I have not yet installed any of my mods. I updated on Thursday (August 4, 2022 .... after the "fix" patch was released).

Before I updated, I removed my entire "The Sims 4" folder out of my documents and placed it on my desktop and then let the game create a new folder.

I made a new test sim so I could get to the worlds (I'm in the process of creating a World Save Template so I've only been downloading lots, building or decorating).

I went into the game settings and turned Wants/Fears off yesterday.

I just tested, and they're back on again ..... so I can confirm this issue is not from mods or saves since I have neither in my TS4 folder.

I'm extremely disappointed in the lack of fears and wants for occults (and just the basic lack of overall pack integration), just to name a few off the top of my head (and based on some of what I can remember from TS2)

    Fear of Werewolves:
    - Fear of Greg (after being attacked/in a fight with him or being terrorised by him)
    - Fear of becoming a werewolf

    Want to become a Werewolf:
    - Want to socialise with werewolves
    - Want to travel to Moonwood Mill
    - Want to join a Pack
    - Want to join Moonwood Collective/Wild Fangs
    - Want to leave "XYZ" pack
    - Want to be a "lone wolf"
    - Want to gain werewolf level
    - Want to fight a vampire
    - Fear of hurting/scaring "someone/XYZ sim" while rampaging
    - Fear of cure
    - Fear of Full Moon/Rage
    - Fear of joining a pack
    - Fear of being a "lone wolf"
    - Fear of being kicked out of Wild Fangs/Moonwood Collective

    Fear of Vampires:
    - Fear of Vlad (after tutorial break in)
    - Fear of becoming a vampire

    Want to become a Vampire:
    - Want to socialise with vampires
    - Want to travel to Forgotten Hollow
    - Want to drink "someone's/XYZ sims" plasma
    - Want to become a Grand Master Vampire
    - Want to fight a werewolf
    - Fear of cure
    - Fear of Garlic
    - Fear of Sun (Though this is a perk in the vampire skill tree, still works as a fear)
    - Fear of Death by sun
    - Fear of Thirst

    Fear of Magic:
    - Fear of Spellcasters
    - Fear of becoming a Spellcaster
    - Fear of being cursed (Spellcaster only)
    - Fear of Potion mishap (Spellcasters only)

    Want to become a Spellcaster:
    - Want to socialise with Spellcasters
    - Want to travel to the Magic Realm
    - Cast a spell
    - Raise Spellcaster level
    - Brew a potion
    - Fear of Overcharge
    - Fear of Death by Overcharge

    Fear of Mermaids:
    - Fear of Shark attack
    - Fear of "Siren's Lullaby/song
    - Fear of becoming a Mermaid

    Want to become a Mermaid:
    - Want to travel to Sulani
    - Want to swim in deep ocean
    - Fear of cure

    Fear of Aliens:
    - Fear of abduction
    - Fear of Alien pregnancy (male sims only)
    - Fear of Alien Invasion (work event)
    - Fear of travel to Sixam (through portal or rocket)

Great list. I like how these fears are event specific. They have a clear action during which that fear will be realized. I think this way of doing Fears like in the Sims 2 is more intuitive…I don’t love the concept of Fears being traits that get added to your Sim. It’s not as dynamic

Thanks all that replied to say that you also have the issue with wants and fears turning themselves back on (even though the setting claims that they're off), as much as I don't want anyone else to have problems with their game, it is a relief that it isn't just me.
Found the bug report for this issue and hit "me too".

Yeah, so my married sim with the "Soulmate" aspiration (and maxed out green/pink bars) developed the "want" to flirt with a paparazzi who keeps showing up to pester his spouse and uh...NO! THAT IS NOT ALLOWED. We do ONE thing with the paparazzi, we feed them to our son (who is a vampire). We do not invite them in, we do not dance with them, and above all, WE DO NOT CHEAT WITH THEM, for pity's sake....

I could not figure out how to get rid of that want without encouraging this homewrecking behavior so I switched off wants/fears to purge it, then switched them back on. I generally try to merely guide my sims and not force them to do everything...but yuck...this is a household, not a pig-sty, for pity's sake!

@SuddenlyMangos would love that kind of drama! Great story material even if you don't fulfill the want.

