Vampire vs Spell Caster

Which do you prefer to play as and who has more power in your opinion or experience? Is there an occult you like better?

I tend to lean more towards spell caster. My highest ranking spell caster can out power every vampire. I find her skills more useful and have more game play options for me for story lines. I still really enjoy vampires, I just feel like my spell casters have an advantage. The minion option alone gives my spell casters more power. Not even Vlad is immune to it and is often put to sleep or winds up cleaning my spell casters home.

Rank does play a key role and if I had a weaker spell caster (which I do of various ranks) I might give a slight edge to vampires while spell casters are new.

Vampires for me, and it's not even close. I do love spell casters, and I have played several of them since RoM came out. I did several witches in TS3 as well, but I have a life long fascination with vampires and werewolves. I love movies, books, everything that tells a story around them, so having them in the game I'm naturally drawn to them.

For whatever reason, I have never encountered a spell caster performing spells outside of the Realm. Not even in Glimmerbrook. I don't know, do you have to be actively playing as one for others to appear and perform magic outside of the Realm? Or am I just so wrapped up in whichever sim I'm playing that I just miss it happening all around them? Whenever the subject of spellcasters comes up it brings this question back up in my mind.

    I don't have vampires (yet).
Spellcasters are lots of fun for aesthetic purposes- the casting and dueling and potion-making just looks really cool and you can easily make a lifestyle out of it in your story if you want to. The magic realm is beautiful. Familiars and brooms are fun.
The spells and potions imho fall into two categories: "cheating at life" and "hilarious pranks". Some people like that and some don't.
@DaniRose2143 no, there is no spellcasting autonomy outside the magic realm, unless you make a club with casting spells as an activity. Even in the realm, people won't autonomously cast spells. They practice magic, duel, and experiment on the cauldrons autonomously. But if they're hungry they get food from the fridge instead of casting Delicioso, and if the toilet breaks they stand there and mop endlessly like any foolish muggle sim instead of a quick Scruberoo and Repairio.

Spellcasters. They just seem easier to manage and I don't have to worry about the sun thing and drinking plasma. :# I also love the spells, potions, and familiars.

Spellcaster took the win in this poll from a few years ago.

I like vampires better because I just keep being frustrated at spellcasters being evil_disabled

like inferniate exists but whats the point when your supposedly evil spellcaster puts out the fire themselves and game disables you to use any more spells cause there is fire on lot

theres morphiate but whats the point when sims will just turn back to sims on their own in like 5 seconds

there is chillio but whats the point when its literally just freeze ray and also turns sims back in like 5 seconds

    its just frustrating really

and i also miss too many magic things from older games like show magic fortune telling dragons etc so its hard to get into spellcasting in ts4 at least for now

also tbh I've always been biased with vampires because they're a big mood

like guess who else gets sun allergy and burns in slightest sunlight, constantly has wrong sleep schedule, is always thirsty for a snack and would like to snooze eternally in her gothy mansion? me.

i do disagree about garlic though.
    garlic bread is life.

and yeah i guess if nothing else i do need spellcasters to solve some bugs cause some of the stuck items can be destroyed with inferniate so thats nice

I love all things supernatural, but vampires are my favourite. I think they have more depth and personality than spellcasters, which makes them a lot more fun to play. They can also be more powerful depending on their powers/weaknesses and they are very versatile so you can choose how challenging or easy they are to play. I do like spellcasters though and I wish we had hybrids so my vampire could learn alchemy without cheats/mods.

I always loose interest in playing vampires after a while. Even when playing them full out evil... it gets dull.

I tend to play spellcasters as "Sims who can cast spells" rather than "Spellcaster Sims" so I always feel like there's more I can do, because being a spellcaster doesn't have to be their primary focus in life. I've played several spellcasters who don't get any further than Scruberroo or Repario and never make it to the Acolyte stage, because they're more interested in being a writer, or an Astronaut or whatever.

Vampires you always have to be aware of their vampire-ness. Spellcasters can take some time away from being spellcasters.

