The Parker Saga

As with my other stories/threads, there is no legacy or challenge in this story. There's more of a 'plot' to this one than my other ones.

Joshua Parker had... rather an odd childhood, he'd say. Now, as he raises his own children, he decides it is time to deal with his past. Can he balance therapy alongside a full-time job and raising four children, each of whom are very different?

***
Prologue

The weather had been atrocious all day; such was the reality of autumn in Henford-on-Bagley.

9Mq2iex.jpg

The dew collectors had been working overtime, in total contrast to the solar panels.

dWaf35f.jpg

Clover the cow and Cloudy the llama remained firmly indoors, as did the human occupants of 2 Olde Mill Lane.

Inside the house, each of the four children were dealing with their boredom in various ways...

"Wheeeee! Flying to da MOOOOON!"
Hazel, one of the older pair of twins, had a vivid imagination, and playing in front of the dollhouse was her favourite pastime.

o79Edef.jpg

The stereo was constantly playing in the living room, and Lydia, Hazel's tomboyish twin, was often to be found dancing to the music.

FZfo5GE.jpg

Meanwhile, Katie - who was best described as Little Miss Independent - was sat on the landing upstairs, happily playing games on her tablet.

3HTMARu.jpg

Over in the kitchen, Clara - who had inherited her mother's outgoing nature and her father's bad eyesight - needed to ask her daddy a question.
"Dada! I very stinky!"
"Ooh, yes," Joshua replied. "Let's go and run you a nice warm bath."

DJRtW3o.jpg

As he bent down next to the tub, Joshua got thinking about the future. Hazel and Lydia were soon going to be growing up and heading to school. He remembered holding each of his girls for the first time and vowing that each of them would be allowed to pursue whichever career they wanted, without any sort of parental interference. Hazel's imagination didn't just mean she'd become an author, neither did Lydia's wild streak mean she was destined for life as a sports star.

jJH5IQA.jpg

Life is pretty sweet, Joshua thought as he climbed into bed next to his darling wife Emily. I have a loving wife, four adorable daughters and my dream job.
Yet he couldn't help but feel like something was missing...

    Chapter One: Family Heritage

The actress Belinda Parker has died age 76, her agent has confirmed.

    vVemEv6.jpg

Although she never made the leap to films, she was a popular star in shows such as Growing Up Crumplebottom and The Urbz. In her spare time she enjoyed meditating and yoga, often making posts on Simstagram about her latest routines, which also earned her fame.

    v8d5pls.jpg

She leaves behind former actor-turned-politician husband Adam and a son, although the son's current age and whereabouts are unknown.

    dLNc90v.jpg

    ***

"How was school?" Lydia asked; the twins were in separate classes.
"It was alright," Hazel replied. "Loads of people were talking about this actress who died. Someone even said I look like her."
    "Who are you talking about?"
"Belinda Parker. I've never heard of her. But we do have the same surname. And we don't know anything about Dad's parents."
"Well," Lydia said, leaning forward to make a move on the chessboard, "you do a bit. But brown hair and brown eyes are very common. And Parker's not exactly an uncommon surname."

    ihhj7OR.jpg

As Hazel went upstairs to start on her homework, she couldn't help thinking about the comments. She'd never heard of any of the TV shows Belinda had been in. More importantly, having quickly checked her phone on the bus home from school, she'd discovered that Belinda had had a son, who'd been unnamed in the Simpedia article. Her dad had never mentioned his parents.

    Fq0YojM.jpg

Later, she found her father tinkering at his robotics table.
"Hey dad," she said. "Some girl at school was talking about seeing her grandparents for Winterfest. How come we never see ours?"
"Well," Joshua replied, "my parents have always been... very busy people. We simply never got the opportunity to meet up."
"That's a shame," Hazel said. "I bet they would've been nice."

    apYaLcB.jpg

That evening, Joshua sighed as he sat down at his computer. It'd been easy to avoid mentioning his parents when the girls were small, but now they were at school and could ask proper questions. He'd seen the news articles about Belinda's death on his phone, and guessed that some of the children at the girls' school would have talked about it. Hazel had never mentioned her grandparents before, and he wondered if people had mentioned her resemblance to his mother, framing her enquiry as a more general one about grandparents. He wouldn't have had a problem confirming that she was indeed related to Belinda, but the real issue was why he'd never mentioned them.
"This does it," he muttered. "I need to find a counsellor."
Thousands of results popped up; counsellors specialising in all sorts of issues. Anxiety, depression, PTSD, personality disorders... all those and more were covered. Who to choose? NHS waiting lists were notoriously long, and he had the money to pay for private sessions.

