The people saying that we shouldn't expect free downloads - and you say you have played since the beginning. There was, way back at the first a new item every week (I think it was Tuesday maybe Friday) in Sims 1 if you were on the forum. I remember getting awesome stuff if you preordered a pack.
Sims 4 also has made us purchase items that were base game in all the the previous games, I understand that yeah I paid money for this why is it free now. But I also bought the base game and it has been offered for free or cheap on occasion.
If they had offered some of the really cool hot tubs from Sims 2 or 3 it might have been better.
I am hoping that there will more but not going to hold my breath.
20 years of a game should have something extra special in the offering.

Those were the good old days of TS1 and TS2 <3 We got such awesome goodies, and may I add it was actually EXCITING when they would tell us what was coming up...
I miss those days and the ways they communicated to the fanbase.

The way it is now...is heartbreaking how it is now..and how people LET them do this....-sighs-

I really can't stand when people tell us to be grateful to a company, as if companies are doing any of us a favor. we're paying them not the other way around. The nerve to be told to be grateful to a company like Ea and with their bad reputation/history in the gaming community is absurd. With the short comings of sims 4, we have every right to get what was missing from the get go patched in. what people failed to get is that when it comes to this game, nothing is free. You had to buy this game just to get the updates/patches so you have already paid them in advance. Like seriously, stop acting like companies are your friends and that you can't critique them. It's no wonder why the gaming industry is the way it is now and why you're getting games like fallout 76, battlefield, etc.

Did you purchase Fallout 3? Skyrim? Fallout 4?

I like the hot tub, it’s cute, but I thought we’d get more than that.

Apparently there will always be someone who will be never satisfied. Peace.

I apreciate anything we get. Thanks to gurus for their effort. It means a lot. They create the game I absolutely adore <3 I can't wait to check it in my game.

Wild thought here, but we don't HAVE to be happy with everything we get when it's a game we pay hundreds of dollars a year for.

If you're happy great. A lot of us were expecting more for the big 20.

How much did you pay for this update?

    70 dollars.

I hate the mentality. I paid for the game. "they don't have to patch in things free for you, be grateful."

Yes they do, nobody would ever play this game if they didn't support it via patches.

The mentality that we're not allowed to be dissapointed with something without people jumping on you and saying "be grateful" is also ridiculous.

For the record, my expectations were pretty low. I only expected a new trait from a previous sims game or something similar like they did last time.

This isn't a charity case. It's literally their job to come out with content that attracts and keeps players, and this update has been a massive let down. I pay over a hundred dollars a year, so that's how much it costs.

They do support the game with new content, just like every other iteration. What we're talking about is that you wanted some free stuff for the anniversary. They gave you free stuff, but you wanted other free stuff. What seems to happen is that the community sets unreasonable expectations as far as free content goes and then gets all worked up when those expectations aren't met. Maybe it isn't the dev team's fault.

You may be right EA/Maxis did not have to give anything for the 20th anniversary and I hardly even play it anymore but some do not care about about free content and more about fixing the game from base game on up to the present pack and to date they only fix an little at an time and how old is Sims 4 again? I find it interesting that packs are being spit out faster than any patch that is released and the cost of fixing the base game to the present pack should not even come into the mix because people did spend money on the product and if the game is tweaked more often than an pack is released, people would be more acceptive. I am just amazed that Sims 4 has less features than Sims 2 and 3 and there are lot of complaints about bugs and all. Again, some want fixes more than an cheap shiny item and if people expect more more that is their opinion and wish even if it may not happen. Another thing recolors being sold in packs for me is bad for me it was an free feature once and now it is an option one must pay for now like the Neighborhoods which was created once upon an time by the customer and now you must pay.

Now we're talking about two different things. The customer is owed a working product, and so it is the responsibility of EA to make sure that there is a working product. But the customer is not owed free content. That's all bonus, and that's what we're talking about today -- people are worked up because the free content, to which they are not entitled, was not up to their expectations.

I think that there are a bunch of factors going on that have lead up to this particular feeling of disappointment.

First of all, in the past few articles I've read with developers and producers from Maxis and even Andrew Wilson the CEO, they continue to restate how they are listening to players' wishes and making their best efforts to comply with requests. And while that sentiment is certainly appreciated, there remain many specific highly requested things from players that have still, after almost five and a half years, not been offered or changed. And while we can say, sure, these things may very well come in the future, that people are just being impatient, it does stand to reason that the longer a request goes unfulfilled, the more excuses and explanations that come for why it was pushed back again, or complete silence remains on the matter altogether, it can be expected that this kind of non-activity will breed disappointment and distrust with its customers. There are no guarantees to what players will actually get or not get, and some people have, understandably, grown tired of the guessing games. Now, sure, as players we should all come to terms with the fact that the final control of the product and releases is entirely in command of the Sims studio, and we should be wary of spending our money accordingly. But the absolute truth is, the Sims 4 is probably the most expensive game out there, if you take into consideration owning all of the packs to complete the game. And yes, what we purchase is, again, optional, but the entire point of having expansions (including GPs and SPs) is to extend the incomplete base game and fill in the blanks where it falls flat. And this is done with our money. Lots of it. So a game that costs its players hundreds (or leading into thousands) of dollars should definitely be held accountable for delivering satisfactory content, especially when the publisher, EA, has such a bad reputation of doing things against player wishes in the name of "innovation" and revenue to please investors. So, what does this have to do with the anniversary?

