    Part 5...
Operation Homecoming. After the U.S. pulls out of Vietnam and soldiers return home, those captured during the war are released. Edward Damme, Richard Shelton, and Charles King all get to return home. Edward not knowing why their captures had departed the camp, sent his men to bed for the night. Later they were freed and Steven was among those who would help with their release and return.
    1973-Vietnam-POW1.png
    1973-Vietnam-POW2.png
Edward Damme had been captured early on. It was surprising he had lived, though he was nothing more than bones.
    1973-Vietnam-POW3-Edward.png
Richard SHelton had also been taken with Edward. He too was nothing but skin and bones.
    1973-Vietnam-POW4-Richard.png
Charles hadn't been a prisoner long. He did lose some weight but not as much as the others. He was captured within his first week of Vietnam. Charles was glad to see Edward was still alive and wished he could tell his family. He didn't leave Edward's side from the moment he arrived in the camp.
    1973-Vietnam-POW5-Charles.png
Steven knew he had family captured and wanted to be a part of finding them. He was a familiar face for Charles and one they were all happy to see.

Richard's Return. Richard was very happy to see his wife. He then went and visited his mother Mary spending as much time with the family as possible.
    1973-Richard-Returns1.png
    1973-Richard-Returns2.png
    1973-Richard-Returns3.png

He learned everything about the family he had missed. While he felt the sting of the war, probably worse than some as a POW, he could understand why his brother Michael ran off and why James went crazy. He then went to visit James and invited him to live with him along with his children in hopes that it will help heal both of them and what they had lost in this war.

    1973-Richard-James-Family.png

    Part 6...
Edward returned and first embraced his family. He had learned of his daughter's death and how Chiyo hadn't even seen their grandchild. He didn't know what to feel, sad and hurt or anger. He scolded Chiyo and told her that they will have their grandson in their lives and that Jude was welcome. Their relationship felt distant after and Edward didn't know how to be with her anymore. He was very proud of his son for taking care of her and checking in on Christopher at his Uncle Art's home.

    1973-edward-Returns2.png
    1973-edward-Returns3.png
    1973-Edwardinvites-Jude1.png

He sought out Jude making his apologies for his wife's behavior and offered Jude and Christopher their home. Jude was reluctant but he had to do what he thought was best for his son and he knew Sayuri would approve. So Jude and Christopher moved in. Edward had a separate home built next door so he could be close to them.

Jude let Chiyo know exactly how he felt. She could do nothing but tell him how sorry she was and try harder, better for the future.
    1973-Judeconfronts-Chiyo1.png
    1973-Judeconfronts-Chiyo2.png

Edward also visited most of the family paying his respects to everyone who had served and everyone who had lost their lives. He attended Michael Wellington's funeral.
Ernest and Sophia were inconsolable. James Wellington was so upset he left early and went home to grieve on his own. Helena had gone to check on him but he kept to himself and wanted to be left alone most of the time after losing his kid brother.

    1973-Michael-Wel-Funeral3.png

Part 7... The remainder of the year was birthdays and Births.
Twins Linda and Michael turn 30. Linda had to celebrate without her brother has he had dodged the draft and had to remain out of country.
    1973-Linda-Bertram30-Bday1.png

    Teresa Damme turns 18.

Frances turns 80 and has her Death Roll. This lucky lady gets to live another year. (In fact, I think I'll wait till she's 85 to have another DR).

And lastly, at the very end of the year, Matthew Wellington is born. James names him Matthew Michael Wellington.

I was so excited to get the day off of work so I could just actually play my game today. Debating to turn on story progression for my inactive families. What do you think, should I or shouldn't I?

    1976...

Didn't have much going on in 76' so I played a bit with the families. Their stories continue.