    yabAk9i.jpg

Meanwhile, now that Clara and Katie had grown up, Emily had decided to take them to the Magic Realm.
"Wow! What is this place?" Lydia wondered in awe. Everything around them seemed to be glowing, and the sky looked not unlike Hazel's t-shirt.

    nMvCDUq.jpg

"This is the Magic Realm," Emily explained. "This is the spiritual home of spellcasting."
"Wow! Does that mean we're Spellcasters?" Lydia asked excitedly.
"It does," Emily smiled. "My parents are Spellcasters, and I was born one too."
"COOL! I can't wait to cast some spells!"
"Not so fast," Emily replied. "I'm afraid you can't do magic yet. Spellcasting is a difficult and sometimes dangerous art, and magical law says you can't practice until you're a teenager."
    "Boo," Lydia pouted.
"I know how you feel," Emily laughed. "But it won't be too long until you're old enough. Maybe when we get home I'll show you a spell."

    llh0j6x.jpg

"How cool that we're Spellcasters," Lydia said.
"Yeah, it is," Hazel replied. "At least we know a bit about Mum's family."
"Yeah. Try not to worry too much about Dad. I'm sure he'll give us answers at some point."
"Fair enough," Hazel smiled. "Hey, look at Katie doing schoolwork!"
"She's smart like Dad," Lydia grinned. "Getting ahead on learning makes sense. What do you fancy doing when you grow up?"
"I haven't thought about it yet," Hazel said.

Oh hey, you started a new one! Joshua seems to be holding on to some issues from his past with his parents, and I commend him for choosing to deal with it now that his kids are old enough to ask questions. Oooh, and they're all spellcasters, too! I bet they'll cause all kinds of trouble while growing up. Currently Little Miss Independent is my favourite 🤭

Spellcasters, multiple births and all girls seem to be a theme with my stories! There’s a reason for each one, though.
He has a better relationship with his father than his mother, it’s not perfect but they are at least friends.
It’s always a good idea to deal with past issues!
I’m trying to think of storylines for the girls. I have an idea of what will happen to one of them, but not so much the others.

    Chapter Two: Winterfest

The following day was Winterfest. Emily invited over her father, James. He was enthusiastically welcomed by Clara, who was happy to meet anyone new, and Hazel, who was of course particularly interested in family members.
"Hello!" James said. "Now then, which one are you?"
    "My name's Clara," Clara grinned.
"Ah, right," James nodded. "You look very like your mother."

    7TIIU4f.jpg

Joshua was in the study, playing chess with Katie, who had inherited her father's cleverness.
"It would help if you were looking at the board, you know," Joshua joked.
"Yeah yeah," Katie replied. "I was just thinking about what presents I might get."

    H1viMaQ.jpg

It seemed like Clara's outgoing nature extended to non-humans...
"Ohhh! A bunny rabbit!" she exclaimed. "Let me pet you!"
The rabbit happily flopped onto its back for a few moments, enjoying the petting session.
"Hmm... I think I'll give you a treat," Clara said, mindful of the gift-giving season. "I know, I bet you like carrots."

    1L8WWj1.jpg

Emily cooked the traditional Winterfest turkey.
"This is great, Mum!" Clara enthused.
    "Thank you, darling," Emily responded.
"Uh... Mum? Are you OK? You seem to have developed a rash!" Hazel exclaimed.
"Oh, it's probably not serious," Emily said reassuringly. "People do tend to get ill during the winter. I'll get some medicine and then I'll be much better."
"Oh, OK," said Hazel, feeling relieved.

    tOSzgLN.jpg

As a lover of the outdoors, Lydia enjoyed spending time outside, whatever the weather. Emily had planted a large garden, although it naturally wasn't growing much. Although fully aware that she might come across as weird, Lydia decided to chat with the plants. She didn't even mind that she got no response; sometimes it was best to share your innermost thoughts and feelings with something that would just listen.

    TEb41Ww.jpg

Like every child, Katie was eager to open her presents. However...
"A carrot???" she moaned. "Who mistook me for a rabbit?"
It wasn't even that she disliked carrots. It was just a rather lame gift when you'd been expecting a fun new toy you could play with. An edible gift would be much nicer if it was chocolate or sweets, too.

