Things we miss from The Sims 3 in The Sims 4

Something I would LOVE to have is attic spaces/being able to use the space underneath roofs for building. I think it would be cool for storage, or maybe to make a Sim child who is hated by their family and has to live up there.

I don't think open world is really the problem honestly. I love the open world but I also played sims 2 and love it just as much as I love sims 3. Sims 2 to me did seem empty and while I do find constant loading screens to be annoying I think its more so they aren't using the loading screens to their full compacity. Sims 4 doesn't seem as empty as Sims 2, but not as populated as Sims 3 (since only about 20 sims are allowed on an active area at a time)

Take diving lots for example with Sims 3: routing was a plum because of the open world and the map makers not being given enough time to finalize the map before release, whereas sims 4 with Island living as an example, a diving lot was more than possible... There are open spaces between lots in the neighborhood, (which after getting used to is decent compromise tho not one I want to see continue into Sims 5) The Loading screens for each lot were supposed to cure the issues open world brought with Sims 3. Even if diving was still tied to a buoy they could have used that as a trigger to get to a 'hidden' diving lot, where you could find collectibles, befriend a mermaid, fight a Kraken, same with the cave on the island have it be a trigger for the diving lot.

To me, Sims 4 seems to be missed opportunity after missed opportunity. Not to say Sims 3 was perfect by any means, but they seemed to have missed fewer opportunities than sims 4, but then again I wasn't on the forums when Sims 3 was in its prime, and maybe back then players were pointing out ways gameplay could have been better.

But on topic with the post I really miss the traits having an impact on sims, I'm sure this has been said before but heres a comparason of the evil trait in 3 vs the one in 4:
    Sims 3
    1. Sim will get a "Fiendishly Delighted" moodlet when misfortune strikes nearby Sims!
    2. Sim doesn't mind a lack of light, a dark lair is welcome!
    3. Sim will excel in the criminal career track.
    4. Sim will fare well in most fights.
    5. Evil Sims cruelly enjoy harassing other Sims when misfortune strikes them, such as mocking a Sim who died known to the other Sim, or teasing a Sim for not reaching the toilet in time. Other Evil Sims and Mean Spirited Sims, however, enjoy listening to the mocking.
    6. In The Sims 3: Showtime, an Evil Sim can ask the genie for World Misery instead of World Peace like Sims without the Evil trait.
    7. If mermaids[TS3:IP] have the Evil trait, they have the special ability to Summon Sharks.
    8. If witches from The Sims 3: Supernatural have the evil trait, they can summon poisoned apples by command, whereas regular witches can choose to summon normal apples and only summon a poisoned one by accident.
    9. An Evil Sim will always laugh when mourning a dying Sim who wasn't of much importance or was their enemy, but will cry if the Sim who has died was part of their household or was their friend. Regardless, witnessing a dying Sim will give them the "Fiendishly Delighted" moodlet for a few hours. Evil Sims also gain a slight Fun boost from watching non-friends and non-household members die.
    10. The Sim can steal candy from newborns and toddlers. Stealing candies may cause Sims to slowly gain weight.
    11. Other Sims will be cautious around evil Sims once the trait is discovered, Good Sims or Sims in the Law Enforcement career track especially so.
    12. The Sim can donate to undermine charities once a day by clicking on the mailbox.
    13. The Sim can do many things with an evil twist, such as "Wash Hands with Evil Soap", or "Do Evil Dance." However, it doesn't have any impact in gameplay.
    14. The Sim has a keen interest in death, as they will often have wishes to visit the graveyard, see a ghost, or see the ghost of a living Sim. Usually the wish to see a ghost of a living Sim appears when the Evil Sim and the opposing Sim aren't getting along very well.
    15. Evil Sims and Mean Spirited Sims tend to get along, unless the Mean Spirited Sim has the Good Trait.
    16. Sometimes when walking into a room, an Evil Sim will rub his or her hands together and laugh maniacally.
    17. Evil Sims are immune to the Creepy Graveyard moodlet, and aren't scared of vampires, or bugs. Evil Sims will still be disturbed by ghosts, unless they have another trait like Brave, Party Animal or Daredevil alongside it.
    18. Evil Sims can "Shakedown" other Sims for money[TS3:SN].
    19. Originally, a bug allowed Evil Sims to get the "Fiendishly Delighted" moodlet from their own suffering or minor instances of suffering such as exposing sims to a gross environment or having low hygiene. It has been fixed in previous patches.
    20. Evil Sims never get the Upset moodlet when fighting with a friend or family member, instead they will wish to see their ghost.
    21. Evil Sims have trouble befriending Unicorns, and the relationship between the Evil Sim and the Unicorn will decay faster.
    22. While Evil Sims would usually cheer when they are nearby a Sim who is the Emperor of Evil, Evil Sims who also have the Friendly or Family-Oriented traits will still be angry with the Emperor and boo them. They share this with Mean Spirited Sims who can have the Good or Family-Oriented traits.
    23. Evil Sims will autonomously "Shoo Off" cats sitting on furniture, even if the cat is asleep.
    24. Evil Sims often wish to befriend other Evil Sims upon discovering that they both share the Evil trait.
    25. Evil Sims tend to talk maliciously when gossiping about other Sims' misfortune around the neighborhood. They share this with Mean Spirited and Inappropriate Sims.
    26. Evil Sims strongly benefit from undertaking a Business major while studying at college.[TS3:UL]
    Sims 4
    1. These Sims may laugh maniacally.
    2. Happy Evil
    3. Have the "Discuss Evil Plans" interaction with other evil Sims.
    4. Will have the "Good v.s. Evil" moodlet when interacting with a good Sim.
    5. Will have the "Near Misery" moodlet when a Sim has negative moodlets.
    6. Will have the "Dismiss Goodness" interaction with a good Sim.
    7. Evil Sims can also smash dollhouses even when currently not angry.
    8. Will laugh at pets when they misbehave.[TS4:C&D]

