    Umm, err, hi ...

My, so good to see this thread still going strong and that I recognise quite a few names!

Since I was last a regular visitor here I've been getting rather carried away with all the YouTube stuff and, sadly, moved away from The Sims. However, I had a couple of comments recently asking if I would create some new Sims videos and that got me thinking ... how much I enjoyed playing The Sims 3, how I struggle to like The Sims 4, and the fun I had here on the forums ... and then finding that the DD community is still here!

Which made me feel all nostalgic for the wonderful time I had here and how much support and encouragement there was in this particular community of Sim Addicts (do you still use that phrase ... are we allowed to use it? ) such that I became confident enough to share my builds and my Sims stories ... which lead on to my experimenting with YouTube and eventually flying the nest altogether. :pensive:

Anyway, I hope everyone here is well and, in this very strange and difficult time, enjoying the support and love that this beautiful group provides.

If anyone would like to see what I'm up to on YouTube (sadly still without any Sims content  ) there should be a link in my signature and if you fancy encouraging me to start a new Sims series I have a little Twitter poll that's running for a couple more days.

Last, and most definitely not least, I must thank @ZeeGee (who is still creating magnificent Sims 3 films) who prompted me to come back here and say "hi" to you all.

@ajaxpost Its so nice to see you here! And glad you’ve found your YouTube niche. I tried to vote for continuing the S3 legacy but it wouldn’t let me without signing in and I don’t have Twitter. So here’s my vote for the Slades to continue.

And thanks for the plug for my videos. 😊

I do understand the ‘niche’ thing though my niche has been small from the start. Sims 3 machinima, which isn’t a huge niche, and then when you narrow that down to townies and sims lore it’s even less. Though when I finish this series I do hope to do stories with my own characters.

I am very curious as to how you got sponsors. I’ve seen that around a lot and always wondered how it worked.

    Thank you @ZeeGee.

Oh, I think you do yourself a disservice, you may have only created Sims 3 machinima so far but, if you were so inclined I have no doubt you could build on that with non-Sims machinima or, in fact, almost any sort of visual story-telling. I reckon, as far as YouTube and most (if not all) your audience is concerned, it's the stories you tell and the way you tell them - it just so happens that you're using Sims 3 as your medium at the moment.

I have been fortunate enough to find a community of other small YouTubers who have been very helpful and encouraging in helping me find an audience. They also clued me in about how to connect with game publishers and stores. So, for example, I don't have any 'sponsors' as such but I did sign up for an affiliate link with a couple of online stores (Humble and cdkeys) which would give me a small percentage of any sales. Though, as far as I can tell, no one has actually used any of my links so far.

They also directed me to sites such as keymailer and woovit where you can sign up to request early access keys to games that you could create content for, even channels as small as mine can be useful to developers and publishers looking for a cheap way to promote their games. :sunglasses:

@ajaxpost Aaah thank you so much! That brought a tear to my eye. So sweet. I’ve always loved writing and this is the first chance I’ve had to do anything visual. I do get frustrated at times when there’s something I’m trying to convey and just can’t because of certain limitations in sims but it’s the only machinima I know. Learning to animate is helping but I need to improve a lot on that. I did animate the painting scene though when Dina painted Michael’s nose! That was fun.

Well obviously what you are doing is working because your subscriber count is going up up up! What you mentioned in your latest vid helped me. I finally hid my subscriber count About a year ago cause I’d get so excited about a new subscriber and then the next day the count would go back down, and sometimes even lower! Now I don’t see the count unless I go into creator. I guess that is a trend on YT from what you said, to vary up and down a few. (And yes I’m still at the point where one new subscriber makes me happy. 😂) I think I’m around 320 now.

@ajaxpost nice to see you around here again. Twitter also wouldn't let me vote due to no account. I would just vote for anything with the sims.
As of April 24th 2015 I joined the own the store club. Thank you to those who helped in my journey.

Oh yes, I also enjoy writing but found that it takes me soooooo long to get the words to fit what I see in my head, so I found going to video made it that much easier to tell my stories. :sunglasses:

I loved that 'nose dab' scene! Immediately thought, "how did she do that?"

One thing I'm still trying to come to terms with is how 'needy' social media makes you. Every time I post something - a tweet, a video, a Facebook update, even a comment here - I need to know that it has been seen, has been liked, that people are engaging with it. It can get quite bad on YouTube, once you realise that you have an audience, that a big milestone is within reach, and the urge to "watch the numbers" becomes so great that losing and gaining one or two subscribers becomes an emotional roller-coaster! :anguished:

Thankfully it's just a hobby and (before The Lockdown at least!) I have other interests to divert me and keep me sane ... ish.

And thanks for your 'votes', I will endeavour to find more times for The Sims

    Hi @bekkasan!

You're right, it's too easy to be angry and offensive on Twitter and, to be honest, I do fall into that trap quite a lot - though hopefully more angry than offensive. But there are lots of good people on there too so I'm hanging on in there.

And thank you so much for the vote and sub.

