Yeah, I like building, but sometimes I just want to get right down to decorating. That's why I appreciate seeing shells on the gallery. If I do a build, I will often post a shell version to the gallery before I complete it because I know there are lots of people who just like decorating.

Isn't there an option to just place unfurnished?
Yes, but, personally, I often don't trust it not to strip out certain things that I would like to keep. For example, maybe I want to keep the kitchen. If I find a build I like but I don't like some of the decor, I'll manually delete/replace that decor. YMMV of course.
Almost all of the above (apart from columns which I don't mind at all). But overall, excessive landscaping, excessive clutter, excessive shelving - in one build every single window was doubled for no reason whatsoever... Overall, I find many builds overdone. They might look fantastic at first glance, but with so much stuff it makes the game laggy, the routing hard and sometimes items completely useless.
I once found a fantastic beautiful remake of the Titanic, absolutely gorgeous! But there wasn't a single staircase to move from floor to floor (the grand staircase was created from shelves and utterly stunning but completely unusable) and most of the doors blocked. Perhaps it is because I am a practical player who focus more on gameplay that I don't understand the point of gorgeous but unplayable builds.
Moreover, I advise that the cart button must be destroyed!
Oh...those metal monkey bars that everyone seems to love to stick in the back yard for children. It drives me crazy, it's playground equipment. I've never seen a home that has one, at least, not in my region. On that note, I also delete kids/toddlers/babies rooms and redesign for older Sims because I don't usually need them and it seems like every residential house on the gallery has a room dedicated to offspring.
If bedrooms have televisions, I delete them. I get rid of most computers, and if there's a plethora of random giant activity objects, those go too, or I'll choose one that fits my household. I also don't like excessive clutter, but I tend to avoid those builds altogether now, because it can be too time consuming to sort through. I've come to realize that it's much easier for me (and preferable) to add what I need in a lot with extra space, rather than have to rearrange and sift and delete a bunch of stuff. Plus, I get to choose the aesthetic more and make it unique to my needs.
I also tend to change furniture styles I don't like, and remove/alter swimming pools. Sims autonomy isn't programmed very well, so they'll go jump in the pool on the coldest days and then complain that they're freezing to death. Sim autonomy is also why I've been keeping fewer and more specific objects in their homes because they'll obsess over random items that make no sense to their personality.
Clutter. There is always too much. Then excessive paintings and decorations, and excessive landscaping. Sometimes it's quicker to load the lot unfurnished and redecorate it than it is to delete the preposterous amount of clutter.
Saucer lights/bad lighting (personal dislike of mine)
As I said I mostly build my own sims homes but sometimes if I want to add a family member or move out a grown up child who isn't essential t the story, to save time I will download from the gallery if I see one I like and there are loads of fabulous builds there.
I had no idea that those awful bath mats appear because I haven't got the pack that contains whatever was there before - why not just leave it out altogether? Just have no rug?!!
I always play with walls down so I use wall lights to light my properties as I don't even like the warm light of the saucers. I am not a gardener IRL so lots of landscaping is a no no I also take off any plants clinging to walls as they always show on walls down - same for pillars and columns.
I do find that dark flooring and decor seem to be really popular, I always use light flooring (helps with lighting the property) unless its a historical sims story. I recently found out (after 14 yrs of Sims!!) how to download MCCC which has been so helpful in my game. Also downloading CC so I've been having a ball finding wall coverings, rugs etc - didn't realise it was so easy to download!!
All of the answers and simply just the excessive clutter, but quite a lot of times I playtest the builds first (if there's no mention that it's already playtested) and delete the furniture and items that can't be used or if they block the access of some areas. It happens a lot, so I've learned to do it first.
I love the gallery builds and they are very important to me because I can't build at all, but I wish the builders would playtest their creations first if they're meant to be used in the game. I know some of the builds are actually meant to be just viewed and it's fine, but I wish there'd be a mention somewhere about it.
One other things I delete or not necessarily delete but "fix" is the too much enlargened items, especially plants or paintings. And by "fixing" I mean I change them back to their original size or just make them a bit smaller if they're enlargened too much. Some items often look weird and sometimes the graphics look blurry when they're enlargened too much.
To save time I tend to use the builds that are made by builders that I know are playtesting their builds and I can trust there are no problems with the things I mentioned, so nowadays I'm quite happy with everything I download.
Thanks for everyone who are sharing their amazing builds in the gallery.
It depends on the household. If I have a household I don’t cheat with I will usually put their furniture in the house. If there is clutter or furniture I don’t like I will get rid of it. I usually like the way builders landscape. There is rarely a lot I don’t change something on! I build very few houses myself, but the interior is changed often. I do rather enjoy building commercial lots once in awhile.
Excessive planting/landscaping - including 50 pieces of ivy on the same piece of wall!
I usually remove the clutter. Excessive plants, items, shelves, carpets, bookshelves. Some small houses were made with move objects on and I can't try to move one thing or two like a bed or side table without having to use the cheat.