I mean all the traits do is affect their emotion but it doesn't really seem to affect their autonomous behavior or what whims come up. And sure there were some traits that had less affect on sims such as book worm:
    Sims 3 Bookworm
    1. Bookworms can read faster than other Sims.
    2. They have more fun reading than other Sims.
    3. Sims can write higher quality novels than other Sims.
    4. Teenage and child Sims can finish their homework 27.8% faster.
    5. Provides a bonus to Sims writing in the Vaudeville genre.
    6. NPCs with this trait are attracted to the following lot assignments: Library and Bookstore.
    7. Bookworms can join a Book Club and receive a new book every Wednesday for a one-time fee.
    8. Bookworms prefer watching the history channel on the television.
    9. Bookworm Sims get environmental boosts from being in a room containing a bookcase.
    10. Bookworm Sims will gain skills faster while reading skill books.
    11. Bookworm Sims will write faster than other Sims.
    12. Bookworm Sims will tend to read books autonomously more often than other sims.
    13. Very handy if career involves Political, Medical, or stay-at-home author.
    14. Bookworm Sims are inclined to accept gifts earlier in a relationship if it's a book.
    15. Bookworms strongly benefit from undertaking a Communications major while studying at college.[TS3:UL]
    Sims 4 Bookworm
    1. Bookworm Sims can analyze a book which will give a inspired moodlet for 4 hours.
    2. Bookworm Sims can "Discuss Favorite Authors" and "Latest Book" with other Sims.

I miss Sims being able to dance together, I miss Sims being able to cuddle on the bed and sleep spooned together in bed. I miss dog houses. I miss dogs being able to sleep on the bed. I miss snow depth. There are many things, but those are just the ones that pop into my head at this moment.

Some of the items I truly miss have already been mentioned but:

I REALLY miss eating like a family. You can set the table, but you can't serve the meal?!
Babies being more than objects. I adored washing them in the sink. Let us take them for stroller walks and sims walking by can react to seeing a baby.
B I K E S. We have the ability to wander, why can't we have our children ride a bike around the neighbourhood?

I think cars could work. I am not a fan for the 'teleporting' randomly. I would like if they added cars with an animation of them pulling out of the driveway and vanishing. Carpooling to work and school. I loved my teens driving my kids to school. Teaching them how to drive was so fun! Even if it's a rabbit hole event, (like volunteer work) it was still very fun and there could be little pop ups (Should you hit the brakes or risk running the yellow?) and richer sims can just go to a driving school (again, rabbit hole like volunteer work). I REALLY miss the bus ): It would be so cute to get calls " They were throwing things on the bus " ect.
This will be odd: robbers? It was so funny to see them breaking in and the dogs can help chase them off.

There are other tiny things I've missed that I (believe) were mostly tiny things in sims 2. Such as:
Slow dancing, dancing with children on your feet. Running up to hug parents when they came home. TODDLERS EATING DOG FOOD. Not sure if they can still do this?

Things I HAVEN'T seen that might be nice:
Toddler phases, (the why stage, the mine stage. Kids have them, why not toddlers? Terrible two phase!!)
Teen events. We had them slightly in 3 with prom, but I was thinking prom, finals, summer break, things like that. children-teens should totally have summer break, I think that would be so fun, but I know it would only really work with the seasons pack. It would make them 'growing up' feel more realistic. I assume this can be done with the 'holiday' system, but imagine the cute buffs! Lazy teens, excited kids, and stressed moodlets from finals.

There are so many more but I've rambled enough lmao

I miss all of these things soooooo much, this just made me so sad

These threads are the reason I can't wait to get into sims 3 after I purchase all the expansions. I get emotional just reading it because you guys are naming all of the things I ever wanted in the sims 4. :'( and still hope for but after so many years I'm thinking we might never get those little meaningful details.
Zombies, oh please oh please give us zombies!! :'(

I miss a lot but these are the ones that stand out

    Cars..even teaching teens to drive

    Apartments anywhere I want

Ocean swimming ANYWHERE even before island paradise.

Seasonal festivals. I really loved that. It really made the sims have a sense of community.

Loved some of my broke sims could go wash their clothes at the laundromat.