    XrdRqqx.jpg

The next day was school as usual. Clara, of course, was eager to make new friends.

    zxJ3Qoq.jpg

Later that day, Joshua took the girls to the park. The weather in Oasis Springs was a real contrast to Henford-on-Bagley; although he liked warm weather, Joshua always associated winter with snow rather than sun. After all, Winterfest cards always depicted snowy scenes.
His mind drifted towards his therapy appointment. He was a little nervous; he'd never fully explained to anyone about his childhood. Emily knew bits of it, but he hadn't wanted to worry her with the whole story.

    Chapter Three: Happy New Year?

Just a couple of days after Winterfest, it happened to be New Year's Eve. When Joshua and Emily came back from a trip out...
"Hey, Joshua, who's that on the front porch?" Emily asked.
Joshua's eyes widened. He recognised that blue shirt...

    jSsZOva.jpg

"Oh no! Dad!" Joshua exclaimed. "Oh my Plumbob, I can't believe it..."
    "Oh, Josh," Emily said sadly.

    tlqJCp2.jpg

Then the girls all came home from their Scouts meeting.
"It's Grandpa!" Hazel wailed, immediately cottoning on.
The Grim Reaper was impassive. He was very used to seeing families weeping and wailing over the loss of their loved ones; one became desensitised to it over time.

    9H6lGRK.jpg

That evening, Joshua invited over his old nanny, Jessica.
"Oh, honey, I'm so sorry about your dad," she said.
"Yeah, he died right on our front porch," Joshua sighed. "At least he's with my mother now."

    xcZ9YNV.jpg

Later, the family all gathered in front of the television to watch the New Year countdown. They were a little subdued; it felt odd to be celebrating so soon after a death in the family. Hopefully the coming days and weeks would bring healing.

    ps4UUGG.jpg

The following day, Hazel held a meeting of her Kidz Club, which Clara and Katie had recently been accepted into. The younger twins engaged in a Voidcritter battle.
"Ha ha ha! My Wisp is so going to beat your Nymphaea!" Clara cried.
"Oh yeah? Take THAT!" Katie replied, thumping the controls.

    Zu0otql.jpg

To cheer the girls up, Emily and Joshua decided to take them for an overnight stay in Selvadorada. Joshua celebrated his birthday there. The passage of time was starting to hit home after the past week. Hopefully he would stick around long enough to meet his grandchildren... provided the girls wanted to become parents, of course.

    DkGbrpt.jpg

"It's fun here in Selvadorada," Lydia said. "It's a shame we're not here longer."
"Yeah, hopefully we can come here again in the future," Clara replied. "It feels weird being off school, too."
"I heard there was loads of cool exploring to do here," Hazel remarked. "Some boy at school was talking about a temple."
"Oooh," Katie said. "I'll look that up when we get home."

    TY5BU2d.jpg

Sadly, Death was not yet done with the family. In the days after the family came home, the Grim Reaper came for Cloudy and Clover. Animal-lover Emily was devastated, and immediately purchased a new llama, Curly, and a new cow, Buttercup.

    Chapter 3
Oh geez, they got home right as Joshua’s father died? The game knows how to generate some drama, doesn’t it? Poor guys. And right around the holidays, too. Awww and even the animals 😢 Grim had a busy time around the Parker family, that’s for sure. Let’s hope they don’t see him again for a while.

Originally, when I looked via MCCC, Adam was going to die on Winterfest day itself. I did NOT want that to happen, so I used MCCC to temporarily flag him as immortal, then removed the flag a couple of days later.
Yep, let’s hope there’s no more deaths for a while. Actually the second llama, Curly, left the family as I’d neglected it too long :# so I had to get another one who I named Floofy.

Now to think seriously about what will happen to the girls… I’m going to be taking a little break from this story and go back to my Magical Mastersons one. I have an idea for Lydia, but not so much the other three.

