Build-n-Share Weekly Challenge #66-67 -- Sets, Take One! Action!

AnjubeeAnjubee Posts: 1,935 Member
Welcome to the Build-n-Share Weekly Challenge!

The Build-n-Share challenges will be posted Wednesday of each week and run through the following Wednesday. Results will be posted approximately one week after all entries have been submitted in the Winner's Circle thread.

The benefits
First place will be awarded at all levels. If there are at least eight entries in a category, up to four places will also be announced.

Weekly challenges also create an opportunity for community on the forum site. We get to know one another’s names, share news, builds, and positive words. This is a chance to get your name out there, and hopefully make a few friends along the way.

What makes this challenge different from all the other ones I've seen?
We have been hosting this weekly challenge since the first week the game was released. We have many levels of builders in our community and welcome th em all. This group is truly a product of all its great members!

Within the first few challenges, our group was recognized by the gurus that be, who have helped the weekly challenges gain even more popularity be stickying both Build-n-Share threads. Since then, we have had at least one featured creation almost every week, and our list of featured members continues to grow.

With 3 successful collaborative neighborhoods (Gnomelandia, Summer of Love, and NYC) just about completed, Build-n-Share hopes to bring more creative challenges and new neighborhood ideas to the community with the help of our dedicated participants who willingly contribute and help each week to make sure each challenge runs smoothly.

The rules

All entries must be original work. Any competitor who submits another builder’s work will be disqualified and banned from any future Build-n-Share challenge. These competitors will also be removed from the Builders' Boulevard related websites if they have chosen to join (membership to the site and the Yahoo! group are not required to enter a Build-n-Share challenge).

Please announce your official lot posting using the entry form below. Make sure to leave the "Official Entry" label big. If you need to reformat it, you can do this by highlighting the desired text and then selecting "Big" in the font box above. This will help us see the entries in a sea of posts with no pics to guide us.

Entries must be submitted by the deadline, 7 p.m. Wednesday evening (eastern time, USA).

Your media should include a variety of screenshots to best showcase your entry. Please include at least one clear shot of the main floorplan of the build. If your build has multiple floors, please take a screenshot of each floor.

A description of the five major level categories

Beginner
--I have a little experience, but I'm still figuring a lot of things out. I would not call myself an official "builder" at this point.

Beginner/Intermediate--I have a little more experience, but I'm just not sure yet about that leap up to "intermediate."

Intermediate--I have been building for awhile. I know the basics and maybe a little more. I enjoy building, but it is not my primary focus with the game.

Intermediate-Advanced--I'm getting pretty comfortable, but I want just a little more practice before entering on the top level.

Advanced--I know the Sims, and the Sims knows me. My name is familiar to a lot of veteran players, and I've competed in and won some building challenges and maybe even been recognized in a community showcase or two. I know most of the cheats AND I know how to use them.

Two additional opportunities
Love to build? Come join us at http://www.buildersboulevard.com . The site offers an additional forum for advertising lots, share tips and tricks, and participate in collaborative neighborhood projects!

We also have a Yahoo! Group for builders. It can be accessed at http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/buildersboulevard/ . You do not have to be a member to enter. This group will be used primarily as an announcement center and for some of our more complex polls, and possibly, databases.

    This Week’s Challenge Specifics:
Challenge deadline: Wednesday, September 22nd at 7 p.m. (Eastern time)

    . . .
    Sets, Take One! Action!

In anticipation for the Sims International Films Festival and the Late Night expansion, I thought this would be a good time to tackle an idea I've had for awhile. It is something a few of us flip team members teamed up together to do for Fidler's Extreme Mansion Challenge. We created a giant movie mansion on a 60x60 lot with over 30 different sets that can be used for storytelling.

If you would like to see what we did, you can check out the thread here: http://forum.thesims3.com/jforum/posts/list/116958.page

We were successful for the most part, but the major problem with our lot was that it was simply TOO BIG! We put so much detail into it, the lot was pretty bulky and took a long time to load for those who didn't run sims on good computers.

For the longest time, I've been meaning to create mini sets on 30x30 lots to make it less cumbersome. Since I've never gotten around to it and since I know you guys can be super creative, I figured I should make this into a challenge to see how you guys do!

Please pick one theme from the list below and build a movie set consisting of the following interiors that aren't easy to find in game: a restaurant or bar, a bookstore, an office, a hospital room, and a classroom. You may add any other rooms you can think of that may be appropriate to the theme, but please keep in mind that you only have a 30x30 lot to work with. For the exteriors, you are free to make it however you want, whether it is keeping with the theme or if you would like it to make it look like a studio building.

