Off the Grid - Tips & Tricks Compilation!

I'm wondering if finding the workarounds was meant to be gameplay, or the teams didn't have a clue what to do with the lot trait once they decided to add it to the upate. After spending fifteen hours, of my time, playing around with one Sim on an off the grid lot, I gave up. Searching for workarounds and dealing with fires that no Sim can extinguish, almost every Sim day, aren't my idea of gameplay. I was excited when I learned about the new lot trait, but after spending hours doing basically nothing but struggle while trying to sort out the 'why this works but that doesn't' and 'why was this included but doesn't work' nonsense, I finally changed the lot trait to something else. And it will probably never be fixed. Just one more idea that was poorly researched and not properly executed in any way that makes sense. We play a life simulation game that is part fantasy and partially based on reality. But the reality portion in that equation has been lost somewhere along the way. It is buried under a bunch of bugs and glitches and ideas that sound really good in theory, but seldom work as intended. Then we have to use mods and workarounds to fix the problems on our own. If the teams are coming up with all these new ideas, that are supposed to expand on gameplay, why don't they take some time to flesh out those ideas before releasing them in updates and packs? What we were told about this new lot trait and what it is in reality once you have played it, are not the same at all. It was a lame attempt at creating new gameplay is the best I can say about it.

I’ve been keeping several of the “Waterfall in a Bottle” portable showers in each of my sim’s inventories— available from the Buy Debug catalogue if you don’t want to go to Selvadorada.

I have play tested and figured out the extinguish self in shower and extinguish self is ocean do not work on off grid lot

Oh, that's just crazy! You don't need electricity to run into the ocean!

    @Patient0

The nylon shower from Outdoor Retreat seems to be the best one to use on the Off grid lots, I don’t think they get the brackish water moodlet from it

No, I just meant the thinking process that must have gone awry. I love this game, but every time they fuss with it, something else gets broken, and sometimes what was fixed is no longer fixed. :open_mouth:

My sims have been able to grill food and store in the fridge off the grid to keep longer. They can't cook food directly from the fridge, but it still helps keep it fresh.

I just discovered there is no Off-Grid Trait in the neighborhood I chose for my ancestral save. :'( That bites.

I found the Salvadorado "outhouse/shower" in the buydebug for free works great on off the grid lot. And kind of fits in with the theme. Still wish for handpump sink and well.

@Bluegayle that is interesting because the regular outhouse toilets like you would find at a playground do not work on the off grid lot. I will try that one instead, thank you

Can you screenshot this? Never heard of it but I’m interested.

Sorry a long shower lol but I did watch the hygiene go up to just make sure. Gotta love walking through a wall of flies and the first thing you do right outside the outhouse is dig for shells. :o

Ohhh, you know I’ve never used any of those bathrooms on a residential lot before.

Me neither but when i saw it in debug I thought it fit nicely & no tepid shower. With moo you could attach some kind of tarp/tank and say it captures the rainwater during monsoon. I didnt try any of the others because they weren't free.

How is that possible? We were told this lot trait would be available in all the worlds, not just Island Living. Plus it was released in the pre-ep update for everyone, not just for those of us who bought Island Living. That is crazy! Did you take a look in the Bug Report section? There might be a workaround for it or you could at least hit the 'me too' button if it is a bug. Yeah, that really is a shame when you had exciting plans for how you wanted to use it. I hope you find a solution. :/

Yeah, that sounds odd. It is a lot-trait after all.

@MorriSan Thank you for compiling tips & tricks. I had no idea about the cooler boxes, it means that my little teen who is living alone near the volcano is getting breakfast before school. I will be back here again to learn new little things.

I have an UPDATE. I did a repair game and then checked out the neighborhoods. Off-the-Grid is, indeed, available in the other neighborhoods. My game just needed a nudge, I guess. :open_mouth:

Great compilation! <3 I haven't played with this trait yet, but bookmarking this thread for when I'm ready to challenge myself with it! Thanks for all the tips and for the feedback!

PS. Moving this topic to TS4 General Discussion section - the trait is part of the base game

Has anyone tested if the City Living sale tables work the same as the JA vendor tables? If I ever get the time to play, I'd love to be able to use this!

Another question: What would be the point of paying bills off-the-grid? Are they going to take away your electricity? *thumbs nose at Repo Man*

The 12,000 simoleon "unbreakable" bathtub breaks ALL THE TIME.

I discovered that you can clean countertops on off-the-grid lots. That's the one item you can't upgrade to self-cleaning.
I just want things to match. :'(

Are you suggesting your Sims are 'off-the-grid' and yet receiving bills anyway?

@GalacticGal I was reading the thread and found this:
Trying to play with this lot but I have some questions:

    1. My sim still has bills. I didn't question this at first, but then someone said we're not supposed to have bills with off the grid?
    2. My sim seems unable to put out fires. Is this is a problem specific to off the grid?

I haven't had time to play lately, so I'm getting my fix with a few minutes here or there in the forums! Do off-the-grid Sims get bills or not?
