@Simmingal I know, I did see EACade's post about that, I guess I'm just pessimistic about the chances that it will ever actually happen. I guess I figure it will go the way of the pack refreshes and all the other things they've said they're going to work on and then we never hear anything about it again.

I'm not even so much annoyed that I don't get to have my avatar as I am that as a person who remembers faces over names that it's going to be so much harder for me to figure out who is posting what. Gone are the days when I could just glance at the avatar and go, Oh yeah. Also I'm a bit salty about the teeny circles. I can barely see them! I'm really going to miss our big square avatars. :'(

These forums are really my worst fear come true, an AHQ 2.0. Ugh.

After revisiting the new forums this morning, i don't like the idea of most recent at the top. Scrolling down really confuses me because there's most recent posts jumbled up with posts from five months ago and even in some threads 10 years ago. The forums really need page numbers.

Well, since I can only access the new forum on my phone, I have started two old game threads that didn't get migrated for my own amusement on my phone, since I can't do anything else there!

It’s like they put Vlad, Judith Ward, Nancy Landgraab, Nick Alto and Agnes Crumplebottom in charge of forum development, and they stripped out everything that makes a forum fun.

But, we can directly upload images, so there’s that. That was Bob Pancakes idea.

    Where?

I bet that won't last, it'll cost too much. Unless there's a new technology or ... ? Has to be a glitch. Or has a catch.

Yeah it still looks like chaos to me. All of the threads I can see are ancient and closed.

Its a good time to catch up on some playing. Or clean up my room. Read a classic. Homer.

A large part of it is the avatars. Nitpicky I know, but the fact that only the heroes and staff and such get to have a customized avatar will always smack of elitism. It feels exclusionary, and it rankles me. Please understand I hold nothing against the folks who through their helpfulness and engagement have earned the customized avatars, I just don't believe that for a fan forum, anyone needs to earn this "privilege". I'm annoyed at the company, not my fellow simmers.
This is exactly what bothers me the most, in addition to the automatic focusing on The Most Recent, The Most Viewed, etc.
I have nothing against any fellow Simmers either, but this emphasis on heroes with privileges and minions without is so devastating.
This Forum has been a sanctuary where you have been able to cultivate the special interest you have in the game with other Simmers regardless of their rank and general popularity. The entire structure of the forum has made it easy to navigate.
This cultivation of elitism leaves me with a feeling of loneliness. For me it's a killer because I don't want to be in a Forum where I have to be confirmed daily that I'm invisible and therefore unimportant.

Apart from that, I think there are many others in this thread who have helped to point out problems and proposed solutions better than I can, so I will stop here.

At the moment, I don't like the new forums. And I'm not just resistant to change! I'm just resistant to bad design.

    1) No custom avatars except for certain ranks. Yes, I know that it's "being looked into". But that means it's not a guarantee. The fact that you chose a forum style without first ensuring that users would all be able to choose an avatar is really telling. This should have been a bigger priority, because nothing makes me feel less welcome on the new forum than you taking away a feature I had here and telling me that only your chosen ranks get it now. This should have been looked into and set up before you launched.

(As an aside: I don't really want my EA account avatar for the new forum. I chose a Sims-related avatar for a Sims-related forum.)

    2) Nested replies makes finding new responses harder. I read a lot of threads, and I appreciate that I can read them in chronological order. Having to jump back up to nested replies - on the off chance that there is something new - makes reading through the flow of a conversation incredibly difficult.

    3) "Show More" instead of page numbers is a pain to load. My browser will eventually give up on loading if a thread gets to be too long. If I can't load an entire thread, I can't read it.

    4) Forum posts are small and hard to distinguish from each other. On this forum, avatars are big and I can quickly tell when I'm finishing one post and starting another from a different user. On the new forum, I can see when someone has finished their comment, but all of the posts feel more "collapsed" and it's a lot easier for my eyes to slip over posts without fully taking them in.

    5) The new forum feels cluttered. When I read a thread on here, my eyes are drawn only to the posts/replies in the specific thread. On the new forum, the sidebar of related posts/recent discussions ends up drawing my eye and makes the browsing/reading experience less enjoyable.

I was actually expecting the new forum to be closer to the Answers HQ style, which is - bizarrely - a bit more like this forum. Posts are more distinct, avatars are large and noticeable, browsing is done through page numbers. The biggest issue for me with the Answers HQ style is that the posts column is too thin, like it was designed for viewing on a phone (which feels a bit silly because most of EA's games are probably played on PC or console).

The new forums feel frustrating to participate in. They feel oddly devoid of character, and easy to ignore, like when you see a bunch of example posts on a blog that are written in Latin. It does not feel like an upgrade or even a pleasant side-grade experience.

This was also my first impression. I hope they do consider bringing back the page numbers. Constantly scrolling through posts makes you miss any points in a discussion.

I'd vote for page mumbers too. Doesn't take so much time as scrolling.