Chapter Four A: Where It All Began

Windenburg was a quaint little town not far from Henford-on-Bagley. The little timber-framed bungalow in the Windslar neighbourhood looked cosy, which Joshua found reassuring.
In answer to his knock, a woman with dark brown curly hair came to the door.
"Hi, I'm Ayesha," she said. "You must be... Joshua Parker, is that right?"
    "Yeah, that's me."
    "Come on in."

    yLgK7Tb.jpg

Although Joshua had never been to counselling before, he guessed that the room was decorated pretty typically. Blue was the predominant colour, no doubt chosen for its calming nature. There was even a little box of tissues on the coffee table. Joshua didn't know if he'd need them or not.
"So... you've come from Henford-on-Bagley, yes?" Ayesha asked.
"I have. But I grew up in Del Sol Valley."
"Ok," Ayesha said, scribbling in her notebook. "This is just a question for diversity monitoring purposes, but can I ask if you're an occult?"
"Yes," Joshua replied. "I'm a Spellcaster. But I wasn't born one, I underwent the Rite of Ascension as a teenager."
"Right," Ayesha nodded. "Are you married?"
"Yes," Joshua said, and Ayesha noticed the smile creeping onto his face. "We've got four daughters, two sets of twins. The oldest set just became teenagers."
    "Do you have a job?"
    "Yes, I'm a mechanical engineer."

    q2WW5n8.jpg

"So, what brings you here today?"
"Umm..." Joshua replied. It was such an obvious and simple question, yet he suddenly felt tongue-tied. There wasn't a simple answer.
"Don't worry," Ayesha smiled. "It's surprisingly common for people to go silent when they hear that question."
    "Well..." Joshua said, "I didn't... I didn't have a great childhood."
But I kind of did, he thought. It wasn't like I grew up poor, I had everything I wanted... in a material sense.

    oplajRV.jpg

    "Were you an only child?"
"Yes," Joshua said. "Mum wanted a girl... I don't know why she didn't try for another child. Unless she did and just didn't ever conceive..."
"Your mother wanted a girl? But only had you?"
"Yeah..." Joshua sighed. "She told me as much, once. So that was disheartening."
    "I can imagine," Ayesha sympathised.
"I'd just told her I wanted to do mechanical engineering at university... so it all came out," Joshua sighed. "She wasn't doing as well in her career as she wanted... I'd never wanted to do acting, I preferred the idea of Scouts..."
He lapsed into silence, and Ayesha waited patiently.

    EvMgBdQ.jpg
    Brpvwtw.jpg
    yBxlPdK.jpg

    "That's tough," Ayesha said.
"Yeah. I guess I just wasn't ever good enough for her."
"Wow, as bad as that?" Ayesha asked, and Joshua nodded. "Is your mother still alive?"
"No. She died a while ago now. My dad died more recently."

They spoke a little more about what Joshua could expect from the sessions, then the time was up.
"Thank you for today," Ayesha said in the hallway. "I'm just going to give you a little homework. Would you mind filling in this form, just about your feelings, and I can determine if you're suffering from a specific mental illness or not."
"Is it a problem if not?"
"No. You may have a number of symptoms of, say, anxiety or depression without meeting the official diagnostic criteria, but you can still benefit from therapy. You sound like you have some unresolved issues relating to your childhood and adolescence, and hopefully I can help you achieve some sense of closure."
"Right. Thank you very much, Ayesha. Is it OK to use your first name?"
"Of course. Whatever you feel comfortable with."

Chapter Four B: Spellcasting and Scouting

Now that they were teenagers, Hazel and Lydia were keen to learn some spells. They knew they could get to the Magic Realm with their Glimmerstones, but they felt it would be more fun to go through the Portal in Glimmerbrook.
    "You ready?" Lydia asked.
"Of course! I was BORN ready!" Hazel grinned.

    NL1SFYc.jpg

Once in the Realm, the twins split up. Hazel decided to practise some Practical magic, and Lydia went inside the HQ building to see if she could learn a potion recipe.

    0qJDDe3.jpg
    rAR1Ega.jpg

The next morning, Lydia decided to try and make breakfast... but ended up starting a fire.
"Ha ha, you're in trouble," Hazel grinned.
"She isn't," Emily said. "It can happen to anyone, and we can easily replace the burnt stuff."
"I was trying to be helpful by making breakfast for everyone," Lydia sighed. "I guess I need more practice."
"That's OK, Lydia. If you'd like, I can help you next time you make something," Emily said soothingly.

    yVlKRqZ.jpg

All four girls decided to work towards some Scout badges that afternoon, so they visited the Bramblewood and went fishing in the pond.
"I hope there are some fish in here," Lydia said, gazing at all the leaves and algae in the pond.
"Yeah, we might have better luck elsewhere," Hazel agreed. "I'm worried I might injure one of those ducks by mistake."

    wPPSaPz.jpg

"Man, this is boring," Katie sighed. "Isn't there something else we can do for the Outdoor Adventurer badge?"
"Well, we can't cook on grills yet," Clara replied. "We could go looking for frogs, though."

    vQcy0nb.jpg

Hazel noticed that one of the solar panels was broken.
"Time for a little magic..." she muttered. "Repairio!"
A shower of sparkles enveloped the solar panel, and the green light at the top switched back from red.
"Wow! Awesome!" Hazel grinned. "Much quicker and more efficient than getting out a spanner!”