Players on these forums have been talking about the 20th anniversary for years now. There has been constant speculation about what kind of celebration, what will be released, ideas ranging from re-releasing older games onto Origin, to base game content fixes, to revered objects, to the first whispers of Sims 5 or the franchise as a whole. And while I've seen people struggling to keep their expectations in check all the way up until today, there have still been many a hopeful thread filled with ideas and wishes and discussions on what the 20th means to us. Meanwhile, the devs have, on their end, been talking about the anniversary a lot since last year, feeding softly into the expectations of the community and leading people to believe that something special will be done to celebrate.

So although I'm a supporter of the "keep expectations low" mantra regarding patched content, I also have to question why, if Maxis is so engaged with the community and wish-fulfillment, weren't they aware of the excitement and expectations of their players and prepared to offer something a little more special for PC?

In my speculation, it's coming down to a realization that the Sims 4 must be improperly funded. With EA being so determined to keep costs low and revenue high (as they mention in almost every quarterly report), the game is not getting the attention it needs, and the developers are cut off from having the freedom to produce an exceptional game with acceptable content worth the price we are paying. Today's patch is demonstrable of this - a recycled "hero object" gameplay item from a previously released Stuff Pack with a new skin. I'm sorry, but this time, I think players have a good reason to feel let down.

EA. Don't proclaim all over the internet that you are listening to the players and working hard to fulfill our wishes and then turn your backs on expectations that were years in the making. And while I can't say that I'm truly "upset" about this, as I keep my gaming entertainment perspective in check, I do think it was a poor taste decision and I am definitely disappointed that they really dropped the ball today. It's time to kick the corporates in the bum to cough up some more funding for this game or do something to bring about some positive change because this "celebration" bombed and it's going to take a lot moving forward from here to restore some of that faith.

Hear hear...heck, you know what I would have LOVED? Something JUST like TS2 UC BUT It's TS1 released on origin like TS1 UC...I would LOVE to play the old game again now made for newer systems...I would have HONESTLY adored this.

Totally agree. I'd love an update to the Sims 1 and 2. I own the Sims 2 UC but it's hard to play on Windows 10 and I'd really like to go back and revisit what I loved so much in the first place.

I´m really sorry for all Sims 4 players, this update is a bad joke, in my view.
But it´s the 20th anniversary: I little hoped that they managed to make EVERY Sims player happy this day! They´ve got so many hints and whishes what we wanted or hoped for!
They haven´t listen at all, again!

When I heard about the free hot tub, I hoped it would be plain and with nothing above, for placing it indoor. But now I realize the roof construction is good as in making it less stupid when sims ddecide to use the tub on a rainy day outdoors. My sims often use the pool during a rainy day by free will.

I agree with the above post by missy. I should probably just keep my mouth shut but I don't feel like we're being fair to the team. I know people have Dissapointments with this game in general but we were not promised anything for free. And imagine how Dissapointed the gurus feel that they are trying to have fun with us and celebrate (show me another game that does that) and give us free stuff and we're treating them badly and throwing tantrums as missy stated. On the anniversary when we should be happy and sharing fun stories with eachother. Like seriously? 🙈🙈
Final Fantasy Online to mention just one.

Not free. FFXIV has a monthly subscription fee. If I was paying $13 per month to play The Sims, in adding to the cost of packs, then I'd expect more than a free hottub. But I'm not.

I've been thinking exactly this for the last few days. We literally CHOSE To buy and play this game. It's not like they forced us. They are being generous to give us ANYTHING for free. I appreciate whatever we get. But that's just my thought on the matter. 🙂

The sims 4 is a live service format, free patches are a mandatory requisite of live services.

For comparison, most mmo's are live service. They typically have an expansion pack every year or two, or a monthly subscription fee. Then they have numerous free patches with a lot of content to keep people entertained in between paid content.

I think one of the issues with this, is that the bar had already been set at a higher standard due to what Simmers received on previous anniversaries. If they had always done little to no celebration, we wouldn't expect much more than that for this anniversary as well. Sure they didn't have to give us anything, but when they've already set the bar at a certain (potentially higher) standard, it's difficult not to compare the two. Will I still use the hot tub? Most likely. Even though in some ways it made sense for them to go bigger for a bigger milestone, I feel the least they could have done is keep it on par with past anniversaries.

Full confession, I skimmed the last 2 pages because it’s just back and forth of the usual variety.