I discovered to my horror they can only be turned off for the active household. For those of us who play rotation any unplayed household has wants and fears active regardless. After I discovered this I went through each household in my rotation and turned it off for them. I then went back to the household I started with, the one I wanted to play, and lo and behold wants and fears was back on. I went through the rotation all over again and every one was back on again. So my main save is going back into hibernation until this is fixed. Luckily nobody had any wants like cheating on their partner, no fears of dead jobs.

ETA: I've given this a bit more thought and I'm not sure if it's the act of leaving the household that turns wants and fears back on, or if it's the act of selecting that household that turns them back on. I don't know of a way to test it to see which it is, except to let it play out and see what happens while you're away. Then you're stuck with an outcome you may not want or tossing away progress to go back to a previous save point to get rid of any negatives. It comes down to how willing are you to risk a story that is following an arc you love.

Thanks! :) Had to cast my memory back to how they worked in TS2 and remembered that sims could get fears and wants surrounding occults, either fear of becoming one or others becoming one or fears of being cured or others being cured etc. Had a vampire sim of mine go loopy after her vampire husband and children (who were adults) all decided to cure themselves as part of a story I was telling at the time. It was kind of hilarious and sad at the same time.

But I agree, you can tell that TS2 was built around "wants and fears" from the start and that's why it felt dynamic and pack integration was tight. Even if you didn't own all of the packs, the game still felt tight and ran like clockwork...minus a few bugs and glitches at the time.
Fears being "traits" is pointless, especially given how frequent certain ones are. Like my sim is always getting "dead-end job" because it takes more than a few days to advance in their career (painter and chef respectively) if you're having them do nothing but eat sleep and do their tasks to prep for work. So a great deal of retuning needs to be done.

The above glitch and over-tuning is exactly why I didn't like the idea of wants and fears being put into the game, at this late stage. Because I knew it'd be a buggy mess, just like meteor strikes, Murphy bed malfunction, struck by lightning, sims getting water, sims hugging, musical chairs and all the other annoying things that happen at a far too great frequency that go from "ha ha that's kind of funny/charming" to "oml, not this again..." in like a heartbeat.
Makes one realise just how shallow TS4 really is, especially given it's a quickly retooled online multiplayer game. I'm surprised it can even run. xO

This Wants and Fears system is a bugged-up mess! I am doing a test save because I'm too afraid to play any of my other families. I can't keep W&F turned off. It switches back on every time I start the save or come out of CAS. This is a vanilla save. I've taken all my mods out while I try to find a way to keep W&F off.

Last night, I started my game and the welcome wagon (the engaged Markovic couple in Tartosa) was already knocking at my door. I hadn't yet turned W&F off again like I always have to do. I got distracted by these visitors. Cassidy, my sim, introduced herself and then the couple started flirting with each other--not flirting with my sim at all. Cassidy just met these two, but immediately weird fears popped up about Cassidy being cheated on. She doesn't have a partner, no love interests, no friends! And not only did the game claim she had a cheating partner, but it also got her chosen sexual orientation wrong.

Suddenly, this woman Cassidy barely knew was listed as a romantic interest with a red bar.

That's the kind of thing I'm not sure I'm ready to trust my faithfulness mod to stop. I use Chingyu's mod and it does prevent accidents with romantic socials. If a sim has pledged to be faithful then all romantic socials with any sim other than their partner is greyed out. So I can't make a mistake where I'm not controlling the sim I think. We've all made that mistake before. I feel like it's doing the same for autonomous socials as well but after this patch debacle, even with an updated mod how safe is it?

The other problem is wants related to things we have to tell them to do because they won't on their own. My novelist sim has wants for writing a book and publishing one. Perfectly normal wants for her considering her career. But since she won't do either on her own, what happens when I spend a few days with one of my other households? As it is I feel like if I play that save I need to check on everybody at least every other sim day, or everyday.

Alright no. I think I may have mentioned my Wants and Fears turn themselves back on?

It's different. Even *after* having turned them off my Sim will still come home from work with the exact same fear I was trying to disable 3 mintues ago in the same session. It wouldn't have been so bad if it feels like anyone who goes to work will automatically get it after a day without fail.

Yet the wants are gone for good. But its just fears randomly deciding to creep in whenever they feel like it.