    Part 1... Sickness and Tragedy
Charles had been feeling quite depressed since getting back from the Vietnam War. While it wasn't known then he was suffering from PTSD. He couldn't understand why he was sad and angry all the time, why he would wake up from nightmares in cold sweats, why he just couldn't get back to the world he once knew. He had contracted an illness that took its toll on him and knew he might not have much time left with his family. He visited Deborah and apologized for his behavior. They spent the day together just hanging out and she showed him around the city. He told her not to be ashamed of herself or who she loves and to find peace with the wonderous women she is becoming. Deb could tell something was off, gave him a big hug, and told him he was going to ok.
    1976-harapologises1.png

    1976-harapologises3.png
    1976-harapologises4.png
    1976-harapologises5.png

A couple of weeks later the illness took his life. He had been in bed all day not feeling well but he heard his mother Delores coming and went to get up. He collapsed and died. Delores ran to him in panic. She could do nothing but scream for help while holding her son, brushing her hand across his face, crying.
    1976-Char-Sick-Dies1.png
    1976-Char-Sick-Dies2.png

There was not a dry eye at the funeral. Everyone tried to pay their respects to the family. But Deborah never came, she never showed up and Delores grew worried about her. She tried to find her but Penny hadn't known where she went. She called John over to help.

    1976-Char-Funeral3.png
    1976-Charfuneral4.png
    1976-Charfuneral5.png

    Part 2... Coming Out
John looked in on all of them. He found Deb but she didn't want to talk to him or anyone. John told Penny what was going on. John went back to Delores to let her know that Deb was ok but she is grieving hard and just needs time.

Things with Dean and Don had been getting a lot better since the girls, Patricia and Lisa Burns, moved in. Don had to do a celebrity event and wanted to embrace the new era, though still dangerous he wanted to tell the world about his love for Dean. This time Dean was ready, he didn't want to lose Don and felt it was time. The photographers were everywhere and now Don and Dean were headliners.

    1976-Deansupports-Coming-Out3.png

    Part 3... In Rememberance
After the death of Charles King, Edward thought of Sayuri. He wanted the family to come together to celebrate what would have been her 30th birthday. While Jude thought it was a bit morbid, he also thought it would be good for Christopher for everyone to get together and remember her.

Edward saw that Jude had hung back to himself and talked to him about his daughter. He told Jude that it brings him great joy to know that she was loved so deeply. And then he told him that, she doesn't have to be the only woman he ever loves.

    Part 4... Birthday Time
First we celebrate Arthur Damme's 50th Birthday. His son Jeff with his wife Daphne and their boy live with him. Thanks to mccc both Joe and Jeff got married and started families.
    1976-Art50-Bday1.png

Then we have 2 birthdays in the McDermott-Kenny home. Marie turns 30 and little Scotty becomes a toddler.

    1976-Marie-Family.png

    Part 5... Deborah
After hearing the news about Don, Deb asked Penny if she could ever feel the same for her, Penny didn't know what to say and Deb knew what her silence meant. Penny tried to apologize but Deb told her there was nothing to be sorry about. That evening she left and would never go back. She was determined to find herself and be the woman her brother knew her to be. She moved to Windenberg in a small secluded home off the shore of the isle. She quit her job and began writing, she even went to an all-girls bar where she made new friends. She looked onto the horizon beyond the ocean and took a deep breath.

    1976-Debmoves7.png

Will Deb find what she's looking, what will happen to Dean and Don now the world knows, will Delores forgive her daughter for not being there, and will Jude find love again?

So many stories to be explored, can't wait to see what happens in 1977.

Scotty's a cute kid and Deb's story is interesting. I think she's a very attractive Sim but alas, for male sims, she's choosing a different path. I think you should definitely follow her story.

1977... A short year with a family disaster.

Part 1... 1977, the year of PET (personalized computers that we now have today, though looked a bit different), Atari, first gaming console in homes, and the Re-Entry of Draft Dodgers back into the U.S. with pardons.
Now sims can play gaming consoles, though the Arcade is still a very popular place among the youngsters. I wish we could build an arcade in the game similar to what we had in Sims 2.
    1977-Johnplays-Atari.png

Commodore PET, TRS 80, and Apple II made their way into homes. Now sims may enjoy certain limited abilities on the computers.
    1977-PET.png

    Part 2... Re-Entry
We had two draft dodgers in this family.

