Does the extra discount for the first item no longer apply? (I have always been puzzled about the first item discount because the formula we have used since CYS came out didn't account for the first item discount. CYS price is (Set Price*.9)-(Item Cost*.9) rounded up to the nearest 5 sp.
The formula you post is definitely accurate, up to the point where someone owns more than half the total cost of the items in the set. Other than that, all the sets Iβve ever checked (except one weird one) were within a rounding error of the cost your formula predicts. I think youβre right that most of the discrepancies are just rounding errors.
The first item discount absolutely still applies, and accounting for it doesnβt really require any extra steps. The way Iβve always thought of it is, all items, including the first one, reduce the price to CYS by 90% of their value, and the introduction of the CYS discount is a separate event, triggered by buying one item but not related to the item itself. In my head, I apply them independently, and I think of the items I buy as increasing the total number of points I own in a set and therefore decreasing the remainder I would need to own to make the set free.
As an example, consider a hypothetical set that has a price of 1,000 points, and where the items sold separately cost 1,200 points. CYS should change at 600p owned (or maybe 601, Iβm not sure whether itβs βhalfβ or βmore than halfβ). Hereβs the predicted cost at various point totals:
own nothing: remainder 1,000p, cost = 1,000, no discount
own 50p: remainder 950p, CYS = 855p (950 x .9)
own 100p: remainder 900p, CYS = 810p (900 x .9)
own 550p: remainder 450p, CYS = 405p (450 x.9)
own 600p: remainder 400p, CYS = 320p (400 x .8, CYS is now calculated differently)
own 800p: remainder 200p, CYS = 160p (200 x .8)
In this case, the item that puts you over the 50% mark (when you hit 600p owned) also gives a bigger reduction than its cost, because in addition to reducing the remainder, itβs triggering a larger discount than was present before. But I think of the discount from the item and the fact that CYS is now even lower as two distinct developments.
How will this affect the formula to calculate the CYS amount to be free when the set comes on the DD?
I donβt think this will have much of a practical effect on these calculations. For it to apply, the DD price would have to be relatively high: more than half the total cost of the items separately. I think thatβs pretty unusualβeven a mediocre DD set price is usually a little lower. In the above example, the DD price would have to be over 600p for the 80% to have any effect at all, and more like 750p for the price difference to be noticeable. But if a 1000p set is on sale, itβs usually on sale for less than 600p at least once.
Where it does matter is for sets that donβt appear on the DD, like the ones I listed, and most compilations. This is especially true when one set in a compilation is on the DD but the compilation is not, so people might complete that set fairly cheaply and find themselves owning 55-60% of the total value of the items in the compilation. Then theyβd get a smaller reduction than expected from buying additional items in the compilation.
Iβm not sure what the best way is to post about it. I canβt come up with a short explanation that also covers everything, and besides, people would need to know the value of all the items in a set, not the set price, to be able to calculate this themselves. Maybe the most useful thing would be to have a heads-up about prices changing when you own most of a set thatβs not on the DD? Something like hey, if you own a lot of a set and notice you donβt seem to be getting credit for 90% of the value of the items you buy anymore, maybe itβs because your CYS on the set is now 80% of the set price minus 80% of what you own. But I might not have the best insight on what makes sense to other people.

The formula you post is definitely accurate, up to the point where someone owns more than half the total cost of the items in the set. Other than that, all the sets Iβve ever checked (except one weird one) were within a rounding error of the cost your formula predicts. I think youβre right that most of the discrepancies are just rounding errors.
The first item discount absolutely still applies, and accounting for it doesnβt really require any extra steps. The way Iβve always thought of it is, all items, including the first one, reduce the price to CYS by 90% of their value, and the introduction of the CYS discount is a separate event, triggered by buying one item but not related to the item itself. In my head, I apply them independently, and I think of the items I buy as increasing the total number of points I own in a set and therefore decreasing the remainder I would need to own to make the set free.
As an example, consider a hypothetical set that has a price of 1,000 points, and where the items sold separately cost 1,200 points. CYS should change at 600p owned (or maybe 601, Iβm not sure whether itβs βhalfβ or βmore than halfβ). Hereβs the predicted cost at various point totals:
own nothing: remainder 1,000p, cost = 1,000, no discount
own 50p: remainder 950p, CYS = 855p (950 x .9)
own 100p: remainder 900p, CYS = 810p (900 x .9)
own 550p: remainder 450p, CYS = 405p (450 x.9)
own 600p: remainder 400p, CYS = 320p (400 x .8, CYS is now calculated differently)
own 800p: remainder 200p, CYS = 160p (200 x .8)
In this case, the item that puts you over the 50% mark (when you hit 600p owned) also gives a bigger reduction than its cost, because in addition to reducing the remainder, itβs triggering a larger discount than was present before. But I think of the discount from the item and the fact that CYS is now even lower as two distinct developments.
I donβt think this will have much of a practical effect on these calculations. For it to apply, the DD price would have to be relatively high: more than half the total cost of the items separately. I think thatβs pretty unusualβeven a mediocre DD set price is usually a little lower. In the above example, the DD price would have to be over 600p for the 80% to have any effect at all, and more like 750p for the price difference to be noticeable. But if a 1000p set is on sale, itβs usually on sale for less than 600p at least once.
Where it does matter is for sets that donβt appear on the DD, like the ones I listed, and most compilations. This is especially true when one set in a compilation is on the DD but the compilation is not, so people might complete that set fairly cheaply and find themselves owning 55-60% of the total value of the items in the compilation. Then theyβd get a smaller reduction than expected from buying additional items in the compilation.
Iβm not sure what the best way is to post about it. I canβt come up with a short explanation that also covers everything, and besides, people would need to know the value of all the items in a set, not the set price, to be able to calculate this themselves. Maybe the most useful thing would be to have a heads-up about prices changing when you own most of a set thatβs not on the DD? Something like hey, if you own a lot of a set and notice you donβt seem to be getting credit for 90% of the value of the items you buy anymore, maybe itβs because your CYS on the set is now 80% of the set price minus 80% of what you own. But I might not have the best insight on what makes sense to other people.
