Why are the hobby leaders poor?

My techie sim just married who turned out to be a hobby enthusiast, a science one. His logic skill is maxed out. He was dressed like a mad scientist so I thought he had a job but nope! Unemployed. And to top it off, he only brought $1 into the household funds 😭 I married a bum...so weird. I thought all townies start with the same base pay of money.
The Sims has currently lost its identity. Bring it back for TS5

The Garden Club inspectors are also poor, iirc. They don't have any skills either.

I got into model trains shortly as a teenager. There's a reason all the other guys I knew who did it were railroad retirees with good railroad pensions.

I've only ever seen Tiffany, the old lady, have a Gold Gardening badge.
I've married in a few Hobby Icons and the best were the Arts & Crafts icons~ iirc they had each of the Craft badges. Not sure if they were gold or just bronze.
I would guess the Tinker/Nature hobby icon would have their badges.
