I usually make a basement, but this new save file I didn't. When my Sims family gets bigger I might have too, since I'm already running out of space lol
One of my sims got a tiny sample from a plant. To examine this sample a microscope in size of a truck is needed No thank you, I won't build a basement just for that. (Slightly off topic).
I always have basements, unless my sims live on a beach lot. Some times I have a home gym down there, or a study room. But, more often than not I have a basement for storing collectibles and paintings/prints. My sims usually don't have access to the collectible room, because they will spend all their time looking at frogs.
This is a young family and I am starting to cozy up their home as they make more money.
They really don't need the basement for much now, but I do have the laundry room going.
Sofia does need to do her yoga down here as the weather is starting to be iffy for doing yoga outside.
More activities will be added down here as the family grows.
Quite often I do build a basement. If it fits the house's age and style, I will. And if I'm making a house like a bungalow it's handy to have the ability to make more space without making the house itself bigger.
I only rarely make basements -- mostly if I'm pressed for space and need room for skilling/crafts equipment, or if it suits the character/story I'm playing. For instance, I had one Sim who was a prepper, so he had a basement with storage racks and stuff like a woodworking table. It was also his 'storm shelter'. I played another sim as agoraphobic, so he preferred hanging out in his basement. Another of my Sims, a villainous vampire, had a very normal 1950s house up top and then his basement was his actual living quarters, along with ....let's say 'accommodations for blood donors'.
I'd say less than 10% of my residential builds have a basement. Mostly I add them for story telling. In the early days I often added attics for storing the family's seasonal deco etc, but the inventory is more convenient
Nowadays I add basements to more and more community lots. Because some worlds (*lookingatyousanmyshuno*) comes with way too few community lots, so with basement levels I can add lots more services. I even have underground court house, parliament building and lots more LOL.
Almost always unless there is no place to put the connecting stairs in a premade house. First thing in is the private gym with mini bathroom. Other items depend on house size and story direction.
Well, yeah. Where am I going to put the coffins? In the master bedroom for just any sim to find?
No, they are in the basement behind a locked door. What's in there, you ask Mr. I'm-For-Dinner? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. Now go back up to the drawing room all by yourself and wait for me there.

Alice in Wonderland
Doctor Who’s TADIS
Skywalker’s Desert Home
Bunker Dome
Wonderland needed to be an underground magical place.😍
The TARDIS so had to be bigger on the inside.😛
Skywalker’s home had to be below the desert sand.🤖
Bunker Dome home really had to be underground for some of the survivors in the year 2525 to live in.🙀
If anyone wants to check out my builds they are all saved in the Gallery under my username name SEREFRAS if anyone’s interested.😉