First up Michael Shelton. He had run off to Canada and was gone so long that he married and had his own family. He brought them to meet his family for the first time after 9 years. Mary was very happy to see him and was overjoyed at the sight of another grandchild. Linda was excited to share her family with her twin brother. Things were very good upon their visit. Except for Connor. While Connor was civil to his new daughter-in-law and grandchild, he was not happy with Michael. He was disappointed in him and made him know it. Connor would never look at his son the same and would never understand why he ran. Michael decided to stay in Canada and not move back home, but he would visit his mother and siblings and make sure his family knows them better.

David Damme was just 18 when he ran off, but he went with the support of his father Arthur. Arthur knew the dangers of war after losing his brother and didn't want to lose his son. Art was happy to hear they could return pardoned and couldn't wait to see his son. David was happy to see everyone, he moved back home.

    Part 3... Celebrity Birthday
Don was turning 50 and Patricia wanted him to have a great party for it. Almost the entire family showed up. It was such a great night that Cate Johnson, George's wife died at the party. Before that everyone was having a great time.

After turning 50, Don decided it was time to retire from the movies. He wasn't getting many offers or really any since coming out. He has made a comfortable life for himself and Dean and is ready to just settle down with Dean by his side.
    1977-Don-Retire1.png

    Part 4... Birthdays
Michelle Hughes turns 6... such a lovely girl with kind of a nasty attitude, but she is her grandmother Betty's favorite.

Brian Wellington. Probably the first low-key birthday this family has had. He didn't want a party, just wanted his family to celebrate.

    Part 5...FIRE... FIRE... FIRE...
It was time for Delores and Warren's 50th Birthday. John had the party all planned out as a family reunion birthday bash. He went to invite Deborah, hoping to patch the family up. The day came and Eve made the cake as the guests arrived. Deborah had even managed to show this time. Of course, Delores was a bit distant from her and gave her the stink eye throughout. At least until the fire broke out.

    Fire.png

It started in the living room and Steven tried to put it out but, unknown to anyone as they all began to panic, things went crazy and literally uncontrollable. I literally couldn't do anything to stop the fire since I wasn't actively controlling the lot. So couldn't enter build mode, exit the area, or even get in to stop the fire with my sim. Frustration set in and John called the fire department who arrived super late, too late in fact. As another fire had broken out in the upstairs family room into the roofing above the garage area. Once again the firefighters couldn't even reach it, so after a lot of frustration, I let it burn and even helped it out a bit by starting fires randomly around.
    Fire2.png
    Fire3.png
    Fire-4.png
    Fire-5.png
    Fire-6.png

Since this was the umpteenth time a fire has started on this lot, this time we say farewell to this most beloved home where every sim in this family has come together and sprung from. We say goodbye to this home and hope that the new one doesn't catch fire as often as this one has. It is a family tragedy indeed. They have lost their legacy home and have to rebuild.
    1977-Family-Reunion-3.png
    Rebuild.png

*edit:* there are different sets of fire pics because I took them at different times when fires were randomly breaking out on my legacy lot. I am not kidding, near every time I entered this lot a fire would break out. So I have been growing tired of fixing everything after the fires because quite a bit gets destroyed each time, and thus I decided to rebuild a new one.

