Exciting times ahead for simulation games. 👍 I'd be chafing at the bit if I didn't have Sims 4 to keep me occupied.

Read it again. The first line says "establish the look" and a couple of times after it states, "define and refine".

I think it's pretty clear in the ad that the new hire will be working with the artists to create a design for the initial characters and art style.

It definitely lines up with what the Gurus have been saying about Sims 4 lasting a few more years.

But it's still exciting to think it might be on the Unreal engine or something like it. Hopefully the game will be worth the wait.

Sims 4 already lasted 6 whole years, and people are already going back to Sims 1-3. It looks like quite a few people are just sick and tired of Sims 4 and just want to move on already. Who wants a few more years of bugs, glitches and half-baked content when a bigger and better game can come out ? Sims 4 is a decent game, but it's time to move on.

Whether that's true or not is not going to make the new game be created any faster. It's not like they can magic Sims 5 into creation in a year, and if they try to get it out as fast as possible, it's not going to be the "bigger and better" game that everyone is hoping for.

They usually have some kind of announcement when production is in full swing. Until that announcement comes with more information, it's logical to assume it will be a while.

I think the reason why they don't want to announce TS5 is because then NO ONE will buy TS4 and just save their money for TS5.

Also, if TS5 will be built on the Unreal Engine, then they won't have to build their own game engine from scratch and vastly cut down production time. That's the only reason why the previous iterations had taken so long.

That's right, people can still play TS4 in the meantime. I'm still playing TS3 myself. That's what we all did waiting for packs to come out when the previous games were being released.

With TS1, I just played the basegame itself while waiting for the first EP. But back then we were all "pure" because we didn't know what we were getting ourselves into and our expectations weren't so jaded. So I totally enjoyed the basegame for what it was and waiting for the next EPs wasn't a drag!

I would wait until just after TS5 comes out because then they'll be cheaper. That's what happened with all the previous iterations.

Well that means that they are working on something. Maybe they are in the pre-production phase of the sims5.

Now I am not sure how the engine would work, if they would still keep the python client but run it in unreal, I seem to recall that the sims4 was originally planned to be in unreal, you can still find some old screenshots that shows what the game looked like.

One thing that is good if they will choose to stick with unreal is that they can find a lot of talent, it is a well established engine. And maybe that could help them with keeping the engine stable.

I do wonder how modding will be as you mentioned, I was in a conversation with TwistedMexi recently and he mentioned the following why the game needs to remove everything when you travel between or in neighborhoods.

So it looks to me if they would make a new engine for the sims5 and they would not make any mod tools for it, then modding would not be supported for the sims5.

I hope that unreal could help Maxis with making a game that both them and the fans want but I would like to be more sure that they are actually going to use it. While many games made with the unreal engine are great, they are also the results of many people working hard for a long time, maybe Maxis would have to make their own tools, like they did for the sims4, to be able to make the sims5. Hopefully those tools could be made into versions that we the players ourselves could use and that could make Create a world and Create a style possible.

As for when they should go into full-production. I think they should do it by the end of the year to be honest.

I don't see why it can't be modded. I've played a lot of Unreal games that have plenty of mods written for them. I really like the Unreal Engine. This is Epic's baby and I think they will help Maxis as much as they can with any help that's needed. I also think that Maxis would sign off on modding tools. You know why? Because they know that the modding community will take The Sims 5 that may be fantastic to begin with and making into it an even more amazing game!

So I really hope we get the modding, CAW and CASt tools like you said at basegame! I used to do some coding when I was at university. I might want to do that again! I also hope the CAW tool will be easier to work with. I watched James Turner create Aluna which is amazing and of course he made it all look so easy, but I know that it probably isn't, lol!

I think they're in full-production now and that a lot of things are near completion. Usually the artstyle is one of the things they focus on at this time after most of the mechanics have been worked out.

Well that depends if Maxis can work on both the sims4 and the sims5 in full-production. That requires a lot of people. On the other hand, they seem to outsource a lot when it comes to the sims4 so maybe they have moved people over and will move more people over in 2021. I would not mind if they would keep a smaller team still working on the sims4 that could work on bug fixes and outsource some smaller packs for 2021 and 2022.

When it comes to modding, I think TwistedMexi talked about script mods and how script friendly the python client is. A lot of games don't allow scripting, especially not games that you can play online, I hope that Maxis will take modding into consideration. I know the gurus like modding and are often impressed with what people can come up with, but I think the higher ups in EA don't care about modding, some might even see it as a risk, so they have to keep a good balance there.

What I am mostly hoping with Maxis making the sims5 in unreal is that they will get the tools required for them to make the content that the fans want. It should not take 6 years to add a ladder to the game. Most videos I have seen about unreal is how impressive the graphics engine is, but I am not sure how well it would handle the complex building mechanics and AI that a sims game would need. We have seen examples in games like shooters how the AI reacts to objects in the world and to the player in a very realistic way, but that's mostly for shooters, I would really like to see if the same could be applied to a sim in a room with sims, furniture and other objects.

TS4 has it's die hard fans just like TS2 and TS3 so even if they did announce TS5 people would still go ahead and buy up TS4 packs. Die hards keep playing. I don't think they have to worry about an announcement hurting the current packs or projects in the works.

