I live in a small city IRL and we don't have great shopping or restaurants or entertainment, so if we want to experience other activities we have to travel 30-60 minutes away to go to a bigger city. So, that's how I play my game as well. Almost all of my worlds are just residential.
I do the same thing! I'll have sims live in Willow Creek and use the strip there, for example, but travel to San Myshuno or Windenburg for a night out on the weekend.
I've recently started replacing all the Maxis-made lots with lots from the gallery (I don't know why it took me so long, ha), and I'm really loving how just placing a different lot can the area feel like a completely different place, even if the surroundings are the same.
Also, I love exploring the little secrets around a neighbourhood, like collectibles, fishing spots, etc. - I think it makes every world worth a visit!
oh jeez, I'm sorry. I'm a n00b still and I don't know how to properly quote someone yet.
It's not you -- some features are restricted to new members for some reason (I can see restricting image posting because of all the trolls posting naughty pictures early on, but why quoting?).

I'm not sure if it's still the case, but it used to be you had to spend a lot of time in a neighborhood to get dig rocks to start spawning and wild plants to start producing. So being on vacation should help with the collecting.

I like to think that some worlds are too distant for my sims simply to travel to in minutes, or even hours.
Some of my sims will be traveling to San Myshuno for an overnight or even days stay to take in whatever festivals pop up, tour the art musuem, do some karaoke, or party atop a skyscraper.
I only see Sulani as a vacation world.
None of my sims will actually live there permanently.
Same for Strangerville, my sims will visit, but they don't want to live there.
I really like Brindleton Bay.
I would like for my sims to go there for a change of pace, focus on a particular activity like painting or writing while living in a house on the beach.
Did you choose that one based on the layout and scenery? I did use the modern area of Windenburg for venue lots, because it seemed kind of touristy and didn't seem the sort of place people would live. With the "fake" houses EA places, around, sometimes I feel I have no choice but to fit in with the area
So, say if the Landgraabs want to experience Windenburg, they have to holiday there.
Except they'll be wandering around wherever they see fit when you're playing another family. Is there a mod yet that restricts which world certain sims can be seen in?

Like I said, asnearasdammit. I surrender to the fact that I cannot control those I'm not playing.
So I get making Sulani, San Myshuno, Strangerville and maybe Brindleton Bay as vacation places. But who wants to vacation in Britechester? It’s just a college town.

If you don't have Island Living, you can go there for swimming 😅
Jokes aside, I think it'll be nice to go "on vacation" there if your sims have a kid in university. Just to visit them.
It's a shame that Britechester is too small, in my save there's no space for a rental lot.
For me it allows my sims to go on holiday except for the vacation worlds. The main one I want is san myshuno for a city break. Maybe it’s because I live in a village so in real life I would go away for a few nights to a city in the uk or mainland Europe. The other places are sulani for a longer tropical holiday and I quite like the idea of camping on the lot near the lighthouse in brindleton bay. Also I am now thinking of having a cottage in windenburg to go exploring as I have a medieval castle in that world. For me that is more like a relaxing few days away seeing local history so that will add more realism for me to the game. It depends on where you live in the world and what you perceive to be a holiday.

Maybe you want to visit for a couple of days to see what the place is like before deciding on which college to chose? Or you want to sell some suspicious fizz and de-stressing concoctions to the students there?
Here in Arizona there are those that live here in the cooler months then go back home to the east coast or up north in the summer. This will be nice to do in game. Especially for those who only play one or two households.

I too would have preferred that they make Granite Falls and Selvadorada residential, instead of adding vacation homes. I don’t use vacation homes in my game.
If I were to use them, it would probably be a scenario that would be boring to other Simmers, like my Sims going to a different world for a business conference.

They haven't quite ruled it out...yet. Could be some sort of technical thing that they need to work out.

I appreciate them giving us the option - but I also would LOVE to create residential lots in Granite Falls and Selvadorada and play 'native' families in those worlds. We have all these themed assets that came with those packs anyway.

For me I would have preffered hotels but I also really wanted to be able to create rental lots everywhere because it really gives you the freedom to create so many different styles. For example I want to make a really modern rental house in the heart of San Myshuno for my rich CEO sims to go for business. I want to make a rental home in the isolated area of Windenburg for winter vacationing. Maybe a "haunted" rental in the middle of Forgotten Hollow, where only the bravest Sims go etc.
I know at first it sounds like a useless feature so why not make rental lots available just in Sulani but I think since this is supposed to be a sandbox game, it was a great idea to give us the freedom to place them anywhere. Nothing is ever useless in Sandbox, you never know what creative players could come up with.
I agree about the hotels as it might add to the flavor and offer more choices, but at the same time I would like to run an hotel as well.

To me, vacationing isn't really about doing "vacation activities." My sims predominantly stay in their home world and a "neighbouring" world. This adds more realism and immersion to me, as well as a sense of uniqueness to save files. I love being able to freely travel between all worlds, but if done all the time it doesn't really matter where I make my sim live. I don't like traveling to Windenburg for a party when I view my sim as living far away, unless they treat it as a getaway/sleepover. This gives some consequence to where my sims live, impacting their lifestyles and making travel more meaningful or even a lifestyle of its own.
To make each world more unique, I add a lot of community lots to the worlds. I like exploring restaurants, libraries, museums etc, the same way I travel in real life - not too bothered with tourist attractions (or in this case vacation activities like skiing, exploring temples etc) - just taking in the vibe of the streets. My sims often take a lot of pictures, paint scenes by reference and sometimes buy little souvenirs, and spend time in the B&B/hotel I built. B&Bs are really fun for me to build. They usually set the tone for my purpose of vacationing there.
Examples of B&Bs/hotels I'm planning:
Cute Victorian-French estate with relaxing gardens in rural Windenburg. A quiet holiday for reading, drinking tea, taking strolls and soaking up history (visiting Von Haunt estate, historical pubs, dancing in the ballroom etc) - maybe even courting or being courted by a chivalrous romantic.
Vibrant, colourful, eccentric "converted townhouse rows" in Spice District of San Myshuno. Adventurous, "exotic" experience, making the most of the city life activities and cultures - experimenting with new foods, the bubble blower, festivals, meeting artistic sims etc.
Luxurious spa hotel in San Myshuno penthouse. A getaway for rich sims to gossip while being pampered, eat at fancy restaurants and lounges, shop at high-end city malls, possibly find a rich spouse or affair candidate etc.
Shabby motel in Oasis Springs. A weekend for classic bistro-style/pizza restaurants, "casinos," loose-moralled escapades etc. Or for simply being retro, stopping by on a road trip etc. Still waiting for milkshakes to be added to the game.
Classic white and blue nautical style beach house in Brindleton Bay. A quiet holiday for eating fish and chips wrapped in newspaper, walking along the beach on a misty day, exploring arts and crafts markets, locking eyes with a sim through a fish net sculpture etc.
Desert oasis, Moroccan-inspired resort in Oasis Springs (rich neighborhood) with emerald green tiled courtyard swimming pools etc. Nice for escaping cold climates during winter, as an alternative summery/beach-y escape to Sulani, for the aesthetic simstagram pictures, a honeymoon that is luxurious but still "down to earth" etc.
Ridiculously luxurious, old money hotel with moody orange-tinted lighting and dark wood, leather chairs facing massive hearths in libraries/studies etc in Willow Creek. The only tasteful hotel that aristocrats would dare sleep in in the "increasingly vulgar world." Also great for academic/bookworm sims with big round glasses. Maybe even for a murder mystery.
Bonus: vampire restaurant-hotel trap in Forgotten Hollow where the guests are the meal.
I generally prefer making these B&Bs community lots, though, so other sims will be there as well. This is why I hope we get a hotel/resort/etc pack in the near future.
Yes of course, we can always make community lots into pretend hotels, the sim just won't pay to stay there but it shouldn't affect the gameplay details. Just put hotel-type rooms on the lot and have your sim stay there overnight.
