Game saying "Hicks" is a "disallowed word"?

I had this happen to when I played TS4 for the first time after release in 2014. I made a female sim with the last name Raper but the game said it wasn’t allowed so I just changed it to Rapier. The sim was based off a friend of mine in real life.

I could see the word with the "S" not in it but lol what? Oh come on now, I didn't even know these things existed.

really hate it when they censor words cause honestly

    1. most of the time those words have very different meanings in non english languages

    2. english names are full of words with secondary meanings anyway so its making things very very weird

    3. sometimes the word will just be in the middle of another word that has none to do with anything offensive

    4. what is offensive is mega subjective and personally I think the over sheltering is worse than the actual words anyway in like 99% of cases because it demonizes completely normal words

    5. if you are not even allowed to name your own characters what you want... what exactly are you allowed to do anymore

I once got the flowers on here for the word *i*d*i*o*t*. Seriously? Censoring words like the s word, f word, n word, I get. But *i*d*i*o*t* really isn't that bad in the scheme of things. I wasn't calling anyone that word, I was using it in a story-telling post (as in, update on a family of mine) where a female was telling herself off for sitting on her horse the wrong way round (in Sims 3 obviously).

I also agree with everyone who says that people just look for things to be offended by these days. It's stupid.

Yeah, so I've completed the TS1 to TS4 premade re-make (only missed like 3 families) and yeah, I couldn't upload the Hick family with that name. Had to call them Hillbilly, which to me, as a non-American is basically the same as a hick. I don't know the difference and frankly, don't give a Llama's tail about it.

Could the filter please just filter out, you know, really BAD words....? And could they just stop the hand holding, over-protecting stuff...?

It's a common problem I have when making my Asian sims. :(
"D-ong" is commonly found in words and names in Korean, but it's been flagged.
And I had a sim whose last name is Thai: "Leechaiyapornkul" and I couldn't use it for obvious reasons.

(lol had to edit the first one, it was flagged)

Okay, I recently recreated a couple for Del Sol Valley whose last name is Hicks. Now, when I first created them I got the message:

"Warning: A Family Name, Sim Name, or Description currently contains a disallowed word. You will not have the ability to late upload this Household to the Gallery. Do you want to proceed anyway?"

Now, I can choose "Yes" and am able to play the household as normal (I have no desire to upload to the Gallery so I don't care about that part either), but what really bothers me is why is the game telling me what is or isn't a "disallowed word"? Now, for this particular couple, Hicks is just a last name. It's not being used as a derogatory term. So why does this game think it can tell me what I can or cannot use as a name for my Sims?

That is too funny. We have about 5 people in the company I work for whose last name is "Hicks". Good thing it's not a disallowed last name in the real world.

I feel your annoyance on this one. I once created a snooty 80's family where the mom was called Muffy. It wouldn't let me upload it until I changed it to Buffy. 🙄

i got some households with disallowed names or words. i really wish EA would highlight the words or names that aren't allowed. Convoluted system they have in place and it is impossible to know exactly what has upset this filter.

If i plan to create middle eastern or Indian named families, i should be allowed to do this without EA's filter impacting my gameplay. If i have a story to tell, i should be allowed to print it in a way that describes the situation in as few a words as possible with one word than a bunch of words to explain the same thing and then having to adjust around that to fit the description as i have limited characters to explain it properly.

EA go to all the trouble to create middle eastern CAS and build items and yet have no qualms about taking away that diversity by keeping this silly filter in place for quite a few names of such origin. Hardly shows EA's respect towards such diversity.

Interesting.... my post in this thread was removed. Guess i'll post it again

I names twins Yuki and Suki only to have that be a disallowed word. The censoring is just 🐸🐸🐸🐸-i-c

edit: and the irony of them censoring a word like id ee ot

Yep apparently using other ways to get past a censor is also not allowed. I got warned for using a word that describes african american hair. I literally couldnt go around the censor to use it and got a message from a mod. Hows that for the sims supporting blm lol
The Sims has currently lost its identity. Bring it back for TS5

What I don't get is, why is Hick/s disallowed on the Gallery, but its fine to use here? If a word is not allowed to use in one of their online services, why not across the board? Makes no sense to me.

In this current desire to not hurt anyone's feelings or identity we've ended up where too much has been censored based on a misunderstood potential to offend. I don't like it and it's a case of censorship algorithms seeing only a word and not the context.

On a similar note, I've tried to write the adverb for cool only to have it covered up in flowers so people think I've written something a lot worse. It's silly because cool with an ly on the end isn't spelt the same as a certain 19th century derogatory term, it only phonetically sounds like it but apparently that's still a cause for censorship according to the algorithm programmers.

Sometimes people today do not understand you don't have a right to never be offended. Deal with life.

I think those day in ages people are just a little too sensitive, its ridiculous with all do with respect people need too grow a thicker skin then if they are that easily offended, Kellogg's cornflakes cereal saying 'mother knows best' it's been that saying for decades, someone from this generation got offended because they dont have a mum then it got changed too parents knows best, if you get offended by every little silly thing, I'm afraid that your never going too be happy and guess what lifes too short for that, I just feel like giving a few people a shake and tell them too grow up 😂

Very little of this over-the-top censorship makes any sense. Not that I'm convinced that it's the same people in both cases. The more they try to enforce being inoffensive, the more ridiculous they get. For too many people, if you give them a little power, (like the ability to program the censorship of offensive words), it immediately goes to their head and they start to abuse it.

They would have to put an asterisk in between 2 of the letters.

How is insulting others for the way they choose to confront the issues in this game one of all due respect? If you disagree with someone about something, please be specific.

Someone must of put hicks as a offensive word on the database and hell aswell that's what I was going on about, I'm not insulting others, all I said that people are far too sensitive those days because they are @Hoverael

That's my point, you weren't specific. I'm gonna drop it though.

They censored 'rubbish', then released an expansion pack all about cleaning up trash. Seriously? I understand the need for censorship, and better forum moderation is something I entirely support, but it's just getting ridiculous now.

I uploaded a building once that was accepted with a name that will get censored here.

    It’s the 🐸🐸🐸🐸 Johnson prep school. (Wood-“rooster”)
It’s based on a real achievement test that was created by Richard (think of his nickname) Woodc*ck and Mary Johnson. Sometimes psychologists give this test to patients.
