Here are some impressions of my creations hithereto (all no custom content). The forum doesn't let me post pictures or links yet, so I had to break up the code (get rid of the . behind the h in https). Better than flooding the forum with 1 liners, I guess.

@Wenzel Great work! Everything looks fantastic. I'm going to check you out in the gallery. Art Deco Cafe is so nice
@rosemow Thanks for posting the pictures :)

edit - couldn't see you in the Gallery. Have you uploaded / shared anything so far?

@Oblongman My origin-name is JacquesDeLalaing. You can find the following builds in my gallery:

    art deco restaurant
    art deco spa
    baroque chateau
    baroque garden palais
and some older ones that I have not posted here: fluted library, japanese house (unfurnished), chinese house (unfurnished)

The other builds still need some work and playtesting. Interior design is not my strength and I usually exhaust my creative power on the exterior hull of buildings. This is why most of my builds remain half-furnished or unfurnished. Needless to say that this does not increase their download-appeal ( :) ).

Generally speaking, I'm interested in building things that are not overabundantly available already (modern/bauhaus type lots, finca and georgian inspired traditional houses). Since most historical styles do not go too well with residential lots, I usually concentrate on public or business lot-types. Jugendstil/Seccession/Art Nouveau/Arts and Crafts and Art Deco stuff works pretty well with the tools available in build-mode. But I'd wish we had some more interesting mosaic-pattern-tiles and spiral staircases. Baroque styles work for the exteriors, but authentic interior design is very tricky and requires lots of work-arounds. The main reason is the lack of vaults and the lack of stucco work - I tried to imitate stucco via white, paneled wooden facing, but the results are not really that convincing as you can see above.

As for the design of facades, lots and lots of columns/pilasters are the way to go for me. The ornamental intervalls/grid (1m?) are too great, so you need to break up the facade with columns. I wished we had a larger choice for facade-ornaments. Not just columns, but some kind of panels and stucco and small architraves to put above windows (this would be required for some classicistical designs/historical european urban buildings). If you go for historical designs, you'll find that you need to go for a certain level of "sculpture" in walls - flat "wallpapers" don't do the job.

My latest baby is a house that started as an "Arts and Crafts" inspired house. What it is now I can't tell. But I kind of like it. It is supposed to mix very traditional design with more modern aspects (lots of glass). Mix in a lot of geometric ornaments on the exterior et voila!

It consists of the "main house" (which features a hall that streches over both floors) and a working shack (toilet, work bench). In between, there is a little patio from which a stair connects the two floors of the main house.

I'm looking forward to adding a pavillion (shop/greenhouse?) in the garden and in general designing the garden.

Your new home is very nice! :) Very nice exterior design of the buildings and layout of the build! The texture of the exterior walls looks great and gives a nice feel to ren build. The greenery is a nice touch on the exterior walls. It looks very nice how the windows are placed in the build. Very nice layout of the interior of the home! The windows alcove dining nook is very nice! Sims will enjoy sitting at the table eating a meal with sunshine coming in onto them through the windows. The sunflowers look sunny there, for sims to enjoy seeing when dining. Very nice master bedroom. Sims will enjoy waking up the sunshine coming in onto the bed through the bedroom window. The wall paneling looks nice. Very nice windows study desk nook for sims to enjoy looking out through the windows at the outdoors views whilst sitting there using the computer,or reading a book. The books decor are a nice touch on the desk top.
Your plan to add a greenhouse sounds very nice :)

I've added the garden and a small pavillion/greenhouse to the arts & crafts house which is thereby finished. It's already uploaded in the community if you're interested (JacquesDeLalaing / Arts and Crafts house (II) ). Pictures of the garden:

Given that this is my first real try at "garden design", I'm pretty happy. I haven't figured out how some people achieve a more three dimensional look by adding sharper dark green edges to lawn-areas, so that it looks as if there was some shadow. For some reason, I can't achieve those sharp contrast edges.

The garden areas look very nice! :) It looks great how you have used the terrain paint ! The fenced flower areas look very nice! It is nice that there is a woodwork table and easel inside the greenhouse for sims to enjoy doing woodcrafting and painting there. Sims will enjoy sitting resting on the seatbench under the shade of the tree.
The outdoors looks very nice! :)

Thank you for your kind words, rosemow. Even though building is per se a very relaxing and fulfilling thing to do, getting feedback helps to keep motivation high.

    @rosemow & all
Since I'm not nearly as much playing as I am building, I wanted to ask what the requirements for a "usefull" lot are from a gamer's perspective? How can I make my creations more suitable for gamers? I think that "pretty" builds are not always very suitable for gaming? So I wanted to ask what are the essential rooms, essential furniture? Any other preferences (fewer columns as they obstruct vision? As few stairs/floors as possible?)?

Other than that, are there any types of lot that you feel are missing in the public gallery? Is there a distinct lack of choice for some building type/lot size?
  • rosemowrosemow Posts: 163,593 Member
    Hello
Different simmers play the game in different ways and with a variety of types of Sims. Some simmers like some styles of homes more than others. There will always be simmers that are looking for a build, and when they see a build find that it suits their sims household and life./career .
The main thing that simmers appreciate when downloading builds is that they have been playtested beforehand. It is always good to download your bulld from your library yourself again, before uploading to the community section of the gallery, and place it on another new lot and testing to see if there are issues thar iccur,

My replacement for San Myshuno Central Park. Now that terraforming is in the game, I think that creating parks can be quite interesting. Parks are still quite rare in the gallery.

This park is my first experiment with gentle terraforming. It also features a pond and a bridge. It looks a bit like a golf course, but overall I like it. As I've built it so it requires a minimum of DLCs, it is quite bare bones (lack of interaction-objects) right now and should be "outfitted" by the players as they see fit. There are three flat areas that can be fleshed out by the players.

Find it in the gallery ("Splashing Elephant Park"). Also check out my other additions I have not posted here. Especially my Villa Rustica - a heavily historically inspired tuscan villa with a baroque garden, fully playable. And the charming tiny Ni Hao chinese restaurant!

Splashing Elephant Park is a lovely park for SanMyshuno! :) The terrain work looks very great! The plants, trees and flowers look very nice through the build. Very lovely flower bed with the flowers in a circle bordering the bed.
It looks a very restful and peaceful park :)
