First things that you delete from gallery builds! (for fun post!)

«13
This is a light hearted poll about our lovely Gallery builds, some beautiful inspiring builds exist there. But some home furnishings can be a little too much or not enough? I rarely download as I am a builder (and would do it without furnishings) and I like open plan with white wooden floors, pale furniture and the same in the decor, as I always play walls down :)

The clutter!! My heavens but there's a lot of clutter. In some houses I can find at least one bookcase in every room, the lights are ridiculous, one on top of the other. I mean, what's the purpose of this?

There is clutter everywhere that has no relevance to anything else in there...just to take up a space. I happen to like spaces, that is why clutter is the very first to go. >:)
In my house, dog hair sticks to everything but the dog.

TV. I don't have a TV in real life and my Sims typically don't have one either.

    All of the above.

I'm so very thankful for all the wonderful builders. I'd be lost without them. But I do usually remove all the choices.

I usually keep most of the builds from the Gallery. Since I don't own all the packs, some of the stuff used won't show up in the build, so that means a lot of clutter already disappears.
However, some rooms I will delete some furniture, and replace it to fit the size of the family I move in. I will delete the toddlers stuff, and either make it a kid's room, and a teen's room.
I have had to delete some walls, and other things so my Sim could access their house. Some builds are made to look good, but don't have doors and rooms that function, so I have to add some things, and delete some things, so my Sims can actually enjoy their house.

I usually delete clutter and anything that causes issues when playtesting and checking routing and accessibility to objects. Sometimes I've had to rebuild entire sections because of bad routing or bad layout or too many objects placed with MOO and TOOL. Also, windows on every wall like they are paintings.

I think the items I tend to delete the most are artwork. It’s usually because the household I move into the house has their own art and photos created by family members.

Saucer lights/bad lighting (personal dislike of mine)
    1. excessive saucers, decor, plants, columns
    2. clipping items i don't see need for
    3. items/build features i don't like
    4. no gameplay rooms/repetitive rooms
    5. landscaping that does not suit the world/lot

As builder myself I don't download many builds but this is roughly how I go about it with pack builds I keep and edit

I think the key word is repetitive/excessive things like billion saucers in one room or same painting in every room when one is quite enough and way more realistic

overall I just go gameplay first then decor where needed like if i think i need hallway table... could the table be dresser? mayhaps even a desk? maybe its not table at all maybe its pipe organ? or if not mayhaps stereo?

and as for columns I'm just annoyed that those never show when i want them to (live mode, walls up, viewing close) but show when i don't want them to (viewing far away, walls down)

so I don't really want to have many of those inside the build if its avoidable

theres also some build features like having billion different platform heights in normal family house which i just want to avoid cause it seems very silly to me to have sims jumping about room to room

Builders must have their screen at a different brightness level than mine or something. So many builds are wayyyyy too blazingly bright.

I think that the turquoise mats take the place of rugs that you don’t own. I always wondered that myself, because I hate that mat and would never ever use it. However when I downloaded one of my own builds to my account that doesn’t have any packs, some of the rugs had been replaced with that. So, it’s not always something the builder does.
All my daily trances, and all my nightly dreams, are where thy grey eye glances, and where thy footstep gleams.
I dance to the beat of my own drum, no matter how measured or far away.
I do love a road. You can always be wondering what is at the end of it.

That or their irl room is also overly bright/sunny most of the time

realized this one sunny day when i couldn't see a thing in my own dark builds and then i closed the curtain and went "oh" 😅

suddenly it all made way more sense

Being in control of the entire build process is very important to me, so I usually create my own structures, including interior. I find building extremely enjoyable and therapeutic too PLUS I know exactly what I want. It’s a Win Win. That being said, sometimes I just need something quick for a story that I’m exploring, which means I do occasionally download awesome builds created by other people. There’s a lot of talent out there!

The first thing I delete? Obstructions. In fact, I rarely delete decor that does NOT cause routing issues. If I’m in a patient mood, I will “fix” the build. I’m usually not in a patient mood however, especially when it comes to builds with over two routing issues. In that case, the bulldozer is my best friend. Begone ye cursed thing.

I seriously 🤬❌💢‼️🪓 beautiful builds that are unplayable due to people not play-testing them. One or two accessibility errors can be easily forgiven, we’re only human. I understand how much time it takes to build stuff, but it only requires a bit of extra effort to play-test the darn thing, but no. For some folks it’s just MOO and share. Why? WHY?? WHY ON EARTH WAS IT NECESSARY TO PLACE A BOOKCASE IN FRONT OF THE FRIGGIN’ DOOR?!!!

That’s right, it happened to me the other day. Great build, but someone placed a bookcase in the hallway in front of the front door and more of that nonsense. I was very patient that day. Very.

