Do you have a favorite artist/genre to listen to while simming?

Is there a particular artist or song that really captures the essence of your favorite sim or sim couple? It can be sweet and romantic, it can be warped and twisted (within forum rules though), or it can be totally random. It could even be no music at all.

I listen to all kinds of music when I'm in the game or writing a chapter of either one of my SimLit stories. I was in the save with the couple in my profile picture and Sade's No Ordinary Love came up in the rotation, and I thought, how fitting for them. That got me wondering how much of a role music plays in anyone else's simming?

I very often have my sims listening to (or playing) music ingame.

Except when I'm in build mode. Then I'm listening to either a favorite band on Spotify, or the WQXR online stream, because I got tired of all the build mode music long ago!

I do have a lot of fun seeing how other people include RL music into their stories, including yours :)

No music when I'm playing the game. I'd rather hear the game. I like to put on headphones and really immerse myself so I can hear all the small sounds. You can hear the sound of feet on a yoga mat or even the light breeze during a cold morning jog. It's the little details that I enjoy.

If I'm building then I have BB music muted and I will instead listen to podcasts. Sometimes I pull up a stream on my second monitor.

@mightysprite About three songs after I posted that one from Sade, Danielle and Londyn's couples song came up, John Legend's All Of Me. When I'm in Under The Tartosan Sun I usually have something slow and deeply romantic playing. Sade, Usher, John Legend, Ed Sheeran, etc. When I'm in Schemes & Dreams I've got R&B and Hip Hop playing. If Schemes & Dreams had an official artist it would be Lizzo. When I'm building it could be anybody.

No music for me. Other than what's playing on my sims' stereos. I also use headphones to catch all the in game sounds.

    when playing its usually

    1. in game music I think the particular sim might like or that i associate with them

for example Goths often listen to jazz or retro channel for ts1-2 vibe

spop was pretty much always playing for watsons since it was in their likes

    2. channel that goes with world

    =
    strange tunes in strangerville
    japanese folk in komorebi
    cottagecore in henford
spooky in moonwood and forgotten hollow

    so forth

    3. seasonal

Summer strut, Blues,Island for the summer
Winter holiday, Metal, for the winter
Spooky, Japanese folk for the autumn
    Romance, Cottagecore for the spring

well other channels too but those hit my forgetful brain first

    4. actual instruments if my sims play them or are filthy rich enough to hire someone I love hearing the piano concert on the background

I don't really play music while i write unless it relates closely since i can get oh so distracted

and when building i often just hear whatever is on radio or tv or then i have the in game music as i pretend i am going to go and play later but the truth is i will not finish the build in next 10 hours

this is often weird because i can just look at build and suddenly be reminded of random news i heard while building and sometimes it totally ruins the build for me cause i just keep thinking about some awful news when i am there

like for instance i was trying to start this one build in sulani when tv was blabbering about sexual abuse stuff and luckily i had to bulldoze that anyway cause it was giving all the awful vibes to my brain even when it was just normal house

similarily though there was some movie about romantic painters on tv when i was building dreamer house which i thought was funny coincidence

I don’t listen to outside music while playing. I also don’t play movies or anything in the background either. I just focus on the game.

It depends on my mood. My default is to listen to a TS1/TS2/SimCity 3000 playlist, but otherwise I listen to what I'm in the mood for. Sometimes that's citypop, sometimes it's big band standards. (I have listened to Carribean music when playing Sulani, though.)

Most of the time I just like listening to the game sounds because I feel more immersed in the game. Occasionally I will put Classic FM on and have that playing quietly in the background. I have it on at the moment whilst I am spending some time in CAS but I think I will go back to game sounds once I'm done in there.

Great answers from everyone! I always knew I was a bit different for having music from outside the game going at the same time. I do hear some sounds from my game while I'm listening to my music. I have the master volume, voices, and sound effects maxed, while I have the others muted. I use the volume controls on my keyboard to control the volume for the game and I use the volume controls in my music apps to set those and then balance the whole mess so I can listen to both. I would love it if my sims and I could listen to the same music at the same time, but custom music, in my game at least, doesn't work.

As the vast majority of my Sims 4 gaming is my 1960s world I, naturally, listen to 90s grunge rock.

Only joking. I listen to 60s radio stations or YouTube playlists whilst playing. Sometimes I listen to stock library music or the Sims 1 soundtrack because I really like it. Of the Sims 4 songs my favourite is Cheer Up And Free Your Mind by Jenny O...the Simlish version.

I also use headphones to catch all the in game sounds.

Same  When I'm playing, I love hearing all the great sounds in the game.
I very often have my sims listening to (or playing) music ingame.

Same  I like many of the in game music genres - radio stations, and when the sims are talented in playing music, it sounds great. Many of my sims are music lovers as I am IRL (even if some of my sims don't have the trait, they still often listen to music for fun and for relaxing).

~ When I'm in Build Mode, I like to listen music from the radio or MP3 (Yep, that old type of device, which is still great) or from Youtube. I have very broad musical taste, so I listen many different genres and bands and artists

When I'm playing, I just listen to the game. I like to hear everything, down to the birds chirping in the background. When I'm building, I have an iTunes playlist with all the Sims music in it that I listen to. Sims 1-4 PC, Console, and DS; Sims Online, Bustin' Out, Urbz, even MySims, anything I could get my hands on.

I use in game audio always and usually turn the radio on. Traditionally I’ve used Pop, SPop and Singer Songwriter.

But now I’m playing sims in packs, I had my cottage living sim always play cottagecore and my strangerville sim plays strange tunes.

I actually really liked cottagecore a lot... strange tunes not so much, but it does go with the world 😂

    No.

On the contrary, I have Mxmtoon and Anitta in my game.

Edit: Mxmtoon lives in Willow Creek.

    Anitta lives in Sulani.

In game only, though if my sims have a stereo they usually listen to Summer Strut or something.

In Sims2 I used to listening to U2's album: How to dismantle an atomic bomb, when I was in the buildmode. That album fitted very well to my mood when building at this time. Today I hear either no music or my favorite music style of the month.

While I'm actually playing the game, I don't listen to anything but the game sounds. I like to hear everything going on. I don't even turn the radios on in game.

Sometimes when I build, I listen to music though. It really depends on my mood or what I'm feeling and has less to do with what I'm doing in-game. I typically gravitate toward Blue October because they're my favorite band.

I take spells where I don't listen to any music for months on end, and then I will obsess over it for a while.

Sometimes I prefer total silence. I have kids though, so I really like silence. 😁

Playing the game I do not play outside music. But when I sort through my screenshots, update my chronicle or blog, then I often have Shanties playing in the background (Fishermen's friends, Stan Rogers and YT playlists compiled by Cpt. Halyard). It started when I was playing my Captain Ahab challenge and the cottagecore save and somehow the habit stuck.

As for my main couple, yes, they have a song! Three, actually, all taken from the musical If-Then:
"What the F*", "Best worst mistake" and "You don't need to love me" always make me think of their early days getting together.

I have all the game sounds and music switched off all the time (unless I'm making a new Sim and need to hear their voice as I choose it) because I don't like hearing any game sounds and I'm constantly listening to music. Nothing in particular, nothing to go with the game, just any of my playlists or songs I'm addicted to currently.

It depends on my mood. Sometimes I'm all focused on the game and nothing else. Other times I'll put on an 80s or 90s playlist and jam. Occasionally, I'll watch others play sims or listen to podcasts. Lately, I've gotten into the more mellow lofi vibe when I want to just unwind from a long day.
