I believe I understand what the problem is. I've run into it myself. When you follow one of your Sims from the household to another venue, job, etc., you can "take care of" (hahahahaha, sarcasm implied) the Sims that remain at home. One of the choices is "take care of self" With older Sims you can have them socialize, garden, skill or other such pursuits, but the Toddlers are left with just the one, which they don't do so well. D'oh. It's not as good a system as it was with Sims3, sadly. That was a pain in the pattoot, but at least if I saw that the background in the icon of my at home Sims grow red, I could pause the game, go back to the house and load their queue up with what's necessary or even wait until they are fully taken care of and then return to 'work'. In Sims 4, you get nagged if you leave for the amount of time that's sometimes necessary to fix what's wrong at home. Face/palm.

I have never (ever) experienced a problem with it, but then I never leave with all teens-or-older Sims if there are pets or children in the household. I don't know if it actually matters, but no matter if I have a cat or a toddler I never go to say Selvadorada with all adult Sims in the household until the kid is a teen.

The issue with toddlers is pretty bad, I have to cheat their needs because they ended up starving when I'm off lot. Care for self is not that bad, they still do it in some way and are not completely in a horrible state when I go back to the lot.

My sim tots go to daycare when the adult sims go off lot, yours don't?

My experience is like Beardedgeek’s. I have never left household members behind for vacation. When one Sim that had a dog went, she took the dog, a food bowl, toy and a pet bed. She would leave the dog at the rental and go exploring, usually returning to sleep each evening. Dog was happy as a clam.
I love it when my Sims have similar work schedules to their active career spouses. Obviously that works best. But I have found adults capable of managing themselves if need be. Very occasionally I might need to change to another option and back to “care for self” for it to kick in properly, but that’s rare.
I haven’t really left any toddlers, one parent is always caring for them. I may have tried a Nanny once, can’t remember if it was a baby or a toddler, that was fine.
You can always see what needs are being filled without leaving work, that’s how I know when to “care for self” and when to, say, socialise or work on skills.

with Sims 2 , when one Sim "travels" , all the actions for the rest of the Household stop until the Sim that had traveled returns . this is far preferable to "Care for Self" (which imo is a disaster)

I've actually never liked the "Care for Self" option. I don't want to return to a house of sims with full needs when it's like 2am and I want everybody to be sleep. Usually I have to set my sims doing a skill while I'm away from the house and sims are left behind in order to keep their energy need down.

Care for Self with toddlers in the home reminds me of leaving a RL toddler home with a sitter, knowing there would probably be tantrums, and knowing everyone would survive ;)
