I tend to mostly play with premades. I then add favorite sims from past iterations and flesh out the family trees by adding parents and grandparents where it suits my stories. I really like the established stories backgrounds from ts2 so tend to fall back on those quite often. The only time I really create my own original sims is for challenges.
Over time, I've reached the point where I play almost exclusively with my own Sims. My daughter loves CAS, so there will never be a shortage of our creations to add to our worlds. We also have Sims we've downloaded from the Gallery and customized, so it's hard for us to remember which of our Sims are completely our own.
Now, we begin our saves in an "empty world," which contains houses and no Sims. We have fun populating it with the Sims in our Gallery. We use MCCC to generate townies, so the Sims we see wandering around, working as baristas, etc. are all familiar. Many of them have acquired their own lore, based on the stories they've created in different saves. I suppose you could say we have our own cast of "premades" now.
I always create and then get obsessive about doing townie makeovers.
I don't do that, in light of the fact that in Sims3, they were integrally attached to the game. Deleting them was said to mess things up. Now, I'm gun-shy, so to speak. I just leave them alone and pray they leave my Sims alone. LOL
I stopped creating sims 2 saves ago ! I pick and choose off the gallery among the skilled sims now. The reason for it is my 3rd save i started with a blank city, w only my created sims, but they didnt do much, it was pretty boring a bunch of level 0 sims.. so i had to reload the premades. And then i stared placing skilled sims around my sims because my sim had gone to level 10 on most skills so thats why i went all in on the skilled sims, they can do stuff ! And since more interactions are available, it makes for a more interesting autonomy, its really what it comes down to.
Now w regards to premades i found i was missing the Landgraabs after i deleted them so now im 50/50 on premades, its all just about filling up my neighbourhoods... so the premades are part of the decor now ! And for this current save i had so many of my super sims that sorta have the same style... so i dont makeover super sims anymore, i choose the ones im not gonna have to work on too much...
This latest save i started last month i kept most premades, im not gonna play them but in public places its nice to have familiar faces.
I used to make my own all the time because I like to design characters, but lately i took a break from CaS and I started to play with premades. I downloaded the “classic” Mortimer Goth from the gallery, edit him a bit, put him in Oasis Springs and made him scientist AS HE SHOULD. also, he’s dating Dina now. so i’m having fun. Next time i will make Bella a detective.
I usually play my own sims, because I love to create! But sometimes I play sims that my friends have created, because their sims are so cool! Then I let them know what their sim did in my game. It's so much fun for me and for my friends!

I prefer to play with sims I've made myself

First thing I do when I start a new save is evict all the townies and bulldoze all the things.