I like both and play both, but I'm more familiar with spellcasters (I was a late arrival to the Vampires pack). I probably identify with magic in general a bit more, but as far as gameplay goes I think I like both roughly equally.
FYI: Just because you can see my signature, don't assume that I can see yours.
Because I can't; I keep all sigs turned off. ;)

@mightysprite I figured autonomy might have something to do with it. Same thing with vampires, now that they've nerfed them coming in and making a snack out of unsuspecting sims autonomously. I loved that, but I do understand how it could get on the nerves of those who don't. I wish there was an interaction in the socials where sims can make themselves available as a snack. They could let a particular vampire know that if they need a drink they are welcome to drink from them. It probably seems weird to people who don't like vampires, but it bridges that grey area of a sim who loves vampires but doesn't necessarily want to be one, yet. In TS3 there was the option where a human with high friendship levels with a vampire could sense when they were thirsty and offer to let the vampire drink from them. TS4 does it the other way around. The vampire can compel a victim to be drunk from, or they can ask politely if they wouldn't mind being a giant juice box. The dueling does give the spell casters more depth of play vs vampires and sparring. Both are important for leveling up in each occults powers though.

@simgirl1010 The sun thing isn't that bad after awhile. I make some of vampires daywalkers by working quickly after they turn to level them up to get sun resistance so I can let them go about their business without being incinerated. I do believe if they have an umbrella in their inventory they can use that to be protected from the sun, but don't hold me to that. Plus there is the sun resistance potion that lets them out worry free for like 4 hours. Maybe 8 hours even? I don't know because I've never used it.

Others I want to be classic Dracula types who can never ever go out in the sun, always sleep in coffins. and are totally repulsed by garlic.

Edit: Ok, I was wrong. Vampire invasions have not been nerfed, maybe tuned to happen less frequently, but this just happened. Not an ask to turn, a vampire breaking in for a midnight sip.kxZtrPV.png?1

Vampires are always more interesting to me but I play Spellcasters a lot. I tend to make themed Spellcasters.

I'm with you on the garlic. Half of my favorite dishes have garlic in them. I'm addicted to Italian food so right there I'd definitely need the two points to purchase the garlic immunity power. I'm not a huge fan of nights right now having just come off 10 straight years of working nights, but if I were a vampire I would only want to be a classic Dracula type so I would have to readapt.

I like spellcasters best mainly because the vampires can't eat real food and the recipes are one of my favs.

I prefer spellcasters because I like the idea of people who are made for magic. I like the spells, I like having my sims specialise in one of the magical branches. I am also very happy with the term spellcasters. My sims can be magical without needing to be called witches.

Vampires are very well done in sims 4. Objectively they are probably better balanced and developed. But I personally prefer magical being who are still alive, not undead and who don't need to feed off other sims.

Zombies will always be my number 1 occult. But out of the two I'd have to choose vampires. I'm actually surprised how many people prefer spell casters (though that's not a bad thing)
The dueling is amazing and innovative, and the realm is pretty but aside from that they alway felt like regular humans who have a bit of magic. I wanted them to feel a bit darker, more witchy and occult like. The magic spells are kind of meh and simmingal pointed out the problems I have with evil ones. No magic is ever performed anywhere on it's own so there's no way to even make a world feel magical. Familars are a cute idea but I wish they expanded on them a bit more.
I do like the curses and nightwraight is the best part!! I cheat him to haunt my sims just cause he's so cool lol.

On the contrary I have no complaints or dislikes about vampires. I think they were perfectly done and I'm never without a vampire in my gameplay.
Most of my sims are a mix of vampires and mermaids. (Soon to be werewolves I hope👀)(and eventually zombies 👀)
Zombies, oh please oh please give us zombies!! :'(

Vampires. Other than there being more love and thought poured into them, there being more of a sense of empowerment, but not a sense of being overpowered, and the sheer amount of options and control leading to vastly different stories and playstyles...there's just no contest. Added to that, the powers are unique (each having their own quirks), even regarding similar powers to other occults.

Aesthetically, I can appreciate Spellcasters (not more, but at all). It's all flashy and interesting to look at. I wish they'd stuck with the Vampires formula of chosen spells and weaknesses, and done more with the gameplay. I also have my biases when it comes to magic within normal people, as it's always made things just too easy. Magic artifacts are fine, as they usually have limitations and focus.

I can also admit my bias against RoM, as from the first look at it (back when the gameplay trailer released) I knew I'd be disappointed, and playing it didn't help. I'd love to do a Simming Tip about it, but I can't yet get past that. I'd like to...but not yet.
Check out my 'Simming Tips' for detailed tips and tricks (TS4).