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, I MISS MOST.....DANCING FACE TO FACE AND SLOW DANCING. I cannot believe this is still not in the game

I occasionally post little infographics based on things I miss from The Sims 3 or previous games in general. The point is, they're part of a bigger collection. If I listed everything then it'd come out like this. This screenshot is an unreadable version as it's not finished yet. This is also only half of what's currently done.

Once you start looking at what's missing it just goes on and on and on. I could probably include a lot of points from people in this thread to make it larger still.

I don't want Sims 4 to be a copy of Sims 3 myself but you all have given Maxis a reason to prolong Sims 4 for several more years! :)

It's not about The Sims 4 being a copy of any previous game, it's more about how depth that was present in earlier games and carried forward was suddenly dropped for 4. Like the gender preference system - it was in 2, developed further for 3, and isn't even in 4 to any degree. They just dropped it. Most of the points on there are elements of baseline quality that spanned 1, 2 and 3. 4 is missing so much of that and that's where you start getting complaints.

I don't want 4 to be a copy of previous games either. I do, however, want it to have at least a third as much depth. Seeing as it's been five years, however, I'm quite sure that it's too late for any of that to be added, they'd have to do an overhaul of the base game and that would in turn mean an overhaul of how every pack works. Can't see this team doing that when they can't add much smaller ideas like cars of spiral staircases.

Let us know when a better-resolution (and readable) version is done.
Also, one point: TS3 had a lot of side content that was not an official pack but was a cash grab anyway - I remember worlds (which were the price of TS4 GP and probably should be counted as a DLC for this reason) and venues. TS4 sticks to 3 types of packs and the DLC count is not growing as much since the initial flow of stuff packs in 2015-2016 faded.
Yes, TS4 started in a bad state (no toddlers, very few careers, traits still have very low impact compared to TS3) but did TS3 have features added during its lifecycle the way it is these months with TS4? (freelancer patch, holiday pack with continuous additions each year, improved stair tools now, gardening and fishing updates even without a DLC) And that's not to mention TS3 was running very poorly with a few DLCs - massive save/load times and save files in GBs.
I am not dismissing the concerns/shortcomings of TS4 as there still are several issues and missing features but I don't think is as bad as some people say - and that TS3 had a lot of issues too.
    ----
I don't understand the obsession with cars, especially as you can travel anywhere on the push of a button. Yes, it'd be a touch of realism but I'd rather see them work on something with more impact than to be just a decoration.
As for spiral stairs - that might not be as simple as it looks. Keep in mind that TS3 had fixed wall height and so it could be just a simple object. TS4 has three possible wall height and making spiral stairs flexible enough to work with this (let alone if you wanted to stack them on floors with different wall height) might not be as easy as people would wish it to be.
I like fantasy and a bit of Sci-Fi. Want to know what I'm reading?
I also like wandering the hills.

Make three different stair heights and make them stackable. Or, create stairs that can be extended, like the stairs that are present in the game now. Those are two solutions that I hope that they are working on or, at least, considering.

As for the TS3 store selling worlds at expansion prices, TS4 is basically doing the same thing. See: Sulani, San Myshuno, and Windenburg. Most of the time, when TS4 gets a new world, the world is usually the biggest feature. Everything else is secondary. Pets is the only exception that comes to mind. Any expansion that has truly substantive, game-changing features released without a world. See: Seasons.

TS3 did have long save times because it had a lot of information to process and to save. TS4 doesn't have that issue. NPCs do nothing in TS4 other than walk around and talk, always talking. TS3 NPCs lived independent lives and the game needed to keep track of that.

Back to the original question: I'd really, really like a picnic basket again. That has been in every previous game, I think? Certainly, it has been in TS2 and TS3. I would like to have a picnic scene. However, I really don't feel like scouring the web for poses or making my own. I'm getting really tired of pretending. :/

Sims 3 being a cash grab is not related to the subject here, since nobody denies that. That only concerned the pricing by the way, not the way they offered it. I was totally fine having to buy worlds through the Store, I just wasn’t very happy with what it cost me. And remember almost every EP came with a world so you didn’t need to buy those worlds. It was luxury, not a necessity to be able to play in other worlds than just Sunset Valley and Riverview.

The point people are trying to make here is that Sims 4 is older than the previous games by now and it still doesn’t have as much to offer. They checked off many of the themes, but with less gameplay, less options, less depth in many cases. And the biggest problem is the fact the same goes for the basegame, the frame of the game. The foundation.

Only being able to travel by clicking a button is the problem for many players. That exactly defines it actually. It’s more than just decoration I assure you. Cars being just decoration in Sims 4 is what frustrates people. Cars weren’t just decoration in neither Sims 2 nor Sims 3 (be it in different ways).

ETA: “And that's not to mention TS3 was running very poorly with a few DLCs.”
As for bugs: so does Sims 4 apparently. And as for performance, I can honestly say I never had that problem.

Oddly enough, I miss having to replant my plants.

Like, getting a normal plant up a level, waiting for it to bear fruit of a better quality (because you loved your plant), replanting the fruit for a higher level plant, and onwards and upwards...

It was fun and exciting, going out into the garden and getting a higher level fruit from your plant. The process was more involved than the sparkle effect thing we have now.
