Smelts are small fish caught through holes in the ice, in Great Lakes regions and also elsewhere, available fresh in Maine seasonally (during and right after ice-fishing season) and often served whole, breaded and pan-fried, for breakfast. And that "clean" snow is the polluted snow I was referencing.
I think that had to have happened at least once, can't think of anything specific though.