Im so glad I managed to catch this story from the start. Loving the story so far and the backstory you've crafted for the Parker family is intriguing. Im eager to find out more about Joshua.

Also Lydia and Hazel's dynamic is so adorable. I love their dialogue. 😆

Oops I got Hazel’s spell wrong! She knows Repairio, not Scruberoo :#:D:D I’ll change it right now.

Chapter Five: Thinking About the Future

All the Parker girls were now teenagers. Being the most outgoing, Clara had decided to set up a club to meet other spellcasters their age.
"Hello, I'm Hazel," Hazel said to a young man with curly auburn hair. "What's your name?"
"I'm Will. Will Gardner," he replied.
    "Where are you from?"
"Actually, I'm from Henford-on-Bagley," he said. "3 Olde Mill Lane, just over there."
"Oh cool!" Hazel replied. "I had no idea."
"Yeah, my mum tends to keep to herself," Will explained.

    bjgTXV9.jpg

Seeing that Will wanted to go inside, Hazel quickly exchanged phone numbers with him. There was definitely something about him that made Hazel want to get to know Will better...

    adDAoXD.jpg

"You know... I really dig your hair," Hazel said, shyly. "I love the colour."
"I like yours too," Will replied. "It's so shiny and wavy. It really suits you."

    xNS2Xus.jpg

A couple of days later, at school, all the girls had had a career talk advising them to think about the future. As a wannabe author, Hazel hadn't really thought she needed to go to university, but now she realised that it could actually give her some good material; not many books seemed to be set at university. Plus, having a degree was good backup in case her writing career didn't take off as she hoped.
The Language and Literature degree, of course, seemed ideal. Not only would it expose her to different forms of writing, it would also encourage her to develop her charisma skills - no doubt useful if she went on book tours.

    wIsSgi9.jpg

    In the kitchen...
"So, have you thought about what you want to do?" Katie asked.
"Um, I'm not actually sure," Clara replied. "A Communications degree appeals to me, but I'm not sure what to do with it. How about you?"
"I was thinking of becoming a professor," Katie answered.
"Yeah, that would fit you," Clara grinned. "Being really knowledgable about something and passing that knowledge on to others."

    rQ80kyl.jpg

As a gardener, Emily was required to improve her logic skill, so she settled down to a game of chess with Joshua.
"I'm beginning to regret this," she said ruefully. "I have no idea what I'm doing. How do people get so good at this game?"
"Practice," Joshua replied simply. "Just be patient, love."
"Patience was never my strong point," Emily muttered, surveying the board.

    fzhaoGt.jpg

The following evening, Hazel went over to visit Will. After a little bit of flirting...
"Ooh! I didn't expect that so soon," Will said.
"Oh? I hope you feel the same way," Hazel replied.
"Of course," Will smiled. "It was a great kiss."

    zjCqbk4.jpg

Meanwhile, Lydia had been getting to know the other member of the club, Rosa. As the pair chatted in Rosa's apartment in San Myshuno, Lydia realised she wanted something more than friendship.

    NwMaRjI.jpg

When Lydia got home, she knew just who to tell about her feelings.
"Hazel, I've got something to say," she said. "I'm... I'm a lesbian."
"Oh, that's great!" Hazel replied. "So do you have a girlfriend?"
"No, not yet. I don't know if she feels the same way."
"Lemme guess - is it Rosa Sánchez?"
    "Yeah. She's so pretty..."
    "She is," Hazel agreed.
"I noticed you've got your eyes on Will..."
"Oh yeah," Hazel grinned. "We're official now."
"Awesome!" Lydia replied. "You two will be adorable together."

    s8uJMHH.jpg

The next day was hot, which didn't often happen in Henford-on-Bagley. The girls all ate breakfast together before school.
"So, I hear you've got a boyfriend now," Clara said.
"Yeah. It's Will from the spellcasting club. He's so cute..."
"How about you, Lyd?" Katie asked.
"Oh... I haven't got anyone just now. But there is a girl I've got my eye on..."
    Katie nodded, fully understanding.
"Hopefully she feels the same way. Everyone deserves happiness," Katie said.