@CAPTAIN_NXR7 I just battled myself about using bookcase to block entrance other day cause i wanted secret room in library but the bookcase doors we have are so small 😂
decided to conceal other way though and have no door for now I still hope we get better secret doors eventually

    - anything that is placed non functional because of Moo. It's a very useful cheat and I like to use it but only as long as everything works. For example if my sims can't cook because 4 counters are filled with unnecessary decorations, then at least two need to emptied.

    - The clutter. Looks great for screenshots but awful for gameplay. I want my lots to play smoothly. I have no need for tons of clutter because it slows down the game. This can be excessive decoration inside or landscaping outside.
I'm so very thankful for all the wonderful builders. I'd be lost without them. But I do usually remove all the choices.

I am also very grateful for the beautiful creations on the gallery. I don't have the creativity or the time to build like that. Thank you to everyone who shares something on the gallery. No building suits 100% my needs. If I make changes to a lot, it is a lot I like so much that I want to use it. If a build doesn't appeal to me, I won't go through the trouble of optimising it to suit my game.

I second what everyone above has said about routing issues and builders not route-testing their builds, The number of times I’ve had to work out why I can’t listen to the radio, or get to the fridge, or whatever… and then basically rearrange the room to make those small but important things work!

But it’s a minor grievance. I too am also *so grateful* for builders sharing their beautiful builds with everyone so that I don’t have to waste hours trying to attempt something myself. The time spent trying to fix a MOO issue is minimal compared with that.

I'm a builder myself, but even so the gallery is a big part of my game and enriches my stories. :) I regularly browse the gallery mostly for community lots like Restaurants, Spas, Cafes, Parks ect. and also unusual builds like castles or whole towns. There are unbelievably creative and talented builders in the Sims Community.

Sure, sometimes there may be routing issues or problems with accessing a room or furniture because of the breathtaking aesthetics, but that doesn't bother me much. Most of the time I just have to slightly move (or delete) a piece of furniture and the problem is fixed. Or if there are custom made stairs then I'll just teleport my Sims to the next level, thats it.

I always play with walls up so I almost never delete any decorations, because I LOVE the feel of it. (I myself am a fan of clutter and columns).

What I do adjust is too bright lighting. Sometimes there are so many lights that the Sims look very pale or yellow, so I delete some lights, until the Sims look normal again.

And when my game is laggy due to excessive use of many plants or objects on top of each other, I try to delete some of these but still keep the overall aesthetic of the build.

I love the gallery! And I hope that the corrupted For Rent builds in the gallery can somehow get fixed so I can use the gallery again without the risk of damaging my game.

Might also delete pillars/columns and ivy if it stays up when walls are half down. Also excessive clutter and clipping items. But really the saucer lights MUST go. I too love gallery and the creators even if not all things work for my taste :)

I would love more hidden book case doors! The ones in game are ok, but not deep enough. They immediately give away the secret, so what the point? I still use them a lot though.
I’d like them to function the way the secret bookcase does in TS3 - it came with Supernatural if I’m not mistaken- it has a proper book pull mechanism and the way it opens is completely different compared to ordinary doors. And the sound, man, the sound.

Clutter on counters and tables that prevent them from being used.

Expensive plants and paintings that increase the bills.

Bunk beds and Murphy beds because it takes too long to get sims in and out of bed.

Besides that, a lot of people don't realize that you can change the tone and intensity of lighting. They'll put a dozen saucer lights in one room to brighten it up, when often what they really need to do is change the tone of the lighting to soft white. But, to be fair, it's not easy to do lighting well. It's taken me a few years to be really satisfied with how I do lighting.

Landscaping and clutter. Not just to ease on loading times, but many builds seem to have been made with distinct personalities in mind that don't match my sims.

As for the saucer lights, I'm guilty of putting too many myself. I do change them to soft white first thing after moving in, but it's still not enough. I'm only satisfied when my sims' rooms are so bright that I'd have to wear sunglasses if I entered them.

I usually redecorate the interiors of builds I download, anyway, so they rarely look the same after I get them. That’s mostly to personalize them for my sims. Even when I keep most of the interior, I do I have to declutter. Since I don’t have all of the packs, a lot of decor gets replaced with bunny statues, bath mats, sunflower paintings, that one couch, and the weird bolt thing on the wall. Those all go bye bye. I have had to delete whole builds that I loved, though, because they just weren’t playable. That’s a shame, really.

Having said that, I can’t build worth diddly-squat, so I greatly appreciate our builders who share their work.

That's how I was when I used to use houses from the gallery as well - builders would use a lot of furniture from packs I didnt have and it would be replaced by stuff that was not so great, and also I would always completely redecorate anyway in all but a couple of cases. I don't think that there should be any shame thrown upon builders because 1. they may not be doing the things that people dislike, and 2. it's all a matter of taste, and 3. it's super easy and fun to redecorate anyway. Especially if you are a builder, why are you even mad about it? Isn't that something that you do purposely for fun anyway? You know?
