The house is quiet, besides the dogs, I have it all to myself. I've got Christmas music playing gently in the background, so I turned up my external speakers to better hear my game. A little kid was standing outside of Erik's gate, so I decided he would give her his autograph. She screams so loudly as he was busy signing the photo I nearly got startled out of my desk chair! Didn't see that one coming. I swear the speakers aren't up that high. It was just so very unexpected.
So, what sort of thing happened in your game that startled you or nearly knocked you out of your chair?
Ha! Hm... I can't recall details that made me jump... but I remember when the game was new I would often turn down sound when I knew Grim would pop up somewhere. It was not that scary actually, but I think he once made his sudden appearance right before my p.o.w. which was kind of unpleasant back then
The first time my sim was struck by lightning nearly caused me to fa out of my chair because I had really good headphones on and great sound quality, and that lightning strike was like it struck ME.
It was so realistic, sounded just like the time lightning struck the neighbor's tree and that stuff will jump you out of bed onto the floor.
For me the first time I had a scare jump while playing sims was in sims 3. I was playing with headphones on and my sim was a Firewoman and there was an earthquake she had to go tend too, when the earthquake happened I literally jumped as the screen was shaking and it sounded like a freight train right in my living room
I have lived through so very many Earthquakes, I thought I would never be frightened by them again. However, I have lived in another state for nearly sixteen years, now. About three years ago, we experienced our first one after so many years. I was on the phone with my daughter, who also felt it. I have to say it got me then, too.
The first time the game startled me, however was back in Sims2. I hadn't yet experienced a ghost of any kind. This happened to be the late afternoon RL on Halloween. I was alone in the house, with just our dog. The sun was slowly setting when I moved my Sim family into an existing lot. I had no clue there was a ghost, but the music came up and it freaked me out a little. LOL I'm uncertain if it was the lighting, the fact it was Halloween, or what. But, it's a memory that will last.
I don’t think anything has really ever shocked me as much in a sims game as when we had burglars in the other sims games.
I guess I would say the most shock I have had in the sims 4 is the first time a vampire came into an apartment and fed on a sim, and the time a vampire came into a club, and my sims couldn’t leave. The lightning striking my sim also shocked me, as did a sim slapping my sim. When my sim was slapped, it took me a bit to figure out why. He had taken his wife to the movies and they had just kissed when a female sim came up and slapped him. It so happens he had a bit of a love bar with the sim that slapped him. Since I play rotationally, it had happened while I wasn’t playing that household.
Oh it has happened to me once. With a broken mouse I moved the camera by holding down the right button. At one point, the computer registered that the right button was released then immediately pressed and released again, causing the camera to suddenly jump to the other part of the neighborhood, startling me.
Still, there's nothing more that startles me the most than meteors and krakens in The Sims 3.
This probably won't be as bad as jumping out of my chair, but got a big startle when I was watching my sim garden and a tree popped right up in the middle of my camera. I guess I did jump.
In my house, dog hair sticks to everything but the dog.
I was busy 'fixing' some small portions of the house I built for Erik and his family. There were a couple of roof lines that needed resizing. At one moment, the large tree seemed to be moving toward me (4th screen wall) of its own accord. I hit escape. Don't even know how I grabbed the tree. You know you're alive when your pulse starts pumping. LOL
My sim self's aunt owns a coffee shop/restaurant in Magnolia Prominade. Just now i saw her there while i was playing as my sim self's wife cleaning up dirty plates before sitting down to have a meal there with her husband and one of her sons!
First jump? Definitely the burglars in Sims 2. Those sounds, the idea of someone coming and taking my stuff that was EXPENSIVE or NECESSARY, and Grim’s intro always scared me.
The latest jump? Not really a jump but I was genuinely appalled by the horrible karaoke and physically shook my head in disgust before exiting the venue to escape.

Was it an old woman with a pill-box hat, wearing a gray jacket and skirt? If so, you've just experienced Mrs. Crumplebottom. She is the self-appointed PDA cop. What a hoot she is, too. She got my Rock Star's older brother the evening prior to her tangling with my Rock Star the very next morning. I think she has it out for the Cantrell boys. LOL
I mainly play with my sound muted, but when I'm trying to set up something in game that requires sound and I hear the above, it sometimes makes me jump.
Sims 4 Family: Benjamin, Shine, Princess Roddy, Sophia and Hamish Furystrykar and Shelly Heart. Princess Roddy is my avatar, and he's a boy!
First one for me was the computer prank sound clip in sims 3. Just put my head phones on and I hear that noise and about slid my own chair from underneath myself. xD

No, it was several years before Cottage Living came out. It was just a sim he had developed a pink bar with while I was rotationally playing another household. But it made me research what could have happened to cause this……. It was kissing his wife when the other sim was around. It made me laugh when I realized why it happened.
The lightning startles me every time. It doesn't even have to strike my sim, as long as it's close, I'll jump. I have a livelong fear of thunderstorms in RL, so I guess it transferred over to the Sims too haha.
I hear you there @FatTribble23 I've seen my Sims struck by lightning, even my poor Rock Star. They did a great job with the Thunderstorms, so realistic. I now live where summer thunderstorms are frequent. Sometimes, dry thunderstorms, too. Those are weird. The sound makes me jump, too.
From the High School Pack, every Friday when the sports start the music is so loud it makes me jump every time. You think I would get used to it but no I still jump.

So funny! This is exactly what I wanted to say - word for word.

Me, too, come to think of it. It's pretty jarring.