I think I missed something about Twitter.

As for the urge to know anything instantly on social media that @ajaxpost mentioned, it's called FOMO, and last time I heard about it, it was about to be recognized as a psychological problem as it caused many burnouts and such.

Thank you! I loved filming that scene but adding animations does make the process soooo much longer to an already long process. Hopefully I will get better and faster with that.

For me, I put so much heart and soul and TIME into my videos so it’s gratifying to know people enjoy them. I love getting comments. And when I see that subscriber number go up I feel like there’s one more person who appreciates my effort. But the reason I really do it is because I love it, so numbers shouldn’t matter. Therefore, hiding the count made me enjoy it more. Does that make sense?

@Lexers615 I had to google FOMO. Interesting and I can see how that could be an issue. I think it’s different from what Adrian and I experience. We just want to know that what we’re doing is appealing to an audience, which gives us incentive to continue. For example if an author writes a book and it doesn’t sell, it’s discouraging. If it does sell, it inspires the author to write more.

I do understand FOMO as I have friends affected by it, mostly from a younger generation. I’m really bad at social media. I have FB and IG accounts but rarely check them. My OE friends assume I know something cause they’ve posted it and that can be frustrating. To me, simming is so much more fun than scrolling through gobs of ads and politics and ‘what I had for supper’ posts. But I’m from that MTV generation who grew up without all that so maybe that’s a factor. 😊

Didn’t mean to write a book but there ya go!

Indeed, though, as @ZeeGee noted, Fear Of Missing Out is not quite what I can 'suffer' from - it might be more accurately described as Fear Of Being Missed Out (FOBMO? )

I'm really good at being totally unaware of what's going on and whatever the latest trend might be ... with the possible exception of social justice issues (which often stokes my anger on Twitter). I do have friends who are just a few years younger than me who pay attention to music trends for example but we're mostly 20, 30 or even 40 years beyond social media fashions!! 🤣

Absolutely understand that, I sometimes have to remind myself that I'm doing it because I'm playing games I love and have the opportunity to share that enjoyment. But, there's also that special buzz when someone responds and a bit of me wants to please them as well. And now that I'm spending time with other enthusiastic creators (some who do it as a business) and getting encouragement to improve not just the videos but their reach and engagement a whole new feedback loop comes into play.

@ajaxpost - ADRIAN!!!!! So good to see you. Welcome home! Our little DD thread is still going strong. I did vote on Twitter (@Lexers615 and @ZeeGee - I had to google FOMO too). I would have liked to place two votes because I would like to get back into watching the Slade Dynasty but I would be interested in new stories.

@Me1620 ... Hi Jodi, thank you, and it's really lovely to see you here, still welcoming and sharing your knowledge with all the new members of this community. 🤗

I will think on bringing The Sims back, to be honest I too would love to get involved with the Slades again! Depending on how much time I have in the schedule, maybe in a couple of months time ... should also be easier now if only because my new computer doesn't take twenty minutes to load the save games! 🤣

What's the Twitter vote thing that you are talking about?
A few days ago I had a very informal Twitter vote (https://twitter.com/ajaxpost) about whether I should bring a Sims series back to my YouTube channel - I started on YouTube with a Sims 3 legacy story but stopped just over a year ago. :)

@ZeeGee - I am glad you prompted ajaxpost to pop in a say "hi".

*off to ZeeGee's thread to comment on her excellent latest episode*

You’re welcome! Love to see old friends stop by. And thanks for commenting on my thread and on YT. I’ll be over to reply later when I have more time. 😊💕

@ajaxpost I voted for the slades to continue but would watch other Sims 3 stories too! I do understand the ‘special buzz’. All artists no matter the medium appreciate that I think. 😊 I realize you think like a YouTuber now and don’t want to alienate your main base followers but maybe very short sims episodes occasionally? Thinking out loud here 🤷‍♀️

Oh, sorry, I don't lurk around every day. But I guess you should do it if you feel that way. You do a good job and you'll always have an audience.

    Thank you. 😊

I actually started the Slade legacy story over EIGHT years ago (🤯) and when I brought it to a halt last year I hadn't even finished generation 4! I feel a kind of obligation to them to continue their story ... 😉😂

'short sims episodes'??? ... have you seen my channel? 😱 I don't think I could do a short episode if my life depended on it ... I just love to rabbit on and wander around on tangents! 🤣

Thank you, and yes, just like hanging out here ... when it comes down to it it's all about doing something you enjoy and sharing with friends. :+1:

@ajaxpost Lol your tangents is your most fun about watching! I was trying to think of a way to get your sims stories back, short is better than nothing. No way has it been 8 years! Doesn’t seem possible.

Aye, shorter would certainlybe a good idea, to be honest @ZeeGee it was mostly my inability to keep the episodes short and to the point that made me stop.

Yep January 2012 is the date of the first chapter on the blog ... it's strange how it feels at once like such a distant time (life was very different then) and yet, also having had such fun with the game, not that long ago.