Okay your honors I plead quilty on these accounts. I have indeed been exposed 😅
In my defense monkey bars are useful for kids aspirations in worlds there is no off lot playgrounds
and my sims have many nooboos and grandmas for that matter.
Also I enjoy watching tv in bed and eating snacks with my loved ones (Dork).
I also sometimes commit the highest crime of rooms unroutable
with some towers that would otherwise be purely decorative
but I like to imagine sims use transportalate or bat form to get in
it would be nice if we had hatch ladder for some attics and basements though I admit
I just don't like the ladder to always be in the way
Kudos to all the seriously talented builders in the simming community, many of whom I follow and watch their building streams or their how-to guides... Thank-you for all your tips and tricks that I use in my general builds and many extra thanks for taking the time to create magnificent builds that I would never have the patience or skill to do myself. My favourite build actually had a treehouse which you could enter and had lots of kids gameplay, a toddler splash pool incorporated into the general pool (both of which I can now do) and a dog house in the back yard that I still can’t recreate!
After downloading, the first check/fix is any routing issues, then any unnecessary furniture, hobby items, appliances, excessive indoor plants, clutter and finally any excessive landscaping.
Saucer lights/bad lighting (personal dislike of mine)
I am also a builder, but I do have my favorite gallery builders. I usually redo the lights. I like lights to be placed tastefully and in a style appropriate for the room.
The Sims is not a game; it's a lifestyle choice.
My Plumbbob is green today
The few times I've downloaded lots from the Gallery (and I have to admit there are some very nice builds, impressive builds there) I often find myself having to de-clutter the house before I move my Sims in. This last time around, I needed to create the look of another planet. I chose Oasis Spring, but it didn't quite fit the bill. I found a mod and used Strangerville to get rid of the scenario. Then I went on a search for futuristic builds. (I prefer Craftsman homes and profiles like them in RL) the more modern look feels less than homey to me, but that's just me. I would never find myself in an industrial building turned apartment, for instance. Too cold, too sterile for me.
This most recent time I had to add a few things, rather than remove clutter. I put an archway in the wall between the two small bedrooms, and added a kitchen island, since the kitchen was on the skimpy side. Narrow room with only two counters to work with. It's a very charming house, though. I added wallpaper in the living room and in the bedrooms. I could use more color, but for now, it's just fine. Besides, the couple has two kids, so far, with at least three more on the agenda. They most certainly will have to move perhaps, sooner than later. Maybe by then I'll be inspired to build a new place for them.

My problem with that is that sometimes, it's hard to distinguish which room(s) are to be bathrooms, and which one the kitchen. Can be quite the puzzler depending on the floorplan. I did have fun once with a shell I downloaded. I may try it again, soon.
@Lief you said: On that note, I also delete kids/toddlers/babies rooms and redesign for older Sims because I don't usually need them and it seems like every residential house on the gallery has a room dedicated to offspring."
Recently, I had to remove a couple of rooms meant for older children/teens, as my current family has a Toddler and an Infant. I go in and make the changes my Sim family need. I think that's expected. I hope people who may have downloaded some of my builds feel free to knock out walls, change rooms, etc. Have fun!
@CAPTAIN_NXR7 Thanks for my Afternoon Chuckle. Seems we are of a like mind. A bookcase in front of the door. in front of the door. Perhaps, the builder forgot to put the door in, placed the bookcase, and then forgot it was there. Noticed there was no way into the space, outdoors, etc. and slapped the door in there last minute?

I have no problem removing walls and resizing rooms. Sometimes, I only want the outside of the building. I am terrible at building roofs, so I will take a shell and gut everything, including the inside walls. I will then do a new floorplan. I do it to avoid trying to build roofs. I also try not to move stairs, but I don't find them difficult to place elsewhere. It is time consuming to gut it all, so I try not to do it often.
Excessive planting/landscaping - including 50 pieces of ivy on the same piece of wall!
I usually get rid of the trees... This isn't limited to trees, but I'll delete anything that doesn't go "invisible" with the walls down. It's hard to play when I've got objects in the way.
Like SJM? Like Kpop? Like Greek Mythology?

Excessive clutter and cars are usually first to go after I remove trees or bushes that consistently get in the way or clip through the house. I usually turn any 'garage' space into a new room.

I always assumed it was a default substitute for some kind of cc because you’re right - it gets everywhere!
It pops up in the strangest places on gallery builds and I can only imagine it’s not supposed to be there.
What is with that?