    Part 6... Unsupportive mother.
After a day of the fire, Deborah went to see her mom. She wanted to see how she was doing, as she did just lose her family home, and explain to her why she disappeared and couldn't come home.
    1977-Debconfront-Del1.png

Deb told her about Charles's visit to her and how she couldn't face being home or face telling her the truth about her. Deb told her about her new friend Ab whom she loves and how she has to hide her true self from her family and no longer wants to.
    1977-Debconfront-Del2.png

Delores was in no state to hear her excuses let alone to learn that her daughter and only child left in this world was in love with another woman. She told Deb that was no excuse to miss her brother's funeral when her family needed her the most and that she doesn't approve of her relationship and never will.
    1977-Debconfront-Del3.png

Deb stormed off and Ab gave Delores a piece of her own mind after trying to help ease the tension between them. Deborah gave her father a hug goodbye. Upon reaching home she cursed her mother and vowed to never see her again. Ab told her to just give her time, after all she lost her son, just lost her family home and found out her daughter is a lesbian.

    1977-Debconfront-Del5.png
    1977-Debconfront-Del6.png
    1977-Debconfront-Del7.png

Heath tried to plea with Delores about her feelings toward their daughter, but Delores was too blind with anger.
    1977-Heath-Pleas.png

Will Dean join Don in retirement? Will Delores and Deb ever reconcile their differences? And, will Warren stay sober and get his family home rebuilt?

The 1970s are proving to be a bit trying for this family. So much tragedy and loss I wonder myself what will happen next.

A lot going on there...there's a real sense of the post Vietnam malaise of the Carter years reflected in the story. After all the hopes and optimism of the 50s and 60s there's now a loss of a sense of purpose and with an uncertain future. If only there was a brightly coloured, loud and brashly confident era just around the corner!

One thing I've noticed when reading a decades challenge is working out when the children of one era will be young adults. For Michelle and Brian they'll be grown up in the Friends era! Whacky relationship comedy on the horizon?
  • JestTruJestTru Posts: 1,761 Member
I try to incorporate things that people may have went through in those times. I didn't even think about the Friends Era, but you are right and that could be a fun direction. I am looking forward to the 80s, I think it looks like a fun decade. I do have to go CC shopping though I have noticed that we do have more in the game now that can work.

1978... A quiet year for this family, just a lot of Birthdays.

Part 1... Broken Hearts and Life
We start the year off with a death. George Johnson died of reasons unknown, though his family believes it was of a broken heart since he lost Cate near a year ago. He leaves behind his children Susan Fuller and Gary Johnson, grandchildren Kimberly Fuller, and the unborn child of Gary.

Teresa had been seeing Beau for quite some time now. Only her brother John had known about the relationship. Mostly because he saw them at the dive bar together and Beau wasn't looking to be tied down and labeled boyfriend. Teresa went to see him at his trailer home and they spent a nice day together. He was a junker and spent his nights looking for junk parts to sell or at the local dive drinking the night away. On this particular day, Teresa decided to give him some news, they were expecting. While she was super excited, Beau wasn't too happy about it and made her leave. While later in the year they did reconcile as they had a bit of an on-again off-again relationship.

    Part 2... Getting Older
Chiyo turns 50. Surrounded by her family and closest friends. Even Jude's new girlfriend came to celebrate.

Don had been enjoying retirement while Dean felt a bit lost with all the free time, they wanted to throw Lisa a birthday party but eventually decided against it since there was a death at the last one. But Dean made it most memorable for her and they had a nice family pool gathering with cake. Lisa decided that she wants to pursue music like her father. Lisa is now 18.

Just a day after Dean decided to go on an evening ride, as he does most days. He hadn't been out the last couple of days due to celebrating with Lisa and making sure she had a great birthday. Don didn't want Dean to go and asked him to stay in again, but Dean was tired of staying home most nights and wanted to get out. When he rode he felt free and was in the midst of a mid-life crisis. He kissed Don goodbye and told him he'd see him later. Dean never made it home. He crashed his car up in the hills and didn't survive. Don was devastated and spent the rest of the year never leaving the house.

Part 3...Let the secret be known.
Margaret Damme turns 50. The family came out to celebrate this occasion with a good ol' fashioned backyard BBQ. Marge was very happy to see everyone and enjoyed a nice game of cards with Warren and Delores. John, being the family liaison, had planned the entire thing ending it with a round of fireworks.