    BYtR52a.jpg

Lydia had decided that she fancied a career in marine conservation, with Biology the obvious degree choice. She decided to work on her fitness after school.

    qqwo0BJ.jpg

On a date with Will that evening, Hazel was intrigued to see a familiar ghostly figure at the bar.
Grandpa? she thought. She well remembered coming home from Scouts that time and seeing his corpse on the porch. She hadn't realised back then that ghosts were real. She didn't know where he was buried. She was still keen to find out more about her family history, but knew now that her father would reveal his past in his own time.

    inpHbwa.jpg

Not too far away in Willow Creek, Lydia was ecstatic to find out that Rosa did, in fact, feel the same way.
"Oh, I'm so happy we both fancy each other," Lydia said. "It'd be so unfortunate if our feelings were unreciprocated."
"I think any couple feels like that," Rosa said, "straight, lesbian or otherwise."

    g8xapjz.jpg

After a quick kiss, Lydia was delighted when Rosa agreed to become her girlfriend.

    4WvOQ54.jpg
    XUdW4Cj.jpg

Once home, Lydia knew she had to tell her parents. Joshua was tired and had to go to bed, but Emily was able to listen.
"Look, Mum, I have to tell you something," Lydia began.
    "Yes?"
    "I've got a girlfriend."
"Oh, honey, that's wonderful," Emily replied. "What's her name?"
"Rosa. She's a Spellcaster like us."
"I'm glad you're happy," Emily said. "I know it can be difficult to come out, so thank you for sharing. I know your dad would be fine with it too, but he's really tired."
"I understand," Lydia nodded. "He works so hard at his engineering job."
(I know Emily looks a little disapproving here, but she's not! Since I don't have Pose Player I have to just go with what I can get from the in-game screenshot function.)

    Chapter Six: Probing Further

Joshua was unsure how to feel about his next counselling appointment. He'd always preferred facts and logic and certainty, and there was no way of knowing what would come up. He was optimistic by nature, though, and went in with an open mind.
Ayesha greeted him with a warm smile and they went into the little front room.
"How are you feeling today? You seem a little uncomfortable," she remarked.
"Oh wow, you're great at reading minds!" Joshua replied with a laugh.
"Well, when you've been a psychologist for as long as I have, you become very good at picking these things up," Ayesha smiled. "I know counselling is tough for a lot of people."
"It's more... well, I like logic and predictability, and it's hard to predict exactly what's going to happen with these sessions."

    k2QVpXi.jpg

"That's alright," Ayesha said. "I've met a lot of people like you. In fact, I'm the same way to a certain extent; most people are."
    "Of course."
"I just wanted to pick up on a few things from our last session. I gathered that you felt your mother forced you into things, without you really having a say. So I find it interesting that you became a Spellcaster as a teenager. How did that pan out?"
"Oh, I never told my mother," Joshua explained. "She didn't notice me leave the house. I loved reading fantasy books as a kid which mentioned wizards and magic, and then Emily, my wife, told me she was a Spellcaster and that her parents were too. We lived next door to each other and became friends. She also told me you could didn't have to be born a Spellcaster and could become one, but had to wait until you were a teenager. So that was pretty much the first thing I did after my birthday."

    LuhSS79.jpg

"Do you... umm... know much about Spellcasters?" he asked.
"A little. I know they can be somewhat secretive, but that's mainly to do with not casting spells in public," Ayesha said.
"OK. Yeah, we keep to ourselves. Anyway, I went to Glimmerbrook, which is the ancestral home of Spellcasting..." - here Ayesha nodded - "... and found the portal, and went through it..."

    AtEMDkm.jpg

    More under spoiler:

"... I bumped into this guy who seemed quite knowledgable, and he said he was one of the Sages - who are, like, experts in their chosen style of magic - and he said he could transform me into a Spellcaster..."

    ScRdW9b.jpg

"... and he did. It was an odd process physically. I started levitating and felt very... odd all over, I can't really describe it. He then told me that I was now a Spellcaster and could learn and cast spells and create potions."

    hiDV62O.jpg

"Then I went to an area where you can purchase spellbooks and potion ingredients and stuff, and I happened to bump into Emily. She was my best friend at the time, and then became my girlfriend and is now my wife."
    Ayesha nodded, smiling.
"I told her that I'd become a Spellcaster and she was so excited. She thought it was really cool."

    oWrGAZS.jpg

"Right," Ayesha said. "That's an interesting story."
"Oh?" Joshua replied. He had a sudden worry - did she think he'd become a Spellcaster just to impress Emily?
    He voiced his worry.
"I don't think so," Ayesha said. "Perhaps that might have been a small part of it. But think about the way you went about it."
    "Huh?"
"I want you to try and come up with your own answer. A lot of therapy is about encouraging patients to come up with their own ideas and solutions, with the therapist's guidance."
"Oh. Well, I didn't tell anyone about it," Joshua said.
    "Exactly," Ayesha replied.

