Written by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong for Motown Records in 1966. First production by Gladys Knight and The Pips in 1967 reached number two on the billboard chart. Marvin Gaye put it on his 1968 album, "In The Groove". He also released it as a single and it was the number 1 song on the Billboard Pop Singles Chart for 7 weeks. It also became the biggest hit single on the Motown label for quite some time. CCR made an 11 minute version for their 1970 album, "Cosmo's Factory".
The song is a satire of televangelism, released in a period when several televangelists such as Jimmy Swaggart, Robert Tilton and Jim Bakker were under investigation for promising financial success to their listeners, provided they sent money to them. The song reached No. 10 in Canada, No. 20 in the United Kingdom and No. 23 in the United States.

Eventually, it got so bad that Cathy had to go to the hospital where it was discovered that she had large tumors in her womb. Sadly, she died weeks later. When LaPread submitted the song for consideration, he was told it was good, but didn't have a middle. Lionel Richie had a song with a middle, but no beginning. They worked on it together and worked out the words for the song. It ended up being a tribute to Ronald's wife, Cathy.
