The Homes in Literature Build Challenge

Welcome to The Homes in Literature Build Challenge! Each Month, a new home from Classic, or even sometimes newer Literature will be featured, for you to recreate, based upon known drawings, descriptions and Blueprints/Floor Plans, where applicable. You will be supplied with links to information, to be able to recreate these homes, to the best of your ability. The links provided will merely be a starting point to launch your creative process and you may, of course, find your own resources along the way.

Some of these homes are and will be based upon real locations. Some will have been recreated in life by enthusiasts. Some will simply have artistic renderings to go on. For those homes, based on true historical structures and for those based upon Artistic renderings, you will be free to recreate the home of the artists style or a specific point in time of your choosing.

The Homes in Literature Build Challenge #7: Generic Alien World or Futuristic Architectural Build

With the advent of the new Star Wars pack, I thought we could have some fun with Sci-Fi. The genre is packed with different ideas about what life on other planets, and even the future of this planet will look like.

Choose one of those visions for your build. You can build a home in the Star Wars Universe, or any number of different settings in the thousands upon thousands of different Sci-Fi novels out there.

You can even choose some cutting edge architects, that are out there now, who are trying to reshape the world with new types of architecture, that many would consider futuristic, like Vincent Callebaut, in Paris.

Lot Challenge: Build me a home, set in another world, or a future time on planet Earth.

Room Challenge: Choose the room you are most proud of in your home, that you feel that really represents the ideals of what you feel the future will hold for mankind, or alienkind.

Sims Challenge: What does your future family look like, based upon the designs and values you have set forth in your home?

I look forward to seeing your creations!

Please use the whole of hashtag #LiteraryBuildChallenge7 when you upload your creations. Any build, room or household without this hashtag will not be considered for Maxis Fave nomination.

The deadline for this challenge is Saturday, October 17th , 2020 ** [no later than 23:59:59 EDT/New York Time]

What a lovely challenge! <3 The first one is simply exquisite.

I think you can´t get a Maxis curate if the house is a recreation though.

    Bookmarked.

Ah...I should have thought of that. Well, I'll submit anyways. I've seen stranger things happen. lol

My understanding was that they couldn't feature stuff based on something under copyright, but this is well into public domain. Fingers crossed!

Either way, we build for the joy of building. I believe you are correct, however. Even still, after many months of looking through blueprints from several different creators online, I can match the new blueprints to more than one build that was curated.

@Taoron love this idea! I read all the Little Women books over and over but it’s got be 20 years (at least!) since I picked them up......think you might be supplying me with a reading list as well as a build challenge haha! Even thinking about it I’m remembering how much I loved Jo and wanted to shake Amy in the beginning, so if nothing else thank you for bringing great memories back :) I tend to avoid movies of books that I love because it never matches what’s in my head so I’ll probably avoid looking at the links in case they make me mad - who knows what I’ll come up with?? Time to raid Assistant Designer’s book shelves!

@AliSim19 LOL I'm with you 100% (I finished it recently and now in the Jane Eyre.) I loved Jo and had little tollerance for Amy at the start. I wept for Beth, over and over. I did grow to tollerate Amy, while still loving Jo and weeping for Beth, to the end. I also refuse to see the movies, because I don't want to destroy the visions in my head.

The home is based upon Alcott's actual home, which is now a museum. All of the links are safe, as they are just the house. One, I believe is of the 1994 movie set house, but it looked to me that they did an amazing job. One of two of the sites also show the home at different time periods, over the past century or so. I know there are basic floor plans in one, so a lot of the design and building will be based on that, guess work, knowing the book or further research.

I am especially looking forward to seeing what people do with Jo's little writing room, as well as the parlor.

@Taoron oh Jane Eyre, excellent choice! I read that about once a year....maybe 18 months at a push. And although I’ve never actually visited the house that is supposed to have inspired Thornfield Hall I’m up walking in North Yorkshire quite a lot and have such a clear picture of it in my head! Not sure if I’d have the skill to translate it into S4 though haha.
Hopefully I can use this challenge to push Assistant Designer to read Little Women.....she’s on the 4th time through Black Beauty in 2 years but the poor Marches have just been sat gathering dust....fingers crossed 😊

I'm 50, and this was my first time. I had lunch with a friend and theater director I admire, the other day and after commenting that I had just read Little Woman, now reading Jane Eyre and then Wuthering Heights, he commented that I'm going through all of the chick classics. LOL Hey...if it's good, it's good. One cannot live on Shakespeare alone.

It's such a good book and I'm betting that once she starts it, she won't be able to put it down.

There are a few buildings I was looking at in Jane Eyre, including Gateshead and Lowood. Might be a lot to take on for most folks. I may revisit Little Women again for this, at some point, to do Meg's Dovecote. Heck, we even have the Lawrence home and the Aunt's home. (as the boys home/school) Lots of possibilites.

Hi @Taoron --- I wish I could enter your very nice challenge, but I can't get anything in by Monday. I love the book "Little Woemen!" I'm hoping to enter the next challenge that you do :).

Well, I have an exterior I like. I'm intentionally leaving off the chimneys since they mess with the gallery view. Hopefully I will have a chance to figure out the interior this weekend. I am alternating between this build and an attempt at an ultra modern gingerbread house.

    Okay, here's my house.

    BUILD ENTRY FORM
LITERARY BUILD CHALLENGE - 1 Orchard House
    FORUM ID: Wendyology
    ORIGIN ID: Wendyology

ENTRY DETAILS: I found some good reference for the exteriors, but not much for the interior so I went for a generally Victorian feel. Chimneys were intentionally left off the roof because it the gallery view with them on didn't show the house. Also, gameplay versus realism, there are probably more bathrooms than would be historically accurate (I didn't have time to look up plumbing availability in the 1860's!)

    The family just moved in.