    UjQGoPE.jpg

"Well, aside from Emily of course... but that's different."
    "Why didn't you tell anyone?"
"It was none of their business. I mean, I had a nanny who was really kind to me, but I knew she and Mum spoke a lot about various things and I didn't want anything to slip out."
Joshua went quiet. Ayesha kept looking at him somewhat expectantly.
"I wanted to do something that I had chosen to do, rather than have someone tell me to do it."
"Very good! Ayesha smiled. "You took control, likely for the first time, and did something that fundamentally changed you."

    I2ZDpuI.jpg

"Huh," Joshua said. "I never thought about it in that way."

    Chapter Seven A: Will's Past

Not long after the session, Joshua decided to visit the graveyard and pay respect to his father's grave, as well as that of his nanny Jessica's. He wasn't sure if he was ready to come face-to-face with his mother's resting and the subsequent feelings yet.
He then happened to spot an unusual-looking gravestone nearby, and went to investigate.
Rest In Peace Alan Gardner, a much-loved husband.
There was a glowing blue stone at the top of the slab, which was intriguing. He'd never seen a stone like it before.

A couple of days later was Spooky Day, as well as Hazel and Lydia's birthday. Emily baked them an appropriately-themed zombie cake, and the family gathered round to celebrate.

Will came over for a visit, and he and Hazel sat on her bed for a chat. In a moment of silence, Hazel admired her boyfriend, although she also noticed that he seemed rather pensive. She hoped he was OK.

A few days later, he came over again.
"Are you OK, Will?" she asked. "You seem kind of quiet. I-if you don't wanna say anything, though, you don't have to."
"No, I should be honest," he sighed. "You may have noticed my dad has never been around when you came to visit."
"No," Hazel agreed. "I just thought he was at work."
"He wasn't," Will said. "My father died before I was born."
"Oh my gosh!" Hazel replied. "How awful!"
"Yeah, it was pretty bad. My mum knows more of the story than I do."
"That must've been really hard to tell me," Hazel said. "Thank you."
"I figured I had to be honest at some point," Will sighed. "I couldn't keep it secret for the rest of my life. I just never knew how to tell you."

    j3wn6H9.jpg

Yet more days later, Hazel went over to Will's house, and sat with his mum Debbie at the table.
"Will told me about what happened to your husband," Hazel said. "I am so sorry."
"Yes, it was pretty awful," Debbie replied. "We originally lived in a small house in Willow Creek. We bought a Murphy bed, thinking it would be a good way to save space. Well, something went badly wrong one day and Alan ended up crushed to death."

    GGEwZWp.jpg
    BwxQaNv.jpg

"I then moved to an apartment in Evergreen Harbour, where I gave birth to Will, before realising that it was too small and then we moved to Henford-on-Bagley."

    45yoNud.jpg
    Om2yurc.jpg

"So... I'm assuming Hattie is adopted?"
"Yes. I never had the time to meet another man. And I know it might sound strange, but I've always enjoyed a challenge, and having to both maintain a job and raise two children was a real challenge. Of course I'd love to have Alan back, but I've become somewhat used to being on my own. It's helped shaped me, Will and Hattie into who we are now."

    Chapter Seven B: Starting University

Now that Hazel and Lydia had finished school, their immediate thought was university. Having applied for scholarships and then for their actual degrees, Hazel was eager to find out whether they'd been accepted.
"Hey Lyd! I got in!" Hazel grinned.
"Ooh, well done! What about me?"
"Well, I didn't think I should open your letter. But I'm sure you got in, too."
Lydia decided to check the online application portal; sure enough, she'd gained a place at Foxbury Institute to study Biology.

With the weekend ahead of them before they started classes, the twins decided to investigate the various societies on offer. Both of them joined their respective spirit corps. In addition, Hazel had heard of something called the "Secret Society", which naturally intrigued her. There was little information about it on Britechester's student portal, but there was something that suggested that an offering made at the university statue was a way to obtain further information.
At midnight, a couple of students arrived and informed Hazel that she had been accepted into the Secret Society, and handed her a special robe. She put it on, feeling both ecstatic at having been admitted and a little silly at wearing the robe. For a so-called "secret society", such an obvious outfit would likely attract more attention than not.

The following Monday, with the weather getting colder, the girls headed off to their first classes.

    More under spoiler:

Hazel had learned that a lot of what the Secret Society did was appeasing various sprites, which could be achieved by making offerings at a location behind the local pub. Hazel guessed that rare objects would probably go down better than more common ones, and was grateful that her mother had such an extensive garden full of high-quality harvestables.

Winterfest occurred on the Wednesday, and Hazel and Lydia decorated the tree together.
"How's it going?" Hazel asked, untangling a string of fairy lights.
"Yeah, everything's great," Lydia replied. "I'm a little bit worried about the presentation I have to do, but otherwise..."
"Yeah, I understand. It's a good skill to learn though," Hazel said.

Meanwhile, Joshua had been working hard to acquire all the components to create a Servo. Finally, he achieved his goal, and the Servo was activated. Unsure what else to name him, Joshua dubbed his creation "C3PO Blue".

    bDuWGKZ.jpg

    That Friday afternoon...
"Oh 🐸🐸🐸🐸! It's gone 4pm!" Lydia exclaimed in dismay. She'd been told that she had to give her presentation by then, and here she still was at home.
"F**k, f**k, f**k," she muttered, trying (and somewhat failing) not to panic. Although she'd told Hazel about not enjoying the prospect, she had always intended to actually give the presentation. Would she be penalised? Had she done enough in class and her homework to achieve a decent grade?

    M3Ez0RS.jpg

    That evening...
"So, how did it go?" Katie asked.
"Not too bad. Two A+s and two Bs. I could have done better, of course, but I'm not too bothered."
"How about Lydia? I heard she missed being able to give her presentation," Katie said.
"Yeah, she managed a B- in that class anyway," Hazel grinned. "She rang the professor and was very apologetic, and he said not to worry and that it had happened before. Luckily she'd done well enough otherwise to not fail the whole module."
"She was lucky, then," Katie smiled back. "I guess in some ways it's good that it happened, so she knows to be a little more organised next time. It'll have given her a kick up the backside."

Well, after a long break, I'm finally back with the Parker Saga!

I write the posts on Blogger first before copy-and-pasting over here. From now on, I think it'll be easier to just directly link to the blog post rather than copy everything out. I've also started doing little preview photos, too, with Canva, which I'm still figuring out.

    So, without further ado...

    Chapter Eight: Proposals on Location

    Chapter Nine: Clara and Katie

    bmHV2om.jpg

I originally published the next chapter, Ten A, back in May. Now, though, I've acquired Pose Player, so I re-wrote it using fresh screenshots. It's still got a date of 25th May, so it doesn't mess up the order the posts appear in on the blog.

    Chapter Ten A: Opening Up

    rjPfioW.jpg

Big thanks to @_sims_Yimi for the advice on using Pose Player/Teleport Any Sim on her Tales of Camelot thread! I really should've installed it earlier, haha.

Finding decent "sitting down and having a chat" poses was surprisingly difficult. I originally wanted them to be in the living room, so I searched for sofa poses... most of which are either super-formal family portraits that people use for their legacy families, or they're somewhat sexualised/model-type poses of Sims draped all over armchairs and that sort of thing. Sometimes I'd find a decent set of poses (I mostly search with Google Images) only to find that they were no longer available for whatever reason. I then decided to have the discussion round the dining table, and found a decent set of poses. Ayesha's pose during the therapy scene makes her look almost stern, but it was the best I could do. It's from a different set of poses to the dining table discussion ones.

Anyway... the most recent chapter is Ten B, which is just some old screenshots from Joshua's childhood, as well as some cute ones from when Hazel, Lydia, Clara and Katie were toddlers. I <3 it when toddlers hug, they look so cute o:)<3 No preview photo for this one.

@Lucy_Henley Welcome back from your break! Looks like I have a lot of catching up to do. Luckily I'm free the coming week, so let's see how far we can get! Glad to hear the pose player and teleport any sim explanation worked! It's such a staple in my own stories that I can no longer imagine taking pictures without it 😄

@_sims_Yimi No problem! Now I’ve got the wedding chapter to do… I only used a couple of wedding-specific poses, but I’m happy with the way they turned out!