I asked this in the other thread, but are the threads currently present on the new forum the only ones that migrated? My thread was not migrated even though it fulfilled the requirements to do so without needing to be nominated. I don't mind terribly if I have to re-create the structure on the new forums but it'd be annoying and a shame to lose the views and the comments. I've used the search function but it only brings up really old threads... any insight? Am I missing something? I put my story on hold while waiting for the new forums (because I have almost zero readers without them) and now that they're here I'm disappointed that it seems like I do indeed have to start from scratch.

Aside from that, I agree with everyone that the new site is a major downgrade. I'm especially annoyed with the fact that I'm a new spectator now with no badges and no past interactions with any sort of thread. The AHQ look and system is not conducive to fluid conversations at all... it's a shame, I was so excited for the new forums.

ETA: Also, no way to preview posts? That's really annoying when creating long posts, sigh.

So, I tried an experiment... re-posting some things from my current story over on the new forum. Of course, I ran into the "you have exceeded your maximum posts" thing fairly quickly. Looks like I can only post about four replies withing a limited time frame before it locks me out for I don't know how long. I get that it's an anti-spam thing and this forum has something similar but it seems a little restrictive. Not sure if it really is more restrictive or if it just feels that way because of what I'm doing.

All in all, it's been an interesting experiment, especially in that I'm not trying to build on a migrated post but starting fresh.

Edit - Yeah, the "don't post a lot" feature seems very restrictive and appears to get progressively more restrictive... earlier this morning, I could make or edit 4 posts and then had to stop for 5 minutes or so before continuing. Now I can make 2 posts and have to stop for more than 10 minutes. That really seems to kill the possibility of an ongoing discussion, IMO.

@ajmkv, your thread did get moved over there as it was put into The Sims 4 Creative Corner section. But I will provide the link for it for you to click on.

    Hope this helps... :)

Edit to say that none of the pictures transferred over, so you would have to replace them if you want to... :)

It's weird that some can upload custom avatars, but many can't. I guess you have to be a special member?

@Goodywood, yes, only those with special ranks i.e: Heroes and higher can have custom avatars. But @EA_Cade said on the 1st page of this thread that they are looking into a system that will link your EA app and EA forum avatars.

Oh ok @lisasc360 . Thank you for letting me know.

I find this a bit unfair. Not sure why they did it this way.

    You're welcome @Goodywood... :)

I agree with you but hopefully they can figure out a way for other members to have custom avatars as well. I guess when they designed the site that they based it on the AHQ site as it's the same way there as well with only certain ranks being able to use custom avatars as well as having signatures.

Interesting... For 10 hours now, after some time not posting anything and being able to post fine at the moment, I'm back at this error message:
    Content Not Published
You’ve exceeded the maximum number of posts you can publish. Try again later.

I'm actually beginning to wonder if this has anything to do with wi-fi strength...
    I'll... have to see...

@EA_Cade will the nominated threads be moved to the correct forum sections? Currently they're all in the Sims Franchise forum.
  • MonaSolstraaleMonaSolstraale Posts: 1,433 Member

I'm getting a bit confused as to which moderators are reading this feedback thread? Following @EA_Cade 's suggestion, I've posted some concerns to EA's Forum Launch Questions & Feedback board.

I received a reply from Community Admin EA_Spectre quite quickly regarding the construction of the page. Maybe there are more forum members who want to participate in the debate or start another kind of debate there.

I'm sorry if this has already been asked, I don't have time to read the whole thread.
Is there a possibility to change the new forum username because it uses my EA account username and I'd like to be Kimmer like I've been here on this forum for years already?
The whole forum is so difficult to use and if I can't even have my usual Sims 4 forum username in there it's very disappointing. :/

I don‘t like the new forum - because of the same reasons many have posted already. This forum is like a one size fits all shirt. Nothing individually for the Sims community as this forum here was. In these days individuality costs money, money companies don‘t want to pay because individuality doesn‘t create revenue (in their eyes). I think individualization keeps your customer happy because they feel heard and cared for. In my opinion those customers are more likely to spend money on packs than others. But that is just my opinion because that‘s the way I feel as a customer.

But there is a bright side to the new forum for me - since I don‘t like it - I won‘t spend time there and therefore have more time for other things. Reading books for example - no unwanted ads, no daily login rewards stored in an easy to lose file, no internet connection necessary for reading. Or knitting socks - they keep your feet warm in winter.

For those who like or will like the new forum - enjoy, have fun, make it your happy place!

@kusurusu, it probably didn't migrate over if the person who started the thread over here doesn't have the same user name over on the AHQ site.

I think most feedback that can be given about what is missing on the new forum has already been given (much of which I agree with) so currently I don't have much to add, but.. I just received an e-mail notifying me that I earned a badge for making 250 new discussions... and sure enough, it says so on my profile...

    BR9KfKK.png

..but I'm pretty sure I haven't done that. On this forum I only have four new threads to my name.. where are the 246 others? ;) Also, an impressive feat since I apparently haven't skimmed through to much more than 100 posts...