    I agree with this.
I expect the system to still offer up wants that make no sense for my sims and run counter to what I am playing. I don't think it's possible for it to do it sensibly. What I can do is select the ones that do fit with what's going on with my sims and make sense to me. For that I need to cancel the ones that don't fit and lock in the ones that do.

The bug definitely occurs for me when I first load up my game and also every time I go into and then exit CAS. On occasion it has also happened when moving between lots or other worlds. It also happened on a couple of occasions when my sim got a promotion.

I was really excited about Wants and Fears when I heard about them. It ought to be perfect for my "story save," adding depth to our lead Sim's story by giving me prompts for things he would realistically want to do and bringing to mind things he would realistically be concerned about. I haven't touched my main save since the patches, because I'm too concerned about the havoc that will ensue. And, while I haven't spent years playing this save, like many of you have, I've still put lots of time into it. So has my daughter, who's my Simming pal. We'd hate to see it spoiled.

A few months ago, Z and I created our own Wants system. We made a set of tables that list things our Sim might want to do. We roll a 20-sided die and let it help him make up his mind.

Our system doesn't lead Cameron to flirt with random townies, endangering his new romance. It remains true to the sexual orientation we chose for him. It includes all the expansions we own, and is expandable when (if?) we add new ones. It's flexible, reflecting activities he learns to like and including other Sims he develops friendships and animosities with. It's been thoroughly play-tested, and it's almost completely free from glitches and bugs. The worst glitch occurred when I rolled the d20 off the table and our cat batted it through the dining room with her paws.

I wish EA had rolled out a system that works as well as ours does...

Can someone explain the "Fear of Unfulfilled Dreams" to me? My sim self's wife suddenly has this fear after discovering her new found sexuality!

I think it happens when a Sim hasn't had their wants fulfilled recently.

Ok so at first I thought the new fears and wants system would be good. I didn't like that I couldn't dismiss the wants but I decided to give it the benefit of the doubt and play with it on anyway.

Now I just think it's broken. My sim keeps getting the same two fears. Fear of their partner cheating on them which is silly because they currently have like 3 girlfriends. And fear of unfulfilled dreams, also silly because her aspirations are constantly being checked off because I'm attempting to complete all aspirations.

The fears keep giving negative moodlets which is annoying because they slow me down. So I finally gave up and turned them off. I checked the simology panel and the fear traits are gone. So I start playing again and the moodlets are still there, but because the traits are gone I can't deal with her fears so they're there for good now.

Repeated fears in mine "Fear of Unfulfilled Dreams" and "Fear of a Dead-End job". If I solve them, they'll reappear in 2 days max. If I cure them with a potion, they'll reappear in 2 days max. One fear will block solving the other one. Fear of a Dead-End job entirely froze my career progress bar. Getting rid of fears by switching them off in the settings does not last, even if the setting shows as them not being on, so I have to constantly retick it.

I don't know if this is from this update or not, but my child sim got "Fear of the Dark". Cute, except a) it will launch and be permanently on no matter how much light there actually is, so there's no way to keep them okay and b) if I solve it the fear icon won't come back, but they will randomly get the "scared" debuff, no matter it is day or night from that fear as if it still existed and once again, light has no influence on it. That sim is nearing adulthood now and despite fears being switched off that debuff keeps on returning.

My ghost sim got hydrophobia from drowning and this one is simply not effective - the happiness of being in the pool will always overwrite the fear of water, so the combination simply ends up being funny.

Does anyone know if Fear of Unfulfilled Dreams is affected by aspiration progress? or is it only affected by wants?
To me the aspirations are the higher level "life dreams" and the wants/whims are more situational.

As far as I know they are only affected by wants!

Getting rid of fears by switching them off in the settings does not last, even if the setting shows as them not being on, so I have to constantly retick it.

I've had this issue too. I discovered that if they get the negative moodlets but the traits aren't there I can cheat the traits on for them and then remove them with the potion but that's so frustrating. I shouldn't have to do that.

I just wanted fears to be the same as they were in TS2 where they got the fear and if it came true they'd feel bad. With some sims I purposefully made them and realized their fears because it was some entertaining drama.

I've switched off wants and fears. Just doesn't fit my style of gameplay. I feel obligated to fulfill them. So far they haven't returned.