I like spellcasters witches better. I am not really into vampires in general so this isn't too much of a surprise. But I did enjoy playing them, and I love Vlad (except for his annoying every new house visit). But I LOVE making potions! I want more potions.

What is want most is fairies, or even a better plantsim but alas..

I have always been more into werewolves than vampires though, so I am looking forward to the new pack.
Features I'd like brought back from the dead.
    | Picture in Picture mode | Custom Paintings | Preset scenarios for resident sims | Placing my own lots |
    | Saving my own Buy Mode collections! | Saving an outfit in CAS | CaSt. Smaller is ok | Open World |

Vampires for me. Spellcasters are pretty decent, though. My only gripe with them (and it's very minor) is that the magical effects from their hands are just sparkles. I was hoping for something a little more... flashy.

I do very little with either, but prefer spell casters. I like vampires so much that every played household has an extensive garlic garden by the front door. Said door is promptly locked at 10 PM.

Spellcasters. I prefer magic to curses, generally. But, I have to admit that Vlad is one of the best characters, ever.

I don’t often play occults, but I did make some twin spellcasters and have played them a bit. I do think they did do an excellent job on how you play vampires though. I have to say that I am glad that occults aren’t real obtrusive in the game. I prefer that my occults be rather rare and special in the game when I do play them.

Lol, I keep my sims doors locked too, but there is only one sim that has a vampire try to go after every so often

I like using a combination of morphiate and chillo before I go around burgliating things ;) Also if a Sim is annoying me, nothing is more satisfying than zapping them with magic and then seeing a negative moodlet afterward on them. Plus, with chillio vs freeze ray, you can't command other Sims to break it open unlike freeze ray.

From a gameplay perspective Spellcasters (or as I'm going to keep calling them, Witches) are just so powerful with what they have. While Vampires... Feels like you need to bite someone every 5 hours and plasma packs are nowhere near as good as they were in TS3, though it is nice having to not deal with sleeping at all when you avoid using powers or the sun! Sadly with witches though, things like infernate don't feel as good as they should seeing it still gives your Sim the overwhelming urge to panic at the fire they've caused. I just want to burn a few Sims here and there!

Feels like witches get a little less to do though, there's Magic duels, there's buying a wand or two, there's casting a few spells... And thats what I could expect. While vampires have a fair bit, from breaking into houses, biting people because you can and outright trying to cure them. Having a few quirks to pick from adds to the uniqueness of each Vampire too. Not so much with the Witch because of the lack of quirks, only so many ways to make each one unique when they all can learn the same magic!

Witches lose points for not having their classic pointed hats without mods though.

I like to settle with mods to allow hybrids to function properly, just as they could in the Sims 2. Witch-Vamps are a fun mix I'll never live without. All the fun without the sun while just being able to break into a house at will, take everything of value and torch the residents, works so nicely with the co-operation of a Witches spellset!

I still feel like witches would be even better if they had some sort of Sims 2 styled allignement, have evil witches be much less into the whole practical magic, and more into the "ruin your life while cackling like a maniac" magic. At least the vampires don't have to ask to bite anyone anymore...

When RoM came out, I was certain that spellcasters would take the top spot for best occult. But after some thought, vampires still reigns supreme. I think part of the reason is that I found mods to make vampires deadly, so when Im playing some of my more human-hungry vampires, they really feel like a genuine threat to humanity.

I don't let all of my spell casters learn the same magic. I have my mischief casters untamed and practical. Some know all 3. Some only really dive into potions while the others are about spells. That's a way I've kept mine unique since skill building isn't related to any one type of magic. It has to fit their personality.

I've found my mad scientist spell caster to be the most "threatening" as she's achieved 2 mischief aspirations as well as the serial romantic there's virtually nothing that can stop her. She's had babies from each occult, including Grim (who's equipped as a second reaper) with the exception of vampire (for now) she owns this load. I've thought to turn her a few times but she has more fun as a mad caster and I hate waiting for day walker as she loves the sun in Strangerville. Vlad never comes for a midnight snack from her but does call to go on dates. She has a healthy diet of garlic and mastered gardening so she can grow and make anything. She might be some of my bias to spell caster winning in my game

Vampires are enemies to most casters in my load.

So werewolves *potentially* coming has me excited to see what they'll be able to do.

I like both a lot, but vampires are my favorites in general, probably because Vampires is my favorite game pack.
