Can't Play the Play

Just started playing again, and I'm really enjoying it.
However, I ran into a bit of a problem, and I'm hoping you can help. My Bard tried to stage a play. When he tried to hire his barmaid as actress, I found that he didn't have enough money. So, no play.
Problem is, now he can't stage any play. The option is grayed out. I've restarted the game (though not the Quest), and had him write another play, but no luck.
It might not interfere with his Quest, but I love watching Sims on stage.
Any ideas?

In fact, I'd sell all his plays, just in case, make sure he has enough Simoles, and try again. Best of luck! Thiobalt Gallant, Bard of Kingland, is cheering for you!
