I think a modern version of that game would be great!

    Shame it was cancelled!

I was watching for this game in 2000/ 2001 but they chose to focus more on The Sims with Hot Date being released which was the earliest attempt at getting our Sims out of the house.

I mean can you believe that originally Sims where always stuck at home unless they went to work or school and you could not follow them?

They could do it as different steps
City Mode - Create your dream city. In this mode you can create terraform the world, design the streets, lot size placements,
Build mode - Create your Homes, Venues as we do.
Live mode - Play your character's stories in the world you created.

That sounds like my idea in this thread name How Do You Imagine TS5 but it's more like a simplified version of SimCity. I think they should have a perfect balance between Sims and World in TS5 so that both type of players would be satisfied

oh man those forums are so long i dont read every comment but im glad there's others out there that agree!

it would be really cool to be able to have some of the aspects from simcity in the game. i never played it myself but i've been playing cities skylines lately and man some things would be amazing to have incorporated.

Will Wright tried that years ago - it was called Simsville - but it didn't work out. You can still see info about it on the net - just look up Simsville - but it ended up being dropped. Many of us were really excited about it and followed everything Will reported about it and it's progress - but finally they had to stop the production as the cost was astronomical and it had so many issues it was just not a product they could continue with or so they said at the time - so it was pulled and Will Wright let us know it was not going to happen.

here is one of the trailers we had:

Here was gamespot when it was cancelled:

    What Simville was about:

The game didn't cost astronomical numbers. The thing is that maxis was a small company back then, and they choose to apply the money to produce the Expansion Packs and Bug Fixes for Sims 1. I think that it can be made today, there are even bigger games out there.

yeah my concern is definitely what this video hit upon, i still want to be able to micromanage my sims and play out their lives if i want to. but i also want to be able to build their world and play with the world at large if i want to as well.

thats what i like about the sims series is that its so open and a massive sandbox that what i feel like doing, i can do. i can build or go into cas or play with the sims. and the only thing really missing is the world at large. i'd love to be able to mess around with that too.

and the ability to do a world on that scale has been shown to be doable because of sims 3, its just the question of "would we be able to allow the player to edit this world dynamically and in real time". and how would the world budget work.

Yes, just like we would be seeking for a full Sims game (being able to micromanage our sims lives), a bunch of people would be seeking for a full SImcity game (being able to fully manage the city). But i could see ways of making that work. Paradoz Interactive has a series of different strategy games that interconnect and you can play from a small kingdom to a full intergalactic empire (not like spore, each stage is an entire complex game and you can choose when you want to port your save to the next "level"). I used to love that, back in the day, we could c reate a city in Simcity 4 and use it in Sims 2, but EAxis need to be more courageous to do something like that.

I watched this on Youtube and was reading the comments below. Did you see the one by someone called Mike Sellers?

[I was at Maxis at the time, leading SimCity Online (never released -- it became The Sims 2). /i].................

He was a lead designer on Sims 2

Microsoft is doing this with FS2020. The game is reputedly so big gamers have to play it off a server where all the maps are located and the scenery loads bit by bit. The FS2020 world is a massive open world that is intended to allow flight simulator pilots to fly anywhere within that open-world without lag. If EA wants to do an amalgam between Simcity and Sims then they will have to go down this route in ordr to make it feasible to have such a massive scale world run smoothly.

Simsville can happen today. They made a business decision to keep them separate, and at the time it was the right decision. With Simcity now canned and The Sims is just a repeat of what has been done before TS5 as an advanced and better version of Simsville is the way to go. I personally prefer lots of building, with interconnecting worlds with a lil bit of Sims play so that meets my needs. However, folks who want to just have a massive city focused and developing Sims legacy it would work for them too.

So yeah, ya got my vote.

Yes! I used to play SimTown as a kid and always thought it would be fun to be not only build the town, but also control my citizen Simmies. I think I even wrote a letter on WordPerfect and printed it out on my dot matrix printer and sent it to Maxis. A few years later The Sims came out 😂😂😂

No. Not at all my cup of tea because it sounds way too ambitious and further straying from the original formula. I don't want a world focus, I want a Sims focus. I'd much rather that they put more development effort into unique behaviors and the original psychology of The Sims so that the actual gameplay is solid. The game is called "The Sims" for a reason. It needs to be, first and foremost, about the actual Sims. The environment comes after.
Opposed to now where half of the budget is being spent on creating ugly worlds we might as well call it "Worlds" now. If the game started out with a CAW tool that makes making worlds easier for the team and for players that opens up options for the players to be creative and make the game their own the Sims should be a sandbox and for the team as the expansions come in they don't have to spend all their time on making worlds from scratch. No matter what worlds are being made and taking up development time why not have some effort put in so they impact the behaviors of our Sims as you said that was important to you.

Also we do not have Sims like you describe now and still no world creation tool. The Sims are horrible because we're dealing with a game that spent the majority of its early development time as an online game and had a year and a half to turn around and become the mess we have now lets put blame where it belongs. Had Sims 4 had a whole 4+ years in development as an offline game we most likely would not be dealing with the issue of no Sim personalities now.

Sims 4 went from "You Rule" to "One of the stories we want you to tell"