Think about what they said about Simmers. They said the 'core' will buy anyway no matter what, they don't even think about them not buying. Drake said (and to a large extent it's true) they will buy no matter what, eventually, even with bugs, or if it's on sale or whatever, they will fork up the money, eventually. So, I don't think they are even or ever going to be concerned a new game announcement would 'hurt' TS4.

Just the opposite, more people would hurry up and buy that pack they have delayed in getting so they can get it all patched up before a game ended. Die hard fans don't stop buying. And TS4 has some die hard fans. No matter what, nor how bad or if they like a pack or not. Drake was right about all that.

2nd point the devil is in the details of this position description. Someone who can 'mentor' others with current IP and New IP.... It means yes, they are at least thinking of a new IP. Current IPs by Maxis could be TS4, The Sims Mobile and or FreePlay, but new IP is a new game. Now, new IP doesn't mean the same type games....such as The Sims but it says new IP. IP means a new game not a Sims game, or it would only saying existing IP which is The Sims franchise no matter if on pc, mobile etc. Point: It is more than likely it isn't a new Sim game but a different game of sorts or it wouldn't have referred to a new IP. When EA talks about a new IP they mean a totally new type of game...they don't mean a serial to EA sports and or an existing shooter game by EA. (What IP does Maxis own or build? The Sims no matter the format. What does new IP mean...a totally different franchise and game.) ETA: My point is this, maybe Maxis is thinking of branching out into a different intelletual property other than The Sims Franchise.

I had posted about the Unreal Engine features, but I hadn't mentioned that the last category on that page is "Developer Tools". All the tools look pretty useful! If the Unreal Engine is indeed what TS5 will be built with, then the devs can even look at the engine's source code and adapt it for their use in building TS5. They also have tools to help optimize the game!

There's more great features on the Unreal Engine Features page!

If it really is Sims 5 being planned. It doesn't look as if they are advertising for enough staff - unless several of the present crew are working on it. Many of them aren't posting current stuff anymore or off socialising on Twitter etc . I wonder which ones might have gone "over?"

I hope SimGuruGraham has gone over. He's my favorite! And I also hope the one who managed The Sims 3 Store had gone over too - @LeGardePourpre mentioned who it was once but I had forgotten. Also hoping for the SimGuru for TS3's Generations EP!

Well, I don't know. But New IP usually means a new product type not the same old thing. New property. They already have The Sims so new to me seems to me a new direction in gaming and not anything to do with 'Sims' because when EA announces (they did a few years ago) a new IP it never means the same type of game they already own.

    New IP means the following:

'It's a new intellectual property, as in not part of an ongoing intellectual property. IP means not only a new game but a new series. Examples from the past year: Brink, Bulletstorm

, mindjack etc. New IPs seem to usually come at the start of a console cycle or at the end.'

I strongly believe the successor to TS4 is still in its Pre-Production stage. Character concept art, game design, mechanics and overall aesthetics are being explored.

Unreal V won't be released until late 2021, but it's possible that Maxis will be prototyping with an earlier engine before entering full production using version V. This may be for a new Sims game or any other game.

What I'm mostly interested in, is the implementation of an AI system that supports Procedural Animation, a technique that was used in quite a complex manner in 'Spore'. It's a technique in which animation is programmed in such a way that it automatically generates real time movement, and simulates interactions that are too difficult to achieve using traditional animation techniques.

The Spore Creature Creator gives the player almost complete freedom in customization. When the creature is moved into the World, the animation generated will be affected based on whichever way the creature was built: If a creature is built with 2 legs, it will walk on 2 legs, if it is created with 4 legs, it will walk on four and so on.

With a newer engine, the coding of procedural animation may be less demanding, especially when creating a 'life' simulator such as the Sims.

In terms of a sims game, customization will come with endless possibilities, e.g. HEIGHT SLIDERS. The interaction with other sims or objects in the world won't cause clipping regardless of difference in height or size. Elements such as hair physics and collision detection could be generated much easier due to the application of procedural animation.

In my opinion, "TS5" can take as long as it needs in order to be become a satisfactory game.

That's a whole lot of wishful thinking and assumption, but I'd rather be realistic about it.

That is wishful thinking. To tell you the truth.I would keep buying sims 4 packs. Why knowing 5 was on the way.It still passed the time.

The interaction with other sims or objects in the world won't cause clipping regardless of difference in size. Elements such as hair physics and collision detection (I'm scowling at you, toddler in ball pit) could be generated much easier due to the application of procedural animation.

In my opinion, "TS5" can take as long as it needs in order to be become a satisfactory game.

They're already in the production phase. Art design is during production.

If they're using the Unreal Engine for TS5, then development doesn't need to take THAT long because the game engine is already built. Using the Unreal Engine as opposed to building it from scratch, which is what they had developed for all the previous iterations, vastly cuts the time it would normally take to create a new sim game.

But all the things you're hoping for, the customization, I think are possible with this game engine!

I"m in no rush for 5 but Sims news is always exciting for this old simmer. Can't agree on the slamming of 4 as I do enjoy it as I do the first three still but they are just opinions and everyone is entitled to one.

Guess I better start putting some of my pension aside and hope I am still kicking when the next one arrives. If that is what it is. Kinda fun to wait and see as well.

Yuck, that hyper realism look is no bueno for me. I hope they stick with the more cartoony look.