Here are the themes for you to choose from:

    - Haunted/Abandoned
    - 60s and 70s Retro
    - Futuristic/Sci-Fi
    - Victorian

If you have any other themes you can think of and would like to try, please post your idea and we'll see if it's doable.

    There is no budget.

Lot type does not matter, but you should discreetly make sure the lot is playable enough for sims to satisfy their needs if they were wandering around on free will.

No CC except custom patterns allowed! Since we are building this for the story telling community, we want to make sure it is easily accessible. You can use any items from the base game, expansions, stuff packs, and even store items. But please keep in mind not to use too many store items because once again, we want to make our sets as easy as possible to utilize. This may just be the most challenging part for some of you! :)

Also please make sure to make it clear either in your lot name or lot description that the lot is meant to be used as a set for storytelling. It makes it easier to find for people who are looking for sets. :)

Feel free to ask any questions you may have.

    ACTION!

    Screenshots: Tips and Tricks

Since judging will be based on screenshots, we figured this would be a good time to go over some tips and tricks in taking good screenshots to help showcase your lovely builds.

    1) Camera Man Mode - This is a must in taking good shots! You will have to be in live mode to do this, but just hit "TAB" to enter this mode. Once you are in this mode, you can use the mouse to freely control the angles and use "W, A, S, D" buttons to move forward, backwards, and side to side. "Z" zooms in, "X" zooms out. "Q" moves up and "E" moves down. "C" to capture the shot.

    2) Find the perfect angle - With photography, it is all about finding the right angle. Spend some time in camera man mode to find the perfect angle. Get down to a sim's point of view to take the best shots of rooms.

    3) Walls up - Most people play with walls cut away, but when you are taking pictures of your lot, try to keep your walls up to make your shots look more realistic.

    4) No grids - Unless you need to show the grid for a specific purpose, make sure no build/buy grid is visible when you take your pictures. You can avoid this by taking pictures in live mode or by hitting the terrain paint button in build mode.

    5) More is better—Weird, huh? But in this case, we want to make sure judges have enough shots to fairly judge your lot. Be sure to show off each room with at least one picture. Also, please include an overhead shot of the floorplan for each level.

Ok, those are the basics! If you want to further your simatography skills, we highly recommend you visit http://simatography.webs.com for more tips and tricks and to see some excellent shots taken by professional simatographers!

Please try to keep this thread as photo free as possible and either create a story, a slide show, a separate thread, or use the stickied photo thread to post shots of your lots!

Hello Anjubee. Nice :) I like this week's B-n-S Challenge :D Simtographers and Machinima Makers can use any of the entries here for their projects. The challenge is like building a Themed mini-Universal Studios. Genius! We are looking forward on everyone's builds.

Hey Freynas, enjoy your vacation :)

Congratulations on your 8th anniversary! I'm coming up on my 11th, September seems to be a popular month for those. :D Have a great vacation!

On a side note: I've never done a challenge like this before or a build like this, but now that school's pretty much started and we're good on our schedules....now I have something to do during the day. Can't wait to give it a try!

Hello! This week challenge is so exiting, I think I'm going to do more than one and then decide which one to submit!

On another subject, I tried to find a place where to write this, but found none. I'd like to submit a challenge idea to the B-n-S team. I don't know if this has been before, but I was thinking this morning about doing some church for one of my neighborhood and though, that it would be an interesting challenge to do! Now religion is usually not something we want to bring in online gaming, but I thought we might want to do something ''inspired by'' and have different theme suggested to the players. Ex: pagan/celtic, asian, roman/greek, catholic/european. The point would be to create a lot with a fun temple/church/cult community lot.

Thanks! Going back to work on my Sci-Fi Club!!

Oh My Goodness~ This is so hard but I'm gonna give it a try. I like the challenge only because 1) I can't use CC and 2) I don't have expansion packs. Given those two conditions against me, I would love to come up with something as awesome only using the base game items.

    ^_____^ It's gonna be challenging!

This is quite a tough challenge, but I think you guys can handle it!

Kiarane: We welcome all ideas! Religion is a bit of a touchy subject though and while we can hope everyone looks at things from an architectural point of view, I can also see some details upsetting some folks. I think we would have to be pretty specific in what is allowed and what's not. I'll think about it a little though to see if there's a way we can work it in! :)

mgolden27: Yep! Buydebug stuff is always allowed unless stated otherwise.

I've definitely never tried anything like this before... I initially thought we had to choose one set and one theme, before realising we had to do all sets...gotta say Victorian would be hard, i'm thinking retro a definite challenge...i suppose sci fi and haunted will be the popular choices too... hmmmm..what to choose...

I have an idea...and have been wanting to create a community build for awhile (though I plan on zoning residential, if that's OK?)...but I hope I can finish in time. 8)

    Great idea, Anjubee!