    1978-Marge-Bday2.png
    1978-Marge-Bday3.png

After everyone had gone home Marge saw Teresa sitting on the couch a bit upset. When asking her what was going on Teresa told her she was pregnant. Marge was very disappointed, she thought she had raised her better than to be getting knocked up without being married first. She asked who the father was as she didn't even know Teresa was seeing anyone. When she told her it was Beau she hung her head down because she knew he would never be the father or man Teresa would need him to be. He was unemployed and noncommittal.
    1978-Marge-Bday4.png
    1978-Marge-Bday5.png

After speaking with her mom, Teresa wondered if she'd ever be a good mom and felt great sadness and ill.
    1978-Teresa-Prego5.png
    1978-Teresa-Prego6.png

    Part 4... A Death Roll.
Kevin Bertram becomes a teen. He has his mother's nose. What an adorable family.

Susan Fuller turns 30. While it has been a hard year for the family, losing her mother then her father earlier in the year, she was enjoying turning older.
    1978-Susan-Fuller30-Bday1.png
    1978-Susan-Fuller30-Bday2.png

It is that time again when I had to dish out a death roll. Frances McDermott is turning 85. She is the last first-generation child still living, not only that she is also the firstborn of our founders Emmett and Carolina. And as always I used the odds die evens live method. I tell you this is one lucky lady because she gets to go on for another couple of years.

Next up 1979... Who is this new girlfriend of Jude's? Will Don ever leave his home and move forward with his life? What will Teresa have and will Marge help her and will Beau stay by her side? Will Frances make it to 100 years old?

Until next time... getting closer to those 80s.

No, it was an accident. My thought process was the same as James Dean. Liked fast cars and going fast coupled with the sharp curves of Hollywood hills.

1979... Not much happened in 79 for this family. They finally had a bit of a peaceful year, at least most of them.

Since I had several sims aging up I went ahead and updated their wardrobes for the 80s.

Part 1... A birth and an age up.
Teresa went into labor. Marge took her to the hospital and she had a baby girl. She named her Tiffany. Once she brought her home she had Beau come and see her. He didn't seem to care one way or the other, which worried Teresa, she feared though they may have their issues with each other that he might never really be a father to their child. John, however, stepped in and adored his baby niece.

Susan and Timothy had been having issues for a while now. He was always in and out of employment and Susan had grown weary of his bad attitude toward her. They decided to part ways after a heated argument in front of Kimberly. Kim didn't want her dad to leave but he walked out the door never looking back at them. Susan comforted her daughter and told her they were going to be alright.

The Family Home is near complete. At least the exterior anyways. Warren was super to see the progress made within this past year. He can't wait to have the interior complete sometime next year, though he is looking forward to the pond being dug out in the backyard as they had to fill in the old one. He isn't quite sure where he wants to put it as his wife also wants a pool put in.

John Damme ran into an old friend, well acquaintance. Sherry Kempe, the girl he had been accused of having an affair with was working at Fisherman's Fork, where he had been frequently eating while working the local mill outage. He asked her out and she refused several times until she finally said yes. He took her to the cafe on the docks and the new romance blossomed.

Well the 70s ends on a high note and soon the 80s will begin. What will happen between Teresa and Beau? How's everyone else in the family looking for the upcoming decade? Will Warren finish building the new family home?

EDIT: If you would like to see the family tree you should be able to here https://www.theplumtreeapp.com/public/5f380f0090076100084382e4 ... It currently has every member of the family except for William Johnson's line, which does have his children but not their families or updated appearences.

1981 & 1982... The World of MTV and A Royal Wedding.

A bit of a longer post having the two years together. Looks like this family's drama is just underway.

