game even more suitable for games than many might expect.

What?! I have to buy an entirely new computer just to play The Sims 3 :(
I don't know if it's really worth it, especially if I'm just going to be in the same predicament in 4 years time in June 2013.
If The Sims 3 is appealing to a rather mass market, then why did EA only make it usable and playable by those with ridiculously current and updated computers? (you don't have to answer that...just thinking out loud)
The reason I bought my current computer was because Sims 2 didn't work on my parent's computer. This sucks. You buy video games for computers. Not computers for video games.

I know that if I buy a new computer I can still keep my monitor, keyboard, mouse, tablet, speakers, external hard drive, portable hard drive and all that junk. So it's not entirely a waste, it's just really, really annoying. Maybe I could buy a dodgy old monitor and go on msn on my current computer and play Sims on my potential new one :)

Anyway, thanks heaps for your input. I really appreciate it and I'll forward it to my sister's husband. (It's so frustrating not really knowing what you're talking about  )
    Thank you!!!

These are my results from 'Can you run it?'
Hopefully they can determine what it is I need to buy. CPU, Operating System, Video Card? Are they updateable without replacing the whole computer?

How ironic. Seasons was the last expansion pack I bought before I stopped playing.
How does The Sims 3 run for you?

Is everything on high in those pictures?
Or can I get an even newer graphics card than your 8600 gt and exceed your graphics quality, hahahaha

Well let me tell you something. Buying a new graphics card needs enough power from the processor and ram to calculate otherwise your graphics card would be "overkill".. and your graphics card would be limited because it doesn't have enough processing speed! The 2 most important parts frame wise are the processor and graphics card, those to have to work together alot! If you plan on buying the 8600GT, okay but keep in mind that people with a Core 2 Duo processor would get better performance out of it than you with a Pentium 4! Though I'm pretty confident that if you add a little of ram and buy the 8600GT you'd be playing TS3 alot better!

ps: Bare in mind that a computer system needs a proper power supply, whenever you feel it's pretty unstable or the system starts failing the first thing you should check is if the power supply can keep up with the processor and graphics card.. Pentium is alot consuming and the 8600GT is somewhat medium though that could be an issue! :?:
