Overlook Bay - WIP [Updated Aug 31, 2010 - BETA testing resumed!]

5l8eti.jpg

Welcome to the official Overlook Bay thread.

This is where I will be continuing to update the progress I am making with this world. Overlook Bay is a beautiful town set between the mountains and the beaches and will offer much diversity in scenery. From the tropical beach areas, the city-like downtown, farming community, suburbia and winding roads up treacherous mountains. The town got it's name from it's most spectacular place... The Overlook! Located at one of the highest peaks of the mountains, The Overlook offers a stunning view of the city below, all across the river and the beaches. At sunset the view is spoken of in all corners of the world.

See some select pictures of the world as it's coming together below. I will update these every few days...

TEASER PICS (STORY MODE FAMILIES)

Updated: Sep 4, 2010

kdvr6x.jpg
I'll start you off with the Mayor of Overlook Bay. Ralph Aldredge and his family. He's got a wife and two kids, and living with the Aldredge family is Marcus Carmichael - their bodyguard.

281aefd.jpg
Meet the Gruber's! I created them specifically for life in Overlook Bay's trailer park. Genuine "trailer trash" couple, and I personally really like them a lot.

156ra4m.jpg
The Hildebrand's. Wealthiest family in all of town. Founders of Hildebrand & Son Trading Corp. (Business towers), they are swimming in cash and they got the snobby attitude to go with it. This is Robert Jr. and his family - and next door lives his father Robert Sr. with wife.

21oplah.jpg
The Rensi family was created a while back, and what I wanted to do here was to create a family with very diverse ethnical backgrounds. Efrem Rensi, head of the family, is a world renowned surgeon, while his asian wife, Jialing, is a fitness specialist. The kids are all adopted... giving us a wide ethnic variety.

10qki6s.jpg
One of my personal favorites - Crazy Train! Crazy Train is the name of a rock band. The skinny dude is their number 1 fan, Jimmy Rothenberg, and he's happy to house the rock'n'rollers in his house... what he didn't know, though, is that their constant partying and loud music would make his life hell.

2q84rqe.jpg
Here are the Rogaways, a family I created specifically for the suburban Elm Lane area. They are your typical suburban family - friendly and pleasant to be around... however - there seems to be something wrong with their youngest son.

j81l77.jpg
General Tim Schlichter and his much younger "trophy wife", Fiona. It seemed a great idea to have a young pretty wife, but he certainly never wanted her to go and get pregnant... Tim hates kids! If the kid had at least been a boy, he could have tought him to be a great soldier some day... but it's a baby girl!

5xncqs.jpg
Surfer Girls. With all the available beach in Overlook Bay, I had to create some beach bunnies. I wasn't going to use any CC anywhere, but as you can see the Surfer Girls hair and parts of their clothing will be using it. You will be able to download all families for Overlook Bay in my Studio, so you can see what's been used from the store on some of them.

w6p7hh.jpg
The Rundle's were inspired from World Adventures expansion pack. Representing that I wanted a couple of travellers. I opted for the Tourist look on them, and I do enjoy their matching clothes. John is more into fishing and photographing on their travels, while May just likes to relax on the beach, or by the hotel pool.

2vxrp7k.jpg
And, finally, I give you the Delplanque family. This is the Overlook Bay maffia... if the maffia were French. They control all criminal activity in the town, so you'll be seeing those guys if you aspire to become a thug. Grandma Delplanque is the head of the family since the passing of Grandpa. Jean-Pierre (holding the toddler) will be the successor, while his younger brother Pascal is a bit hot-headed and careless.
PS. This picture not taken in Overlook Bay. I really liked the composition of the family members in this picture and figured I couldn't set them up this nicely again... Grandma Delplanque really looks menacing somehow in this one...

UPDATE AUG 31, 2010

RELEASE DELAYED!!!

I'm sorry to say that some issues have come up during BETA testing of Overlook Bay that forces me to delay my planned release of town. Apparently some CC come with some of the lots in town (despite explicitly stating in rules that no CC was allowed), and it installs with the town. It also appears that among this Custom Content there is a bugged file, which is causing the game to crash more than usual (which might explain the problems I've suffered the whole time I've been building).

This is not something I want to release to the public, and because of that I am forced to clear all lots from the CAW version, and then save that one empty so no CC can possibly be saved with it. Then I'll have to re-add every single lot into town, as well as redo all the families for Story Save.

This will take me at least a week, I presume, and then I'll want to send the new files out to the BETA testers so that they can confirm that the crashing issues have been solved.

I'm sorry about the delay - but it's for the good of us all!

UPDATE AUG 28, 2010

BREAKING NEWS!!!

I am looking for two or three BETA testers for this world! Hopefully I'll be able to send a copy to the selected few tomorrow. If you want to be a BETA tester, just send me an e-mail at the address below.

Note: I will prioritize those who have contributed to building Overlook Bay. The more they've built, the higher their priority. I already know that happyjme and startspring both expressed their willingness to beta test, so they are top of my list. Please do send me an e-mail, so I can send you guys a link to the BETA without displaying it all over the forums :)

UPDATE AUG 10, 2010

I am BACK!

First of all - I would like to express my sincere apologies to everyone who had been a part of this project all those months ago. I certainly never intented to leave you all hanging like that and just up and disappear on you. Your contribution has been invaluable to me, and I cannot tell you all how much it meant to me. All you builder's need a solid pat on the back.

And, to all of you other guys who were just hoping to play this town some day... I can only hope this will be worth the wait. I appreciate all your positive comments, and I see there has been some interest since I left.

Well, just to explain myself - I was so infuriated, frustrated and downhearted with all the problems that occured that I abandoned the Sims all together. I've spent the last few months doing other things - haven't even loaded up the game once. Then about a week ago I heard of the Night Life expansion pack, and thought this is what the game was always missing. I starting thinking about Overlook Bay, and how it would be great if I could save that town somehow and get back to playing... eventually.

So, after some time to re-adjust to the game of the Sims, and reading up on some of the news, I saw that there was a new version of CAW... and someone saying it had been "fixed". I started to become hopeful, and loaded up my old saves of the town to see where I could start off again.

And for two days now, I have been able to restore everything I had and even added a few more lots in CAW. It is still messing with me, but I am hopeful I will be able to complete this town after all. The new version of CAW even fixed an issue I was prepared to live with - and that was a huge tear in the ocean that I couldn't get rid of... well, once I loaded up the town in EIG the tear just disappeared and hasn't been seen since.

There are still some more lots needed to make the town complete - so if anyone out there wants to contribute, or maybe even already built some stuff in the Build Template that they would like to be included in the official release of Overlook Bay, just post here or in the Build Thread.

I don't want to make any promises... but I am back in business for a while anyway, and I sure hope this will be the time when Overlook Bay is finally completed.

I thank you all for your support!

UPDATE FEB 6, 2010

I am pleased to announce that Overlook Bay (Base World) is now completed and locked down. It's been a long journey... and I was just now sitting there looking at my world when it really hit home. This place was nothing but a green blob on water when I started. Looking at it now I just realized how much work has gone into creating it. Every inch of that huge map has really undergone a pixelized version of a facelift, and I must say that I am very pleased with the end result.

The last thing on my ToDo list in CAW, until I start adding all the confirmed lots, was to add the Spawners. That alone took me ALL day today - and there are well over 100 spawn points in the town for you collectors/gardeners/fisher(wo)men. There should always be something interesting around the corner, but you will probably find yourself searching high and low before you can locate the more obscure things in game... or if you're lucky - you'll just stumble by one right away.

This does, however, not mean that it is almost done. With over 160 lots to be built, there is still plenty of work left before I can release this world to you all (and finally start playing it myself). I am quite relieved, at the moment, to know that I can now comfortably start building the lots I have assigned myself.

One step closer to completion!

UPDATE JAN 25, 2010

BUILD TEMPLATE for Overlook Bay finally released!!!

After a lot of hard work compiling the lists and trying to iron out the majority of major issues in the town, I have settled on a Build Template version for upload.

Now is your chance to start building great houses for this, hopefully, great town. The build version is a far from complete town set-up, and I will still be adding a lot of things to the world in CAW, but all basic landscaping, sculpting, roads and lots are now final. There will be no changes to that.

Please report any errors you find in this thread, as I am continuing to work on making this town as perfect and as good as a Maxis town (or better, is what I aim towards). I will maintain a "Known Issues" list at the end of this OP for you to check on before you report any findings to me.

I hope you will enjoy building lots on my world. Try not to explore too much, or you'll have nothing fun left when the full town is release ;)

The lot list and all builder's related stuff should go in the new thread I started in the Creative Corner. Here is the link:
http://forum.thesims3.com/jforum/posts/list/164811.page

UPDATE JAN 23, 2010

Replaced Overlook Bay Map Picture with updated one, as well as added seperate map for the downtown area. These maps contain the street names used for the lots, and is a good place to look for those who want to help me build lots for this world, and to decide where they would be interested in building a house or community lot.

I also counted out the lots seperately for Community and Residential which I hadn't been bothered to do until now. Info updated to reflect this.

It looks like I'll be all set to upload the Build Template for you builders on Monday!

UPDATE JAN 22, 2010

Changing things up in the OP today, as I'm happy to announce that I have finished the decorating of the world today! Now, all that needs to be done is to go through all roads and lots to see if I can't get rid of all the tearing issues. After that I will be uploaded a BUILD TEMPLATE version of this town, and announce the list of available lots to build for those interested. Hopefully I'll get a lot of offers, so that the town can be completed relatively soon. I'm just dying to start playing my game in Overlook Bay.

I've removed the lots list I used to have on this page, as I will be posting a new one either here or in the Creative Corner forum where more exclusive builders would see the offer and hopefully help build some lots. A link to that post would then be offered from here, as this will remain the official forum thread for anything to do with Overlook Bay.

Also want to express my gratitude to those who have been following the progress and left many encouraging and inspiring messages for me.

THE TO DO LIST

(Follow the progress until release day)

DONE!1. Downtown Area. Add world objects, terrain paint and flora as necessary throughout the inner city.

DONE!2. Hill Area. Add world objects, terrain paint and flora as necessary throughout the Hills areas. This stretches from behind the apartments, up to the mountains and out all the way to where the graveyard was supposed to be (it will move further up and right from the map picture below). This may also introduce a suburbia type road with identical housing that does not yet exist. I just think it may look nice if I can squeeze it in there.

DONE!3. Dark Forest Area. Add world objects, terrain paint and flora as necessary throughout the dark forest area. This area will stretch from a ways north of the farm area and up to the mountains. Within this forest will be the church and graveyard. So this step also includes remaking some roads and lots.

DONE!4. Mountain Area (A). Add world objects, terrain paint and flora as necessary to the mountain area. This will be a lot of work, so I'm dividing the mountain up for two days work. Area A will be the eastern half, to just before Camp Overlook.

DONE!5. Mountain Area (B). Add world objects, terrain paint and flora as necessary to the mountain area. Now, as the final part of the map to be painted I will work on the Overlook area and the unreachable mountain range beyond it. This includes creating several walking paths and interesting places to explore on your way up to the top.

DONE!6. Roads and Lots remake. Those darn lot and road tearings. I'll have to go through them all with a keen eye and see if I can eliminate any problems. This probably means redrawing just about every lot in town, and smooth all roads before replacing the lots. This will not be fun... but necessary (I think). During this phase (which may take me two days), I'll also go through the lots and set the Beautiful Vista buff, Lot Values and (of course) street adresses.

DONE!7. Compile Lot List. Probably as I work on the above segment. This is the time to completely write down every single lot and what I envision should be on that space. This is the list that I will then post to this forum and elsewhere so that builders can help me out (no way I can build 140+ lots on my own). Rules and instructions for would-be builders will also be written and published.

DONE!8. Upload Build Template version of world. This will be the version that you guys can download to build the lots where they will end up in the final release. This way everyone can do their best to make sure that the buildings fit nicely with the rest of the environment.

DONE!9. Add Road Objects and Spawners. As the world is finally out there for people to start building lots on, I will take the time to add all road signs, and Spawners to the world, which (for the most part) I'm ignoring right now.

10. Build LOTS of Lots. Build as much as I can, and what others do not claim from the list of lots. All rabbit holes, for example, will be created by me.

11. Collect and Place Lots. As lots are submitted, and my own completed (some I already have, but may change a bit of flora to fit better in Overlook Bay as I created them for Sunset Valley), it is time to finally start placing them on lots in EIG.

12. Test EVERYTHING. Time to test the heck out of this thing to make sure there are no serious issues. Make necessary finetuning to make the world sparkle.

13. Create Families. Create and add families into town for the Save-Game file that I will offer so you don't have to populate the town yourself or with ugly random-generated Sims. Each family will have a bit of story if you want to play either of them.

14. Offer for Download. The moment we're all waiting for. Call this project DONE and offer it for download to the whole world (while I retire to start playing a little of the game myself... unless I start this other world idea I can't seem to get out of my head).

Let me give you some background to how my town "came to be".

My first idea was to have a mountain overlook point, from which you could view the sunset and the city below - I just imagined that would be very nice indeed (and a perfect place for romancing the Sims). I also wanted the place to remind me of Florida, where I used to live - so because of that I grabbed a piece of map of the space coast area with the Indian River and used that as the beach side. There are other areas of this map that are taken from real like places that mean something to me, so basically I did start out making this map for my own enjoyment.

I hope you guys like what you see so far. Any feedback or suggestions are welcome as you may come up with some neat ideas I would never have thought of myself.

KNOWN ISSUES:

This is where I will list all known issues with the world so I can go back and try to fix them. There are some road tears, especially on the beach side, which is the result of me trying a new method to clean them up that didn't work. I didn't want to go through them all for a fourth time before I released the build template though. Road tears, however, I believe I will be able to completely eliminate for the official release. Minor lot tears seems unavoidable, however... and, funny thing is I've noticed them in Maxis towns as well so it is a difficult thing to deal with...

Remaining Road Tears:
33 Palm St.
1030 Oceanview Dr.
East Side of Large Beach (1036 Oceanview Dr.)
1046 Oceanview Dr.
71 Pelikan St. (at the turn)
First turn when leaving downtown via Old Pier Rd.
Old Pier
40 Pitchfork Acres (Both front, and fence road between barn and fence)
Between 10 & 12 Interchange Dr.

Remaining Lot Tears:
40 Pitchfork Acres
50 Harper's Bend

Ocean Tear:
Out in the ocean some ways above the Water Towers

- 29 Northview Rd. Misspelled (29 Nortview)

Please notify me of any issues you come across in my town!

Very nice layout. Be careful on laying down the town hall and school when choosing Map Height: 300 . They will sink down

How do you mean; sink down? The school I have is already built, and I have it saved as a lot - the town hall I will probably build from scratch (or someone else). Do you mean that, in build mode, when placing the Rabbit Hole object it will sink into the ground?

Thanks guys - glad you like what you see so far. It'll be a while longer before the place will really start to come alive, after adding some flora and effects... as well as houses and community lots of course.
how did you make the planner map in the begining?

At first I just made the height map. Pieced together from real map parts and then tweaked to make them fit together. After that I simply loaded up CAW with just a basic layout in my head and started to build blindly. I made the above planning map just before I posted here as I found I didn't quite know what to do next, and came to the realization that I needed to plan the rest of it out before I continued...

...as if that helped any :) I find as I continue to edit that the dimensions aren't quite as planned in that pic, but at least I have a general idea of where I want to build next.

Not much has happened since the original post. I've finished the residential area by the inland river area, and the piers. The 64x64 lots that will be in the woods has been done, as well as the trailer park area. Next up will be the farms, graveyard and the mountainside road and housing - as well as the maps "highlight"; The Overlook.

I also wanted to do a little bit of the scenery, and so I did the Waterfall and the lake below it (still no flora in place though). Here is a picture of a Sim fishing in the lake by the brand new waterfall, taken as I exported it to give it a quick run to make sure everything works so far.

    690spe.jpg

On a sidenote. I've noticed that some of my streets get covered by grass in places. I'm guessing this is because I haven't clicked "smooth" on them just yet, but I'd still like to hear if anyone else has had problems with roads not staying above ground (forgot to take a pic of that as I intended).

The outline to this looks simply amazing. I wouldn't mind downloading this when you are done building it.

    I would also offer to build a house or two but my building abilities aren't too great. I can do just very simple things or destroy other houses to try and get mine to be perfect. ^^;;

    Good luck on it all!

I loove I mean loooove the layout!!! Finally believeable roads and down town set up.

I just had one question? Are you planning on keeping the grass on the Bay default or giving it some extra love by darkeing it up? I think it would make the whole place pop.

    Thanks.

About the texturing, I haven't done any work (except mark out the beaches) with that as of yet. I have finally settled on the basic road and lot layout of the map, so next I will begin the tedious (but fun) work of painting and decorating the world. Out towards the beaches it is likely that the lighter grass will be dominant, while it will darken the closer to the mountain we get.

    UPDATE:

I have updated the original post with a fresh Map View of the city as it stands. What you see is pretty much the finished setup of roads and lots (there will be a couple more lots for fishing spots added later).

I am up to 139 lots as of now, so this will prove to be a huge world to play in.

In the original post I have also listed the types of lots to be expected, as well as which ones I intend to build myself, and which ones are up for grabs for anyone who is interested in contributing to this project. The chosen ones to build lots will be announced when I get closer to the lot building part of my scheduled process.

And... for anyone interested... here is my current To Do List for Overlook Bay.

    1. Go over the map area by area and finetune landscape sculpture, paint and add trees and effects.

    2. Go through all roads and lots and make sure that roads are smoothened and lots are conformed and check in game that, indeed, there are no issues.

    3. Set up definite list of lots to be built and where, exactly, they go.

    4. Add ALL spawners to the world (except WA ones)

    5. Get all required lots (built by myself and others) and place them into the world.

    6. Finetune anything that needs improvement now that I see what the town looks like with houses...

    7. Export and load into game. Create Sim Families to move into the neighborhood and populate it with interesting characters.

    8. Offer both plain hood, and Save Game hood (with above Sim Families included) for download to the public.

    9. And, I'm really looking forward to this one... Start my game in Overlook Bay!

Thanks. That sounds good. I am hoping that, when the time comes, I can assign a builder to a certain street, or area, which should help the styles come together and make it fit nicely together. Keep your eyes on this thread, so you're ready when I announce the complete list of lots that I will be looking for.

Yes. I've planned this world to hopefully be compatible with any possible expansion pack (of course, I can't know what will come - but still). There are plenty of community lots downtown, and many will probably be "filler" lots for now, as we don't really have any use for all those lots. These lots should provide enough for any future expansion pack needs - including possible Nightlife for nightclubs, restaurants and others. For the Pets expansion... well, I'm even hoping this time around they will make the "Farm" EP with not only cats and dogs, but horses and other critters as well - hence, the three farms :)

I may squeeze in 5-6 large community lots extra as well, to be prepared for any possible future careers that may need large rabbit holes in the city.

I am really looking forward to helping out by building some stuff for this town. :-)

I haven't gotten an opportunity like this before where I could build stuff for other people and so this will be a first for me, but I shall say that with time I can definitely make very nice creations. :-)

btw, should builders build the houses in sunset valley and then upload them to the exchange so you can use them in your town?

The idea is that I will upload a template version of the town for the builders, so you can build the house onto the lot where it will be in the "official" release of the neighborhood. That way you can work with the environment to make the house really fit in.

Sounds good. There are a lot of houses that will be needed. Don't know yet about Sim families, and how I will create/offer those with the town.

This is not really a neighborhood with a "story", as it is merely a nice place to live and create your own stories. I'm striving for realism with this town...

    So this requires world adventures??

Sadly, yes (for those who don't have it. Main reason were the bridges that I simply needed for those rivers.

Ok - got some new pictures to show off the slow but steady progress of adding the flora to the neighborhood. I loaded it up in the game and placed the hospital and a couple more buildings that I already have planned for the town, so I could give a bit more life to the pictures than those previously shown.

View as you reach the end over the main bridge out toward the beaches:

The hospital (the science facility will also be visible behind it in the final version):

Thanks. I'm keeping it up best I can :) Wish I had more time, but it's coming along nicely.

Thanks. It is still in progress, and it will be at least another week before I am satisfied with the basic town layout and landscaping. After that, I need to place and build all 140+ lots. Once that is done there will be some extra fine tuning the environment to make sure everything is (near) perfect.

Time for another update, and I got some new teaser pictures ready for you. Exported the progress to have a look in-game and took some new shots of the newly finished areas.

Pretty much done the entire area on the beach side of the river, and halfway down the riverbank on the mainland. Downtown will be all asphalt as well, and I've started working on that as well.

Once done with that I will move inland and begin the transition from the current tropical scenery to a more forested environment as we get closer to the mountains.

Anyway... here are the latest pictures:

Teaser of the actual view from the Overlook Point area (You can see how high above the city she is):

Here is a bit of an overview of a completed area (minus the lots):

This will lead you down to the main beach:

    An out-of-place, rarely used beach:

And, where might this path lead?

And, finally... yet another nice little fishing spot:
