It all makes sense now...

So they indeed were trying to get Star Wars fans to buy the Sims 4 and this only proves it because they put the game pack in the Star Wars section of Origin Store. They are really marketing the pack as a new Star Wars release and not just a Sims release.
Here's a pic. It's in german but I translated it.

TBH, I don't mind, and I think I know about it ever since the announcement. It's part of their marketing strategy. It would be so nice to have new Simmers too. I'm pretty sure each one of us started somewhere too, right?

Besides, they've done the community pack with the Knitting Stuff, so, why can't they expand their target market now?

I personally like this pack and bought it yesterday. Yes, this pack is not for everyone, but, there's still a few Simmers are enjoying the pack.

That would be my count as well. "a few".

Of course! Everyone is different. We can't expect everyone is going to enjoy it. I'm not a die hard fan of the Star Wars franchise, but I like this theme because I like the gameplay that this pack is offering, because it fits my gameplay preferences. I can actually count the packs that I bought at a full price, and I'm satisfied that this is one of it.

That's fine, I think the point that the OP tries to make though is that EA don't really care about that. They are not even trying to market this pack towards simmers, however it's EA so I guess it's no big surprise.

I mean this was pretty obvious when they announced the “Sims 4 + Batuu” bundle. I can’t think of any other GP that saw a bundled released with the base game and the whole point of that is undoubtedly to sell those digital cards in a gift shop in Disney World.

This pack isn’t meant for Star Wars fans, it’s meant for kids who like Disney Star Wars. There is actually a big difference. Any adult who plays video games has been given every opportunity to play Sims 4, many times for as little as $5 (or free!!) like a lackluster $20 advertisement will get them on board.

I won't be surprised, because it's a corporation and they need to keep on growing & of course generating profit while maximising the revenue. I won't deny that the lack of engagement in retaining the current consumer is something that EA really need to rectify ASAP before getting a huge backlash.

@xamira99 But that practice is what is ultimately killing the game and that's why a big part of the community is trying to go against it.

I agree. The practice is not great from consumer perspective & it's hard to find a balance where both will benefit from it, unless, doing the CSR for the corporate image, sales, or even a community project.

@xamira99 Seems like indie companies are becoming the future because of that exact reason, they can find that balance and don't necessarily have marketing people who don't care about the product and actually went to school for "how to make the most amount of money with the least effort", trying to restrict them.

They've also given early access to other EA Game Changers that are not Sims players and play the Star Wars games instead.
I see no issue in this. It's their strategy to gain more players, just like any other business.
To be clear, the GP does appeal to me and I will buy it at some point.

Anyways, back on topic, are we surprised? It's a collaboration so they're obviously gonna aim for both sides of the market

Well several people were surprised when the pack came so I think this picture really is kind of a "confirmation" of what they were aiming for and and explanation of "who had asked for this".
The answer is pretty much nobody. They did this because the wanted even more people playing this game which from a marketing point of view sounds awesome but from a realistic perspective is catastrophic because if it doesn't work then it's a guarantee that neither the new audience they are marketing too will like and buy it and also the actual audience they already have won't buy it either.

It's kind of like an "all in" in poker. You either bet high and win even bigger or you lose it all. I just think it's a little bit foolish of EA to go all-in like that when they already have so much money they can barely count it.
It's like that guy at the casino that already won like a million dollars and keeps betting and betting. "Just cash in and go home for tonight"

Yeah, but then again, there's a pros and cons of the indie companies, but once they are getting large, similar thing will happen especially when they need to appeal the shareholders.

Really? Can you give a name or link? I would like to see a non-simmer impression on this collaboration.

I have plenty to say re this pack but for now I will just comment on the toxicity of the forums...

I feel that for a "life simulation" game (already a potentially broad term) I think only having the Sims as an option just no longer works for such a big fanbase. We have so many expectations which doesn't appear to work with the Sims 4 which is part of a much bigger corporate model which focuses on making money and reviewing demographics. Even with all of the Sims 4 apparent failings it's trying to meet the expectations of a massively broad fanbase and translating it into a corporate language that only understands stock markets, profits and money.

I'm hoping more competition in the life simulation starts to come into play soon....

From the angst I’ve been reading elsewhere, it seems many Sims gamers are required to buy the pack. I don’t know why that would be, but it makes sense considering how much they rage and rage and rage about a pack they don’t want. It’s one of the weirdest things I’ve seen, and I’ve witnessed a lot of gamer rage over the years. Fortunately I’m not required to buy any packs I don’t want. If only life was that simple for everyone...

If EA wants to experiment and try different things with any of their games, Sims included, more power to them. It’s their revenue and their projects and they can do with it as they desire. I hope all of their packs are successful, even the ones I don’t want and therefore don’t buy.

This is something new that I've heard. I don't think anyone is required to buy any packs, except for the base game. If they feel like the packs won't add in any value to their gameplay, they don't have to.

If they weren’t “Simmers” before, they’re not now. I don’t want a bunch of new players attracted to this game who are going to request or expect more packs like this one. It’s not within the life simulation genre. And it’s not even done well, from what I’ve seen!

Well, I've been playing for years since TS1, and then comes along new players as the years goes by. So, I'm just wondering, why can't we have new players just because we feel like they will be requesting something that you might not be interested? Don't you think that is a little bit unfair to assume something that you're unsure? Are we saying that only the people who are currently playing the game are allowed to "request" something from the developers? Also, as far as I'm concerned, the community is welcoming anyone from any background and of course any new players.

Yes, the game has many areas that they need to improve, so I'm wondering, what else do you think that could make this game better?

Has anyone seen a star wars player play JTB yet? I would love to see it cause they will surely be disappointed if they have played other Star Wars games. From what I've seen all you do is talk and the majority of the world is set dressing so this game will not attract Star Wars players to The Sims at all and in fact will give the Sims franchise another fandom who will be highly critical of them so I don't know what they were thinking

The Sims 3 was the first sims game I ever played and owned. In fact, I only began playing it when it was well in its 3rd year of development.
Didn't the sims 3 receive a lot of backlash back in the days? Even so, I didn't know about it all those years ago. I bought many packs (on sale) because I really enjoyed it.

But I wasn't a simmer before, so does this mean I wasn't a simmer then? Does it mean I'm not a simmer now? What does being a 'simmer' mean? Can you be a 'simmer' before you buy sims 3, but not after? Can you be a 'simmer' before you buy JtB, but not after?

I did buy the pack (cause me really likes). Does this make me now less of a 'simmer' than someone who did not buy the pack?
I'm actually interested what folks think about that.

I’ll try to expand on my point. It’s not personal. We simply want different things.

The Sims has always been a sandbox life simulation game. The Star Wars pack is nothing like life simulation, and it is as far from a sandbox as it can get. Anyone attracted to this pack is going to have different expectations of the game than traditional Simmers. I don’t think it’s a stretch to assume that. Are they allowed to play a life simulation game and suddenly become fans of this genre? Sure, but that’s not the experience they’ll be getting with JtB, so if they like the pack wouldn’t they want more of the same?

We’re already pretty divided; some don’t care to play with occults, while others exclusively play with occults, and others are a mix. Being offered the occult packs separately helps, and yet there’s still many people unsatisfied with the amount of occult options we have. So we have a bunch of players who feel dissatisfied, for one reason or another, because Maxis can’t please everyone all the time. Add another group with different expectations to the mix and it just encourages Maxis to continue changing the direction of this game into a different genre of linear story-based gameplay. There are so many other games out there that offer that type of gameplay. It sounds like you enjoy both types of gameplay, but many Sims players don’t play other games. The Sims is all we have if its kind, for now; can that not be defended by its devoted fans?

If it took a non-Sims brand crossover to get someone interested in The Sims then I wouldn’t classify them as Sims fan. I mean did you see TS3 diesel stuff and then buy the whole base game?