    1981
Part 1... Grief and Growing Up.
The year didn't start so well for John and his new bride. They had a miscarriage which left both of them devastated. John poured himself into work and drink while Sherry was left to grieve alone.
    1981-Sherry-Miscarriage.png

They took some time off to visit family. Sherry brought John to see her mom Shirley, her uncle JC, and Joy. Joy was kinda rude to John so he didn't care much for her but he liked Sherry's mom Shirley, she is a very blunt woman who seems strong-willed. He also enjoyed meeting JC, like kindred spirits very sociable and love to drink. Shirley wasn't very pleasant with Sherry and treated her a bit harshly. They had always had a rocky relationship with one another but loved each other regardless. But there was something going on between the two that Sherry didn't want John to know. Joy was happy to see her and sad when she had to leave.

    Part 2... A birthday and a breakup
Christopher Fraiser turns 13. The family was super excited to celebrate. He is the grandson of Edward Damme and Great-Grandson of Frank.

Deb's favorite place to be was at home. She enjoyed the privacy of her life and not being around a lot of people, but Am wanted a bit more. She loved to go out and party so Deb obliged and went out often with her. But one night got a little uncomfortable for Deb. As the club was filling up with couples dressed in wedding gowns Am got super excited. She flirted more than she should and even kissed other women all with Deb standing there watching. Deb departed early and went home. Come dawn Am came in very unhappy with Deb. She wanted freedom and didn't want to be tied down living as a recluse. She broke up with Deb and left that day. Deb was sad she cried for weeks. John told her she deserved better and that one day someone will come along. Deb, as any good writer would, wrote everything down.

    Part 3... Visiting Family
Cynthia decided to get to know more of her family members and started a Fourth Gen club of all the cousins that would be teens before 1985. It gave them a chance to hang out with each other getting to know the family more as well as hang out with family that was close to her age. The group would include (from oldest to youngest), Cynthia Fox, Kevin Bertram, Christopher Fraiser, her sister Dottie Fox, Jennifer Kenny, Kimberly Fuller, Michelle Hughes, and Brian Wellington.

Francis was 88 years old and thought to visit family often. She went to see Lisa and check up on how her music was coming along and see Patricia. Dorothy and Carol accompanied her. Lisa had been doing very well in her music. She produced new rock tracks, played the electric guitar and went out on gigs. Her mother watched every performance and helped produce her music. Even Don got out of the house to come see her play. Turns out he still has many fans worldwide and the paparazzi loved seeing him out.

    Part 4... Moving On.
David Damme turns 30. He is the eldest son of Arthur and grandson of Frank. Since the war had ended, David had become socially shy and stayed at home a lot. His dad was worried about him not being able to move on with his life. On his birthday he decided to find a full-time job and turn his life around. He wanted to have a family just as his brothers do and to do that he has to get out again.

Teresa had finally had enough of Beau coming in and out of her life. She decided to end things with him. He said his goodbyes to Tiffany but the tension between them and his absence made Tiff angry. It also drove Teresa to drink even more and could be found at the Dive most nights while her mother Margie tended to Tiff.

    1982-Gary-Johnson30-Bday2.png

John and Sherry had yet another miscarriage. John went home to visit his sister and check on Tiffany. Tiffany loved her uncle John and he is her favorite person. Seeing them helped to ease the pain of losing yet another child.

    1982-Johnvisits-Tiff2.png

Part 2... Alcoholics and a Pregnancy.
Teresa spent most of her days away from home. She visited John as often as she could. While Sherry didn't mind her coming around and loved his family, she began to grow tired of the drinking and the late nights out. She spent most of her time in a book while John would sit in his van and drink. As Teresa was a fun and angry drunk, John was a super friendly and solace drunk.

Towards the end of the year John and Sherry decided to try and get pregnant again. This time they conceived and were super happy to finally be able to start their family. Sherry was looking forward to being a mom as John was over the moon about being a dad.

Tiff becomes a child. John brought the family to visit. Tiffany was super happy to see her uncle but she became very jealous of Leah and how everyone loved on her. She teased her a bit and Leah began to cry. Sherry saw what had happened but Tiff denied it and her uncle John coddled Tiff for the remainder of their visit.