I’m not sure WHY they chose that particular swatch to show off the new hot tub... it looks like some sort of flying saucer/merri-go-round mash-up and tacky. But if there’s one thing that hasn’t changed about the Sims since day 1, it’s the questionable fashion and design sense of the Sims Universe. 😂

The normal swatches are kinda nice and the roof reminds me of previous iterations of the Sims, where hottubbing in a thunderstorm could be deadly.

Thank you, Devs, for reminding me of good times past! And for the new hot tub model (and yes, even the tackier swatches)!

And as console player this iteration, thanks for giving us bug fixes first! It’s nice to feel superior for a change (even if artificially so) 😂🤣

Now, back to your regularly scheduled “debate”

I actually like many of the swatches of the new hot tub. Not the one they chose for the picture, but a lot of the others. I will probably use it because it will probably look cute with some of the romantic garden stuff. I do own patio stuff, but I don't really like the look of either of the two designs that came with it for a lot of my lots, so I'm happy to have a third option. It doesn't bother me so much that other people can now use that gameplay, because for one thing that means that in the future they can release new hot tub designs in new packs, hopefully including in-ground versions. And with more users having access to hot tubs, there will be more demand for the problems they have to be fixed. Most items or systems that are introduced with a specific pack never get further development because it would only be for people who own that pack.

On the other hand, I had wished for something more, or at least more iconic. They did recently allow beds to be upgraded to vibrate, didn't they? So adding the heart shaped bed, which would reference the previous games, would have been so much more meaningful than a hot tub with plumbobs on the least attractive swatches it comes with. Or really anything that was a throwback to the original game. I didn't need a massive overhaul of the system for the anniversary, but a less random free gift would have been nice.

Im really disappointed that they chose to celebrate the 20th anniversary with a new model instead of picking something iconic/nolstigic. Had they brought this item in for Ts4's birthday, I would not care in the slightest because that would be more for Ts4 and not the franchise as a whole. The 16th anniversary was great cause they brought back the Tragic Clown(Ts1), Grilled Cheese aspiration(Ts2), and the kleptomaniac trait(Ts3). It's sad to see that they chose to continue to disrespect the franchise like this.
    Uh hello, Based Department?

It's not a tantrum, it's built up disappointment.

My point is though, the Devs are under no obligation to deliver anything for the 20th and the amount of insults they get from this community, I wouldn't have blamed them one iota if they hadn't, to be really honest with you. They promised nothing and yet they still get hate for what they did offer.

If a child tells its parent it wants the toy from the shop and the parent doesn't buy it for the child, the child will mostly likely shout, stamp its feet and probably scream about how unfair the parent is...a tantrum.

This community, as a whole, acts no differently regardless of what the developers do. They release a patch with dozens of bug fixes and this community hones in on one or two things that weren't featured.

Tantrum: an uncontrolled outburst of anger and frustration, typically in a young child.

So yeah, actually it is a tantrum to be brutally honest. I know people aren't going to like hearing that but then I don't particularly like the constant waves of negativity within this community these days. It's a shame because the Sims community used to be so lovely. <3

The only reason why The Sims franchise reached 20 successful years, is because us players willingly and consistantly gave our money to support the life span this game has. You're probably right, they don't owe us anything, but we the players are the reason this game is still around today, so I apologize if I expected something more than a reskinned object (that many already spent money for) for this milestone that we the players are essentially responsible for.

I will add on, I'm usually the first one to defend the developers of this game, I think they do a great job for the most part. Sims 4 is my favourite out of the series for a reason, that being said I'm not upset at the developers, I think we all know who's really to blame here. The developers only work with what they are given, and clearly they weren't given anything substantial to make this incredible milsetone of 20 years a proper celebration of that achievement.

Funny. Could’ve sworn they’ve been calling the Sims 4 a live service for a while now, considering they promised frequent updates with bug fixes and new content and the fact that the game is the longest running version in the series with a few years left...

Certainly not every publisher owes us free content, but Maxis promised they would provide it. That’s on them. People are allowed to call them out on that if they feel their standards haven't been met, and they definitely don’t have to be grateful for it. You said it yourself, they’re a business not a charity. They didn’t give us the base game and packs free of charge, we all bought into this franchise with hundreds if not thousands of dollars.

Simmers are allowed to complain. It’s okay if you don’t agree with them, but arguing semantics, calling people tantrum throwing children (I’m sure we’re all adults here), or hiding your shaming other simmers for expressing their disappointment behind smiley faces and heart emojis is uncalled for.

I haven't called anyone any names, nor have I used the word 'tantrum' or any synonym. I also never stated anything about being thankful. What I am saying is and has been as follows -- we are not owed free content. At all.

Regarding the Sims 4 as a live service....it actually is. This was clarified a few years ago by SimGuruGraham here:

    https://forums.thesims.com/en_US/discussion/893117/live-service-explained/p1

He does mention that ongoing free content is a part of that. There is even a team dedicated to it.
